"A Better Way" to kill Lionfish

  • Lionfish are an invasive species and if their populations are allowed to continue growing unchecked, lionfish have the potential to severely effect the health of our reef, with the possible extinction of several indigenous species.
Given their population explosion and aggressive behavior, lionfish have the potential to become the most disastrous marine invasion in history by drastically reducing the abundance of coral reef fish and leaving behind a devastated ecosystem.
NOAA researchers have determined that lionfish reach sexual maturity within two years and spawn multiple times during each spawning season producing up to 30,000 eggs. They are believed to spend the winter from North Carolina to the Bahamas with juveniles found as far north as Rhode Island during the summer months. The largest species can grow up to 15 inches long, although an average length is about 1 foot. An adult lionfish can weigh up to 2.6 lbs. While many can be seen out in the open, just as many will hide under ledges and in small underwater caves. Divers hunting for lobster are highly at risk of being stung by the lionfish as they hide in the same typical locations as lobster. Their lifespan in the wild is around 15 years.
Our local eels smell the Lionfish in our Zoopkeeper Lionfish containment units and come out to try and eat them. While we don't recommend feeding eels off of a spear, we did it this time to get the persistent eel to stop following us. The video we captured when doing so was very powerful, and we hope that eels will hunt Lionfish on their own, as they currently have no natural predators!

What great choreography! You guys are gladiators, as in, “There’s a moray eel feeding on that female lion fish. I’m gladiator.” 😁

I agree. There should be a cruzade with industrial methods of suction the lion fish by divers with large hoses into net cages and after send them to the shore to be recycled as animal food or manure.

    Brilliant :)
Here at Cayman Islands 1) we can only use only authorized, short spears; 2) we cannot feed anymore lionfish to predators as they never learn to hunt but they do learn to associated divers with food and a couple of bad accidents had happened, involving moray eels.
I still carry a net/plastic bag for the very small specimens.

Sharks won't hunt lionfish. These filthy bastards are well camouflaged and they don't swim in the water column where sharks typically take their free-swimming prey.

Funny that a Moray eel will take a lion fish that been impaled but won't attack them in their natural setting.

    Curious question.
    Why wouldn't you just
    Vacuum the lion fish
Up like the gold miners vacuum gold. Faster &
    Much more productive.
Get 500 fish per day instead of 80 or 100 ?

feeding the moray eal was the best bet. there so slow that one eal if he adds them to his diet can keep the entire reef lion fish free.

Love the community spirit and all, but there needs to be a better way to catch these little SOBs. They are far too prolific for this type of hunting to be effective in eradicating this pest, nor do I believe this is a possibility, as they are too well set into their new eco-system. What we need is a trap that can be deployed in deeper waters than the average diver can reach. If we want to preserve and protect our reefs, we must be far more aggressive in our approach. One way to aid the effort would be to pass international laws prohibiting the sale/ownership if these "exotic" animals. We're seeing the exact same thing transpire on land, as the Boa snake prolifirates in the Southeastern US. We need to get serious about our eco-system and its protection, not just pay lip-service to the idea.
