As a Greek, I was only taught at school that the Persians were some bad guys that the Greeks defeated. I am only now starting to learn about their civilization, and I am amazed.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity. And Pete. He's the one that sent me here.

Nobody was a bad guy if you really think about it.
It comes from the perspective you're looking and teached from!

Its normal the stronger part or the invader gets to be the bad guy and in this case Persia was both. So its not neccassary wrong, especially from a Greek perspective. Still a great empire tho, love to hear about the Achaemenids.

Too bad they destroyed Lydian Civilization and Babylonian Civilization, two great inheritors of ancient world and replaced them with a military dictatorship with barely any advancement in technology.

As a Persian from Shiraz, I am glad you made such a great film length documentary which is bursting at the seams with information about my ancestors. I am glad to be born in Iran and have Cyrus the Great as one of my ancestors as he truly was and still is a force of righteousness and light. I hope that in the same way Cyrus united the Persians and the Medes, that modern Iranians will come together and unite to fight injustice and inequality wherever it might be happening. Zendebaad Iran!

There is not even one prophet, who's true words remain to this day, or else they are no prophet, from Adam, to Abraham, to Jmmanuel, and Mohammed. Their words and sayings have all been hidden, corrupted, lost or destroyed. There is only one author, and his words are written upon the hearts of every man, so that when he stands at Judgement he can claim no ignorance of the law, lest he blaspheme the spirit that resides within him, the very same spirit which will give account of his deeds and testify of his works!

Prior to the battle of Cyrus' death, Another smaller battle took place where Cyrus feigned a retreat to allow the Scythians to loot what appeared to be an abandoned camp. Led by Tomyris' son Spargapises, the Scythians looted the camp and drunk the deliberately left wine (something the Scythians were unfamiliar with). The Persians then attacked the intoxicated Scythians. After sobering up, Spargapises commited suicide in captivity, realising the trap he had fallen into.

The more I listen about the Persians from your videos, Cy...The more I begin to like them as a whole and a civilization I could easily live in if I was alive in ancient times due to how things were runned as a whole. They dont seem to be as brutal or as villianized as the Greeks would have you believe...such as their depictions in Assassin's Creed Odyssey or 2006's movie 300. But hey that's just what it seems like. There's probably more to the story of the Persian conquests than what we know about them from historians and the historical records that the Persians and other civilizations left behind. As the saying goes: there's one side, then another side of the story...and then there's the truth.

If you have read history, you know that when the Arabs invaded Iran, the Arabs did not have the letter P, and that is why the people called Pars Fars.
The origin of Farsi language is in the southwest of Iran, but the people of Tajikistan and Afghanistan are the people of the northeast of Iran.
There is no evidence to say that Persians are originally Indians, and if we proceed with this logic, Kurds and Lors are 100% Indians, not Iranians.
Persians are from the southwest of Iran, but Kurds and Lors are from the northwest of Iran, and the people of Shiraz and Pars province of Iran were called Pars, not the people of the Zagros region.
No one has created a fake country for the Fars people
And also, no one is begging for your history, Kurds, and it is a sign of your ignorance that you want to steal other people's history, steal it with lies.
Cyrus the Great's family was from the Persians, not the Medes, only Cyrus was from the Medes on his mother's side, and again Cyrus was from the Persians. Fars did not copy Kurds and Lers, if you read history, you know that Iran is not a fake country and your words are another sign of your ignorance.
Throughout history, the West has always wanted the destruction of Iran and never wanted Iran to return to its former glory. Then create a fake country for the Persian people. Today, the West wants to build a completely fake country for you Kurds.
Then you Kurds call Iran a fake country
You Kurds don't say that we Kurds have been oppressed throughout history and are children of the mountains, so how do you claim history and civilization and say that we have history and arrogantly disrespect other nations? Especially the people of Fars who respect and love you Kurds so much, that is why God will not give you a country.
I'm starting to hate all Kurds because when I see Kurds in cyberspace who hate Fars and Persians so much and try so hard to buy history and identity for themselves and steal the history of Fars people, don't expect me to respect you.
I never thought in my life that I would have to prove to some ignorant Kurds that Fars are Persians

This Cyrus fella, whether the texts are to be believed, seems to be quite a decent and lenient ruler of such a vast and diverse empire. He's what we would call today, a very "tolerant and progressive leader" which is highly unusual for the time and even unusual in today's modern world, he would be viewed very favourably by the masses.

I am not as familiar as I would like to be as it pertains to the history of the east as the west. This was informative and enjoyable.
I like how you consistently cite Herodotus during this period (for obvious reasons), but always show pertinence in taking some of his writings with a grain of salt. I enjoy the Histories (especially as it pertains to Herodotus' bias but also his sense of humor and thorough nature)
Either way: great job, as always, Cy. I always enjoy your videos.

    • @HistorywithCy
      @HistorywithCy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Haha yeah don't get me wrong, as much as knock on Herodotus in other videos, I still love reading Histories and respect him a lot. I personally think that he tried his best when he could, and filled in the blanks with myths and legends which honestly, in those days were often taken as fact anyway. I think that bias is to be expected, since after all, Herodotus was from the Greek Ionian city of Halicarnassus which had a tense relationship with their Persian overlords and also sources, such as those from Egypt or Greek cities, didn't take too kindly to them either. Despite this, I think he did a good job with what he was given. Thanks again for stopping by and your comments, really appreciate them! More to come, stay safe!

GREAT VIDEO! I'm a huge fan of Cyrus the Great!
Korosh Kabir/Kuruš (Cyrus), in MY historical analysis, was one of the greatest strategists and conquerors in military history! He is one of the few who TRULY deserve the epithet of "Great". While Rome, for example, was still only an insignificant city-state in Lazio during the reigns of Servius Tullius and Tarquinius Superbus, Cyrus, on the other hand, had already founded the very first GLOBAL empire in history, unifying the entire Middle East and Asia Minor under his power. Cyrus, therefore, was the driving force that, for the first time in history, unified (at least politically) the ENTIRE Middle East and Asia Minor! With the exception of Egypt (Mūdrâya), which was conquered by Cambyses at Pelusium (Egypt became the satrapy of Mūdrâya), Cyrus defeated and conquered three of the four major empires that controlled the Middle East and Asia Minor during the 6th century BC: Lydia (Sparda), Media (Mâda) and Babylon (Bābil).
Cyrus, therefore, conquered an empire that controlled much of Anatolia (Croesus' Lydia), an empire that controlled all of modern Iran, part of the Caucasus and part of Anatolia (Astyages' Media), and, lastly, an empire that controlled all of Mesopotamia, Phoenicia and parts of Arabia since the days of Nebuchadnezzar (Nabonidus' Neo-Babylonian Empire).
As for Egypt, Pharaoh Psamtik III (526-525 BC), the last pharaoh of the 26th Egyptian dynasty, in my historical analysis, inherited a completely isolated empire within the political context of the Middle East during the 6th century BC. Following Cyrus' conquests in Lydia (546 BC), Media (549 BC) and Babylon (539 BC), which were carried out during the reign of Pharaoh Ahmose II (570-526 BC), Egypt became completely isolated and vulnerable! This channel already made an excellent video about it!
The Persian conquest of Caria, Lydia, and Ionia (which were located within the current Turkish provinces of İzmir, Aydın, Uşak, Muğla and Manisa), in my historical analysis, represented a severe blow against the Ionian Greeks of Asia Minor, more precisely against the 12 city-states of the so-called Ionian League (Κοινή σύνοδος Ίώνων): Miletus (Μίλητος), the "cradle of philosophy" ("Το λίκνο της φιλοσοφίας), as I like to call it, Ephesus (Έφεσος), Myus (Μύος), Teos (Τέως), Klazomenai (Κλαζομεναί), Colophon (Κολοφών), Priene (Πριήνη), Erythrae (Ερυθραί), Phocaea (Φώκαια), Lebedos (Λέβεδος), Samos (Σάμος) and Chios (Χίος).
Moreover, in addition to Lydia itself, Cyrus and Harpagus also conquered Lycia/Pamphylia (the current Turkish provinces of Antalya and Muğla), Cilicia (current Turkish provinces of Adana, Mersin, Osmaniye, Hatay and Manisa), and, of course, Phoenicia itself, which became the main base of the Persian fleet under Darius, especially Tyre, "the mother of Carthage" (as I like to call it).
Furthermore, Cyrus' military actions also conquered the region of Elam (current Iranian provinces of Ilam and Khuzestan). Susa itself became one of the five greatest capitals of the Achaemenid Empire (alongside with Pasargadae, Persepolis, Ecbatana and Babylon). However, in my historical analysis, it was the conquest of Babylon that "wrote" Cyrus' name in history. The conquest of Babylon was of utmost importance!
Note: During the 6th century BC, Babylon was simply the most important city on the face of the world! Conquering Babylon in the 6th century BC, in other words, was like conquering London in the 19th century, Rome in the 2nd century or New York in the modern times! Furthermore, the conquest of Babylon also guaranteed the conquest of Mesopotamia by Cyrus, more precisely Sumer (Šumeri) and the Sumerian city-states of Ur, Uruk, Eridu and Lagash, which included all the current Iraqi governorates of Bābil, Dhi Qar, Wasit, Basra, Al-Muthanna and Al-Qādisīyyah. Following the conquest of Babylon, as the video already mentioned, Cyrus adopted the titles that once belonged to the Assyrian and Babylonian kings, including the titles of "King of Babylon" ("Šar Bābili/Šar māt Bābil"), the "Great King" ("Šarru rabû"), the "mighty king" ("Šarru dannu"), the "king of kings" ("Šar Šarrāni"), "king of Sumer and Akkad" ("Šar māt Šumeri u Akkadi"), "king of the Universe" ("Šarru kiššat māt") and "king of the four corners of the world" ("Šar Kibrāt erbetti").
The Achaemenid Empire was the "firstborn" of all the subsequent global empires, including Alexander's Macedonian Empire and the Roman Empire! Cyrus laid the foundation of the first GLOBAL empire in history! Without Cyrus, Alexander would not have been possible! Moreover, the Achaemenid Empire was one of the few empires based on morality during Antiquity! By influence of Zoroastrianism, slavery was simply abolished! Cyrus himself considered slavery as an affront to Ahura-Mazda! The Human Rights is, par excellence, a Persian/Achaemenid creation!

The Iranian fars tribe isn't persian , and persian isn't farsi
Because originally The roots of the farsi language basic belong to the people of Tajikistan It is a branch of the Dari language of Afghanistan
Undoubtedly iranian fars tribe are descent indian
the nickname of persian belong to old region the called zagros and native people which lorestani and kurds living all round there . so this all history about mesopotamia in fact nothing to do with farsi people which immigrant and come from indian to iran . so some Europe companies the was concerns of ottoman empire that's why the build an fake country for fars tribe and keep genocided assimilated kurdish & lorstan history. racial cleansing , coultur, ancient & civilisation
So the heritage and ancestry family of cyrus origin belong to the med (median ) empire which was the kurds kurdistan and lorestanj so basic farsi language origin belong to Afghanistan , Tajikistan not iran and iranian fars should not proud of an history which nothing to do with them that's not honor they imitated everything from others,
So an century many( fake )sham country's in middle east ( iraq , turkey ,iran , Syria) build by the WEST companies

Additionally, if you permit me, I would like to bring to everyone's attention that the period of Darius and Xerxes, according to some modern scholars, represents the fundamental source of our existing East-West divide, which historically antagonized Middle Eastern cultures against the Western Civilization.

The next one will dive further into this divide with Xerxes' invasion of Greece, the policies of later Achaemenid kings toward Europe and finally the greatest east-west encounters of all time (at least in my opinion), Darius III vs. Alexander of Macedon...stay tuned. Thanks again for stopping by, really appreciate it...stay safe!

@@HistorywithCy - Thanks for your reply, dear "History" friend (by the way, may I inquire about your name?). Back to the topic. Isn't history amazing? This terrible East-West divide, which is so important now, has been boiling (and getting worse) for 2,500. Indeed after the Achaemenid/Persian incursions, then came Alexander's destruction of Persepolis, followed by incursions of Romans advances in the Levant, then the Islamic centuries long occupation of the Iberian peninsula, three centuries of atrocities caused by the European Crusaders in the Levant, Byzantine conflict with the Ottomans (and the later subsequent occupation of Greece, Bulgaria and other realms in the Balkans), and then centuries of European Colonialism in the Middle East, not to mention the British establishment of Israel (along with Zionism and their oppression of the Palestinians), and finally extremist Islamic Terrorism (which is also connected with the rise of the Islamic fundamentalist government in Iran, Taliban and ISIS now) … It's mindboggling, as well as shocking, particularly the great majority of people on Earth are not even aware of this HUGE Historical, complex, and exponentially dangerous issue! Cheers.

It made me think - all the historian contrarians , how many times they have been proven wrong. They said Troy was a made up place, until it was proven; that Minoans were a fable - until the Minoan palace was found; and there is more. More recently they said there was not an ancient city in Brazil it was tale - until some one found it in the jungle.
So i find it nice that you present the history and then the contrary view and let us make up our own mind.

Even today with the whole might of the Anglo-American empire the entirety of this territory is not under the rule of one imperium, showing the immense difficulties in doing so. I get totally amazed how these people managed to rule such culturally and geographically diverse territory, which is also extremely rich and well positioned. 2.500 years ago. Wow.
That comes to show how the ancients were way more developed than we may think. The intelligence, postal and bureaucratic networks required to rule this vast empire cannot be understated.

When was the first mesopotamian or Elamite mention of specifically the Persians? Most videos on early origins start with the Medes in Assyrian records like you do then go to Cyrus after the fall of the Assyrians. According to Wikipedia they'd have been in Fars since 1000 BC. What were they called in Elamite and did the Assyrians mention them separately from the Medes?

@@erimgard3128 Is there an Assyrian word for them?

    • @HistorywithCy
      @HistorywithCy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi! Yeah that's a very good question that is still debated. In Assyrian texts from the 800s BC there is reference to lands/peoples called Parsumash and Parsua. There is also an inscription of Ashurbanipal of Assyria that mentions a king Cyrus (in Akkadian called Kurash) of Parsua that sent his son to Nineveh as a "guest," though in reality a type of hostage. Some scholars contend that these are the earliest, non-Greek references to Persian tribes, though other contend that they may have been other Iranian groups and not specifically the Persians. As for Persians in Elamite sources, I haven't read any but in all honesty, Elamite records from that time period are quite scarce. I haven't read the Wikipedia page so I can't comment specifically on that, but the date 1000 BC probably comes from what scholars believe would have been migration patterns for nomadic groups coming from the north. Unfortunately, since nomads leave behind few material remains, this is hard to prove. Hope this helps and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks again and stay safe!

@@erimgard3128 Yes, perhaps. I think also Shalmaneser III mentions Parsua which some of linked to the Persians. I'll have check the inscription to confirm, but I have it somewhere.
