    I was under the floor of our house a week or so ago running radiator pipes to the workshop and the amount of cement dust under there was my problem. Only 24" height to play in so i was squirming along on my side getting from A to B........I was absolutely covered when i eventually surfaced! Dang those builders!

    One of my pet peeves is lazy builders who leave rubble and other detritus under floorboards!
    This caused a nasty incident at my mum's house. One evening there was an almighty crash from the kitchen when part of the ceiling fell down. A few years earlier she had the bathroom (directly above the kitchen) remodelled, which involved moving the toilet. A new hole was put in the outside wall for the soil pipe. The builders had just left all the rubble from that under the floor. When a cistern pipe later developed a leak it made the ceiling damp and the extra weight of the rubble caused the whole lot to come crashing down. The whole kitchen was covered in dust and took forever to clean up. Wouldn't have happened if they'd not been so lazy.

    • @jaro6985
      @jaro6985 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The leak would have caused damaged regardless, ceiling might have even come down if you didn't notice it for a few days.

      @@jaro6985 My point was that even if the ceiling had come down anyway, it wouldn't have covered the kitchen in crap.

    Wires everywhere and also copper pipe everywhere! I assume some must be for heating. I'd separate the ones on the left that are touching, they must make a noise when they expand!

    No offense but such a cabling for electrical power would get you in serious trouble here in Switzerland 😅

    • @IanScottJohnston
      @IanScottJohnston 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the UK we are allowed to do our own electrical wiring repairs etc., we only need qualified electricians involved if it's new work, i.e. wiring a brand new extension.
      However, even then there are options, i.e. I completely rewired my workshop when it was converted from a garage (classed as 'new') and so I only used the qualified electrician to check, test and sign-off the work.
      I am guessing other countries might not have this same flexibility.

      If this offends your sensibilities, don't look at any Australian wiring!

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ickipoo If you really want to be unhappy look up any sort of informal settlement wiring, where anything goes, and the most common cable is stolen phone line, which often also doubles as lighting, as it is often loaded to the point it glows.

      @@SeanBZA Australian wiring isn't terrible - it was probably ahead of the UK at some point - but it has slipped behind in some important respects.

      @@IanScottJohnston Not strictly true you can do SOME very limited work with no issues, you can also do a complete re-wire if you want but in that case you would have to notify building control and get the work inspected/tested. The difference is a "qualified" electrician under Part P can sign off their own work without needing to get building control involved.

    Great idea with the infrared. I think you should place a time capsule under the bath with a copy of this video but on what medium. With that i have so many other questions as all our services run thru the roof and down the walls.
    1. When you say "when they did the bathroom before you moved in" do you mean when the bathroom was first built many years ago or was it was renovated just before you moved in.
    2. There appears to be an air duct on the left, where does it go, what is it for. Does it also run thru the floor
    3. what will make the new floor, ceramic tiles, wooden floor boards or chip board and lino perhaps. Is sealing it against moisture seeping thru a challenge
    4. is there a risk of piercing pipes when installing the new floor with nails and screws or is there some other trick to laying the new floor
    5. will the underfloor be accessible in the future for future faults and making changes
    6. or are you snookered if you want to make changes in the future such as adding power points as all the wiring is sealed in the flooring.
    It seems that all the brick rubble was also thrown under our bathrooms before that section of concrete pad was poured. Its obviously a thing

      The house is a vicarage from the 60's, it would appear this room wasn't originally a bathroom as there is remnants of some AC sockets under the bath and behind where the shower was. At some point around 2006 the whole house saw quite a bit of work, including this bathroom being fitted and a new kitchen in the room underneath which is where a lot of the bodges were implemented (90% I sorted out before this video).
      The flexible pipe you're seeing is actually the flexible soil pipe from the WC that was on that side. I lifted the floorboards as most were in poor condition from being cut all over the place for various works. The new floor is P5 moisture resistant chipboard, which will then have a waterproofing membrane then T&G vinyl planks. It's not a wetroom though, so doesn't need full waterproofing.
      I've taken photos of the cable runs etc, but also done an accurate map on the chipboard itself so that when it's screwed down I can avoid pipes and wires. It's definitely a risk so always mark these things out. Once the floor is down, that's it, so I'm sorting out all the issues now. It's also wise to pressure test the new pipework before laying the floor! There was all kinds of random wiring, brown junction boxes etc, so all of that is gone now. I've run extra cables from the consumer unit to the airing cupboard nearby for futureproofing, though I don't really see them getting used.

      It's still well within building control allowances since they're oversized 10x2 timbers and supporting wall either side. There's three joists under the bath

    Still amazes me how many "professional" electricians and plumbers don't have thermal cameras, indeed many seem to be actively resistant to them there's several faults I've seen sparks struggle with on their TH-cam channels that a thermal camera would have found MUCH quicker.
