Welcome back John! Gotta Love the top water Snook bite!
Thanks John. I want to walk into a bait shop and see they are selling poles with my name on it. Tight lines!
We're stuck up here fishing, or just cleaning gear and replacing hooks, on good old Long Island.
At least someone isn't freezing his butt off fishing 😂 Great video as always John thanks for sharing.
For real my guy ran away on us
That first one that broke the line was probably a big Jack.
Would love to see you hit some with the fly rod again. 😊
No. Not a chance. I wish it was.
Interesting and informative. Can't get to FL before first week of January.
Its not you John - its the fish
Welcome back. I’ve always had the same results with older trebles. They just seem to come undone after a season or two of a lot of fish.
The hooks were new on everything except the gold plug, and those were real sharp. Just one of those days.
@ I’m going out and buying new rings and hooks. Thanks
This proves that fish hit plugs in the winter!
Lucky bastard
ENJOY Florida
Thanks for all the commentary and educational content as always! I had a couple days like that on the Allegheny this fall, smallies and musky just kept working their way off the hook. When would you say the snook start working their way out of the mangroves and transition into their full winter habitats? I’ve been coming down that way to Tampa in February and march the last few years, but am able to come down in early December and January this year.
They're in winter mode right now.
Good video! I said no way I will own a kayak but the way yours is rigged out, may be next year I will! Just bought "fishing from the edge" Great read!
I'm glad you enjoyed reading Fishing the Edge!
You picking olives there in the brush?
What color would you recommend for the DMV region? Specifically Ocean City, MD?
That silver blue one. I think it's mullet color.
@ thank you for the feedback. I would love to see you fish in or around Ocean city one day.
You make it look easy and I love it. Quick question and I always appreciate your response. I was watching someone using topwater plugs unuccessfully (while others were catching) and then he switched it to a different brand but slightly different shape (I believe a spook plug style) and then he started catching fish. Are striped bass picky like that even on topwater?
Stripers are at least as picky as snook.
Big fish, esp snook, are masters of escape. I get into ruts where they seem impossible to land. Frustrating but keeps me coming back.
I had it coming. I knew I landed too many the last few seasons without dropping more than one or two.
They got big for a reason
Hey John awesome video for decades buddy silly question purchased same reel your using in vid should I not be using this for surf stripers only asking because after 2nd trip I noticed handle seems to be bent slightly on reel didn’t land anything over 35lbs seems to still work find what’s your input thanks buddy
I've landed several big tarpon (60-100#), and battled bigger on the Evict 2000. No issues with the reel. I would not use this real in heavy surf where it's frequently washed over by salty sandy water. That's what I use the SaltX for.
Awesome thanks for the info John
John just got back to LONG ISLAND for the holiday from Fort Myers..head back Jan 2…was thinking maybe getting a baitcaster combo to help casting under the mangroves ?? What do you think..fishing out of my Hobie …dam cold here ..lol
I never cast with baitcasters, so can't help you there. 46 degrees this morning, but 71 late in the day.
Hello John just curious I’m new to this snow bird thing . I’m fishing with a nonresident Florida shoreline license and I’m not sure if I would have to get a different fishing license to fish out of a kayak. Definitely liking the better weather.
You need a non-resident fishing license to fish the kayak. I own my place in Florida but Long Island is my primary residence so I have to buy non-resident fishing licenses.
Welcome back. Bring Peconic scallops?
I hear it's another bad year for them. That's about 5 in a row now.
@ Yikes. Miss my trips to Southhold for those sweet scallops
Belly in the line 100% the reason, that wind was working against you allowing the fish just enough loss of tension to shake off.
Man, you wasted NO Time John! It feels like you were in NY yesterday. Great video. I was down there for the last 8 days for the holiday. Im in Naples and it never got above 63 degrees! The snookies missed you! You need to do a catch, clean and snook if you can land a slot fish. I understand they are very tasty on the half shell. Is the Kayak the same one you keep on LI or do you have a second one down there? Great action!
Season just closed on the 1st, unfortunately.
As an aside, on the half shell will result in a bubbly inedible mess, hence their formerly known namesake “soapfish”
Properly bled and filleted/skinned they make truly superb table fare 🤌🏻
I transport that kayak back and forth. I also have an Old Town ePDL that stays in Florida.
How did you make out in Florida with those hurricanes?
Missed flooding by about 21 inches. There was 18 inches less surge than Ian. No wind damage, so all good.
Ngl I feel like bigger plugs he would’ve got em
Something in the water broke that line
copy of the Jumping minnow … how's this a new lure?
It's balanced differently and handles a chop better. It's thru-wired. It's slightly heavier, which might be why the balance is different. I have a small collection of prototypes that are all a little different and this configuration performed best for me. Certainly a better selection of colors, especially gold, which is a favored color in the Florida backwaters. The rattle is significantly different.
Red rods......that is not descript
It's one of the dark matter skinner rods. Inshore rod .
I realized that after. As Josh said, Dark Matter Skinner Inshore.
