    Brian Moore was such an affable bloke, and a brilliant presenter and commentator. Hilarious hearing him get over-excited in the early days!

    The 77-78 season was my favorite. My favorite Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool sides. English football was awesome back then, for that whole season. Then it just went downhill. Those teams lost their sense of pride.

    I use to hate going to Church on Sundays because of the big match. 🤣

    Brian Moore, I favoured The Big Match as a young fan. Sunday afternoons , watching the highlights, without all this analysis. Also as a Gooner Brian provided the sentence that still to this day, gives me goosebumps. “Thomas, it’s up for grabs now…Thomas. Anfield May 1989, George Graham’s Arsenal ⚽️👍🏼❤️

    Brian Moore, good guy and lifelong Gillingham fan and director. Prone to saying a pet phrase over and over - "He's Done it"

    Bear in mind that Barnet wasn't on the Football League at that moment, and no footage from them appeared on LWT.

    So far, the only surviving footage of the original Brian Moore commentary of the 1970 FA Cup Final Replay. The bulk of this match was wiped and Moore had to re-record it for DVD release. And it shows the lack of passion.

    Does anyone know this one video that is a compilation of a bunch of dumb/funny british football interviews and moments from the 70s/80s? There's two episodes of it on youtube. I saw it a few months ago but now cant seem to find it.

    Derek Hales scoring the Big Match's Goal of the season in the 76-77 season for Charlton against Hull. Charlton's greatest ever goalscorer for sure, as well as playing for Luton, Derby and West Ham to name but a few. Doesnt take a genius to suggest that I'm a Charlton fan haha

    although tv brought football into people's homes more than radio could ever do, i think it also slowly killed real football, the one we see in these images. i'm only 27, but even not having witnessed those years myself, i still can understand that today's game is something else, something different from what it was back then, something dirtier, more pragmatic. now what do we have? betting scandals, crooked refs and obsessive sports "journalists" who stick their nose in players' and clubs' private lives. this is not football anymore.

    • @scherben8870
      @scherben8870 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Betting scandals? Does the name Tony Kay mean anything? Apparently, bribery and corruption were rife. Harry Gregg has claimed that un-named United players were involved in match rigging in the 60s. Liverpool's Tommy Smith claims Emlyn Hughes had tried to fix the 1972 title decider at Highbury (I'll not mention the Gary Sprake allegations pertaining to the same night).
      Crooked refs? Ask 1973 Derby County at Juve; 1973 Leeds in the Cup Winners Cup Final; 1975 Leeds in the European Cup Final; 1984 Nottingham Forest in the UEFA Cup Semi-Final.
      Obsessive journalists? The Tommy Docherty scandal? The Tony Kay scandal (again)? George Best being hounded and hounded? The media circus round the Bobby Moore bracelet nonsense?
      The only thing I'd say was better then was the atmosphere wasn't gimmicky and contrived.
      Nothing changes; there is no golden era. Just a 'now' that morphs into a 'then' in time.

      Preferred th way th game was bak then n no disrespect cos even 2day they gotta train etc but thy also luk lik a bunch of teenagers, that's my honest opinion n u had more characters in th game in th past 2 but u cud say tht abt snooker 2 now,n oth stuff, wiv ths break over th covid 19 coronvirus thing I dnt mis it if it don't return in all of 2020,n dnt know how far these postponm
      nts r gonna go but I ope n pray it stops worldwide 4 long enuff mainly 4 th safety n 2 stop th spread of ths illness but after tht I ope wen footie restarts it goes bak 2 wot it was in th 70s n 80s,wiv les diving n cheatin cmplainin 2 ref n muddy pitches etc,am getin it abt hi quality n standards n tht but it's almost 2 smooth now n I feel wiv stuff lik var it's a step 2 far,but wot r th chances of it going bak 2 as it is in ths tv program
      prob slim n nil,here's hoping.
