  • Wesak, also known as Buddha Day, is a holiday traditionally observed by Buddhists in Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Bangladesh and South East Asian countries which include Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.
It is the most important Buddhist festival. The festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment (Nibbāna), and passing (Parinirvāna) of the religion's founder, Siddhartha Gautama Buddha. The name Wesak is derived from the Pali term vesākha or Sanskrit vaiśākha for the lunar month of Vaisakha, which is considered the month of Buddha's birth.
Wesak Day is commemorated by lighting joss sticks, incense and candles fashioned as lotus flowers, offering flowers and ceremonially bathing the Buddha statue.
Buddhists in Malaysia on May 22, 2024 observe Wesak Day, with the Maha Vihara Buddhist Temple in Brickfields serving as a central hub for celebrations in the federal capital.
At the Maha Vihara Buddha Temple, approximately 20 decorated car floats participate in a grand 12-kilometre procession through Little India, Pasar Seni, Jalan Raja Chulan, and Bukit Bintang today.
