I always close the gas shutoff and let the generator run until it runs out of gas before putting it away.
But remember... there is still some fuel that’s left in the bowl.... it is not dry.

Spent years fixing motors, mostly motor cycles and small machine engines. Don't know how many carburetors I stripped and cleaned. Now been retired quite a few years but really enjoy watching someone doing what I used to do, or in some cases, should have done ,!.

i picked up 2 5500 watt powermates made in 2003 for $100 for both, after a carb clean, oil change, typical maintenance things they are both up and runnin, however like yours, both are extremely cold natured and hate inline filters for gas. Sold them for $300 each. Good stuff. Love your contrnt, keep up the great work sir.
I have to say this was another very educational video for me when you took the carb off the engine body I was thinking diaphragm nope just a simple carb and float system this actually looked simple and easy to fix the governor spring was a no brainier easy fix. The tires good on you to get those on safely low pressure but still things can go wrong when working with pressures. I think that you are doing a great educational service to all of us. All the old Tecumseh engines I fooled with had a special detent on the choke for half choke where it had to stay to warm up. I also added a 'T' in the fuel line between the tank and fuel pump on my old 5K with an I/C Briggs 'L' head and a valve with a long-ish hose so I can drain the tank dry and not have to play around with it. And I just use gun grease to bead the tires up and ethanol will kill those tank bushings but they're not hard to come by. Good video!

Tubeless tires are always a hassle when they come off the rim.
I always have trouble with plastic carbs, never had your luck with them. Nice job getting it to work.

When they come off the rim you can wrap a ratchet strap around the circumference and crank it down so the bead will try to seat. Just like it was done in the video. I did it several times with my atv

You gave me some good ideas on my old generator. It's a Tecumseh, but an older model. The bowl is metal and you kill the motor with a piece of metal mounted on a head bolt. It's bent and you just touch the spark plug to ground it. I'm sure you've seen those!

Thank you for this video. I’ve had this generator for years after my father gave it to me and it’s never ran very well. Using this video I was able get it running very smoothly. Only problem I had was one of the carburetor studs broke as I was attempting to remove it!

When trying to seat the tires remove the valve core and use the quick disconnect only of the air line on the valve stem to seat the bead. By doing this the air volume going into the tire will be at a greater rate, on small tires only a second of air is needed and no longer because the air is unregulated. Install the core and inflate as you would do normally. When cutting hoses I like using AES Industries Mighty Cutter Hose Cutting Tool, makes for a cleaner cut and the blade can be replaced. When removing grommets cut the top of the grommet and push the bottom into the tank, yes you have to go fishing for it but it's easier than trying to pull the whole grommet though the hole.

It does not always work. Sometimes the fuel line has to snake around a corner and the drill bit will not allow it.

James, get a can of silicone spray and hit rubber parts with that. Makes removing them so much easier. Also I use silicone grease to install anything rubber, like on motorcycles pushing multi carb racks into rubber carb holders it’ll just slide in. Same for bushings and fittings.
Yes good advice. I used to build up motorcycles straight out of the crate. Did that one plus always put copper grease on exhaust studs etc. and most things that would need to be removed during servicing over the next few years, wheel nuts, axles etc. High melting point silicone lubricant on disc caliper mounting studs. Amazing just how much time I saved later in if I was doing a service on one of those bikes. Much quicker than removing a broken steel stud from an aluminum cylinder block. !.

Great catch on the governor spring. I thought that immediately after the first start. I've tried simple green but keep going back to carb cleaner. I just feel like it cuts the varnish better, especially in small passages. I've had carbs that don't work right after simple green cleaning. Redoing them with carb cleaner and then they worked.

The "official" Tecumseh tool for removing and replacing carburetor needle seats is the 670377. About $15 on eBay.
If you don't have an E5 Torx, I have found that a 5/32" socket fits well. (Yes, both are scarce.)
Tecumseh engines always seem to mount the gas tank (or the feed from the gas tank) on the opposite side from the carburetor. Then they feed the fuel line behind the flywheel and fan shroud. Good tip on feeding that hose back ! If you are using "standard" neoprene 1/4" ID fuel hose you will find it has a slightly larger OD that what Tecumseh uses. 1/2" vs 15/32". Using the standard 1/2" OD hose will make it more difficult to snake back behind the flywheel and the spring clamp that came off may not work.

Hi, can you make a video explaining the best way to store generators in a correct way?
It would be a pretty short video. But to sum it up, always store the carburetor dry. If you keep gas in the tank, swap it out once or twice a year with fresh stuff. Store it inside, keep the battery charged with a battery tender. I also pull the engine over until I hit the compression stroke. That way the valves are closed and you minimize any water or moisture getting in causing rust on the valves and rings.

@@trooper11c the easiest way is to pull the engine over slowly until you feel the compression (engine stops turning). Then remove the spark plug and carefully insert a screwdriver until it touches the top of the piston. Pull the rope slowly until the piston is at the top. NOTE: the piston is at the top twice, once at the end of the compression stroke and the other time at the end of the exhaust stroke. It adjusting the valves you want to be at top dead center of the compression stroke or just a bit past.

for a while i would have 3 or 4 at a time that i fixed, most needed very little. i liked having spare backups because at the time i had little money so i couldnt just go buy a new one. things have since changed and i have sold them.

Great tip. I use silicone oil for assembly on all rubber parts and have started using it on gaskets, especially paper ones. Motor oil tends to deteriorate rubber parts. Gaskets seem to seal better and don't dry out as fast and are easier to get apart later.. I appreciated the tip about running the piston up on the compression stroke before storing, to close the valves Thanks.

To provide some lubrication on a new rubber bushing for the fuel tank, try 'Fuel Lube', also known as 'EZ Turn Lubricant' from Aircraft Spruce @ $21.95 for a 5oz tube. This is a wax based lube, designed for lubricating/sealing fuel line fittings on aircraft. That one tube will last you the rest of your life!

Thank you posting I got a 11hp 200amp brushless welder. Same set up as yours No AVR it has a 250v power GPO on it to power up power tools and the like. This was to hook up generators and the like But it now burning out any power tool with a brushers It burnt out one of my drills I notice that before it did there was a blue glow coming from the drills brushers I don't know what cause that would you know

When draining the oil, I would remove the fill cap; found the oil drains faster and more complete. Seems as though there's a "suction effect" if the oil filler cap is left on.
YES, chuck. oil out=air in.....maybe even put an air compressor in fill hole.....push it out with all sludge...

I'm in the middle of assembling a Powermate 2250W genset and I cant find the torque value to bolt the rotor onto the tapered shaft. It's a 5/16-24 bolt. I checked the Fastenal site and it says torque is 14 ft/lbs. Other informarion gives torque values closer to 30 ft/lbs. What value do you recommend torquing the bolt?

i have this same generator that was given to me. the first thing was the flywheel was frozen to the mag so i had to brake that loose. then the carb was a totally gummed up so cleaned it now i have a great working gen that cost me nothing

Your starting fluid is the easiest way to seat the bead on a tire that’s stubborn. Works better than any ratchet strap. Been doing it for years and always gets the Adrenaline going too. Give it it a try

Tecumpseh engines are typically cold natured and require the choke to be left on a bit longer than other engines.

Neighbor threw 2 generators out on trash days i grabbed both the one was drained looked amazing no work then i had one basically identical to this that need gas drained majorly and a spark plug i took carb apart to clean and ordered a stens gasket runs decently still needs a oil change.

I do not understand the design of the gas line and how it runs through the engine, right behind the fly wheel. There's nothing guarding it from the heat of the engine, and if if swells for any reason, it would be touching the flywheel. Would there be any issues with it running correctly, if the gas line were re-routed?
Shouldn't you put the gas shutoff valve between the filter and the tank? That way to change the filter you can just turn off the valve.
