Sealing a Brook Trout in Epoxy - Fly Fishing Net Build

  • A fly fishing landing net should be as unique as it's owner, and this one matches its future forever home perfectly. This handcrafted wooden net was brainstormed via Instagram messenger for a wonderful couple in beautiful British Columbia, and it blends all their favorite things: solid oak hardwood (natural finish for her, dark stained oak for him), and a deep love for eastern brook trout.
I've never seen an all natural finish on a net before, so I was excited to give it a shot on this build. The white vinegar+steel wool mixture reacts to the lignin in the oak to create a beautiful black after several coats (4 total soakings with a wet rag). The result is beautiful and something I'll certainly use again!
Other ingredients for this build are:
    - ‪@Titebond‬ 3 wood glue
    - Lots of smaller ‪@harborfreight‬ 6" and 12" F-style clamps
    - Brass swiveling insert for lanyard
    - ‪@TotalBoat‬deep pour epoxy (3 separate pours for this to get it as bubble-free as possible)
    - Basswood for the brook trout carving
    - ‪@iwatamedea1‬airbrush setup for painting
    - ‪@GoldenPaints‬for the beautiful colors of the brook trout
    - Silicone rubber 120cm catch & release net from Amazon
    - A shop full of the best machinery around from ‪@grizzlymachines‬

Doing well and it’s been a great New Year so far. Have been working on a few videos that I’ll be posting shortly, so the time between video posts was well worth it! Thanks for watching!

Love your work and videos. Would to see a fly inside the handle. I like the boat net's something about the longer handle.

Great suggestion! I have thought of adding a fly into knotholes in some of the more crazy looking pieces I have in my shop. Stay tuned for something like that in the future for sure!

Great video! One quick question, used my net for over 1 year, always drifting on the water, seems the surface sealing paint begins to peel off, anything I can do to restore the water proof surface paint to prevent the handle and net portion from cracking? Thanks a lot!

I always try to use a wood sealer like Dalys Ship n’ Shore that can penetrate deep into the material to help stabilize and seal the wood from within. It hardens inside pretty quickly and also provides a good top surface for the glossy top coats to connect to. You just want to ensure you sand it smooth after each coat (I usually apply 2-3 coats of the sealer prior to finish). I even use a small paint brush to apply sealer in the holes drilled in the net basket. For a damaged/worm net, I’d start by sanding the spot all all around and apply the sanding sealer/finish steps throughout. If you continue getting paint/finish chipping I’d suggest a full resanding to 320-grit and then follow the finish steps. Best of luck on future net builds too!

Looks awesome! What size hoop went on that?

    • @RiverbendWoodworks
      @RiverbendWoodworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is a 120cm hoop basket. There are quite a few options available on Amazon for catch & release net baskets and on Jans Netcraft website as well.

@Riverbend Woodworks thanks for the reply! Instead of routing along the hoop basket Could I just drill holes and counter sink them to tie the net in?
I found a few net baskets that are 13x18, could I make the hoop 14x19 or should I make it the exact dimensions of the net?
      I'm sorry so many questions!

@@TheOutdoorsman You can certainly do that. The channel itself is there to minimize the potential for the tie-in line getting cut while in the field. If you have some really durable line you should be good. That said, you can also simply use a v-groove file and scribe a line around the hoop to create a groove deep enough to shield the line.

Up next is a carving that I think folks will love--something that might be a bit different. Then it's on to a trophy smallmouth bass carving!
