My family asked for a dice tower for Cristmas. I just found and saved your video after passing on a lot of others. Great process of trial, error, rework, and the inal product looks awesome!
Yes you are so right! Sometimes it seems crazy loud when the dice hit the tray. Like hurt my ears loud. I'm considering making another dice tower and I was thinking I could cut up a mouse pad to go in the bottom of the tray. Maybe green felt is the way to go! Excellent idea. Hey, this would be a good Christmas gift for the families on your list. I bet that most families don't have on they's probably use it, especially if they play games like Yahtzee. Sean, I don't make as many mistakes as you. (I make more.) I think that most of the weekend woodworkers out there felt your pain as you shared them. You're more of a perfectionist than I. I would have just gone with the pin nails. Maybe, I would have given that one to my mother-in-law or another person who did not make my most popular list. Thanks for the video. Thanks! Yes this would make a great Christmas gift. We use it for Yahtzee all the time. We don't play D&D but I know dice towers are very popular in those circles as well. I'm guessing that's where they originated. This tower is surprisingly loud when in use. I added a piece of leather in the bottom of the tray and on the ramp and that made it much better. There are a few other things I would change on this design so a rebuild and lessons-learned video are on the long term list. I appreciate the compliments and for thanks watching!
Looks great. You mentioned the loudness in other comments. Other than felting, I'm wondering if the longer angled shelves that a lot of dice towers have would slow the dice more so there is less energy to generate noise when the dice hit the base. Felting or your mouse mat idea is obviously an easier solution to implement on an already built tower.

Wouldn’t wood putty have worked to cover up the nails?
I've never used it and I was trying to get this project finished quickly. Have you had any luck with wood putty?
