Thanks for sharing MOOSE with the rest of the world. Understandable why you couldn't leave the following morning without saying "Goodbye, AGAIN" to Moose. I'll bet he misses YOU TWO...and YOU TOO.
+Romeo Whiskey Nice one RW - speaking with other sailors here Moose is treasured by sailors from all over the world. I am told he even has his own Facebook page but I could not find it - so not sure about that --- still --- he is certainly a dog that could have a FB page :)
+Catamaran Impi Glad that you were able to find MOOSE...and your "MOOSE HUNT" was successful. LOL Retitle this episode? "MOOSE HUNT in New Caledonia?" LOL What a great surviving dog. We should all have his traits.
Romeo Whiskey Good one - only discovered his name munch later though - he must get quite confused - other sailors told us they were calling him 'Mitch' - LOL!
I cried when you left Moose. How sad. I would love to take him. Like you said, isn't he already home. Lonely, he must be. for being a wild dog, he sure is friendly. He's in such great shape. What a beautiful animal. Wish I could take him some toys and food.
+Tom Stanley - Yes Tom - we have similar feelings for Moose ... he does enjoy the visits from sailors and we really dont know what the correct thing would be to do for him
I would love to go and live on that Island with Moose. Its sad that he was left there all alone but he seems happy and is doing well...Good luck Moose, you are adorable..I enjoy your videos very much, thanks to you both for sharing your lives with all of us, cheers ...
Awesome comment and thanks for sharing. We should publish our current visit video - the authorities promised that Moose will get the necessary care ... and always our pleasure to share with you ... cheers for now
What a marvelous adventure and amazing story about the dog. Bless his heart....darn near brought tears to my eyes. I fell in love with him. I can't imagine the emotions upon leaving. Dogs were sent by God to us how to love! I would have been so tempted to take him with me but I agree with you, I think he's perfectly happy on his own little island. This was one of the best video's I've seen. Thank you for sharing those tender moments with "Dutchy"....... God Speed and fair winds, Johnny PS: I lied.....I did cry :-(
+Johnny Wilson LOL - I loved the ending to your comment - obviously comfortable enough within yourself to admit it jerked a tear :) - yes - must say, after loosing a dog at a young age and all the emotions that went along with that, I kinda distanced my heart from having one get 'close enough to me again'. But must say in this instance, Moose broke down all the walls and it was a very sad moment to leave - I almost felt guilty - can't explain that but its how we felt in our hearts! Cheers
That's right Moose, not Dutchy.....don't know where that came from. Guess I destroyed too many brain cells back in the 60's and 70's...lol Take care you two and God Speed...
What an awesome tour guide on Casy Island! That must have been really tough on you guys to leave Moose, but he really enjoys his very own island! That was just an amazing adventure! Thanks guys!
What a great story thank you for sharing as well as all your adventures.I did wonder about drinking water for Moose just before you mentioned the subject near the end of the vid lol, Shalom Impi and Moose!
+Don Grace Don - I smiled when I read your message because I wondered if I had not made too long a story of our visit here - but then I see you actually watched till the end :) I must try keep it shorter going forward - was trying to cram 2 visits into 1 movie because internet is sometimes difficult to come by. It does rain on the island - and yes, sailors have placed funnels and water pipes into catchment trays for him - If one looks carefully at the back of the sign board toward the end of the dock I think there is a contraption there as well. I think as sailors, we also get to miss our pets so it being at sea for 4 years now without a dog - this one had me feeling all those emotions again ... you know how they say 'a dog is mans best friend' .... cheers and thanks for the comment :)
+Patrick Hogan Thanks Patric - a dog so healthy surviving on an island is amazing ... we are still so 'touched' by the guy! As for going viral - hmmm - not sure my videos are good enough for that, but it is nice to be sharing this with folks and we so love that in some small way we can bring these experiences to people who find joy in it !
Wow, incredible video. I'm not gonna lie.. I was chopping onions here for poor old Moose. When he waited on the pier with the coconut... oh man.. my heart. Thank you very much for the great entertainment and for the education you share. I've learnt a lot from you already. Best wishes to you both and smooth sailing.
+Lions Fan - Awesome comment - I love that saying 'chopping onions for Moose' - Must remember that one! Always our pleasure to share what we can. We are thinking of heading back to New Caledonia and if we do we will certainly visit Moose and do an update on things there. We have spoken to some caring folks who lice there to ask them to look into the situation. Cheers for now :)
+alberciik Our pleasure - must say we LOVE New Caledonia and will PROBABLY head back that way after New Zealand and in the new season ... cheers for now
I just the long comment on Mooses state. It's awesome that so many people now care for him. He is probably far much happier where he is, than if someone would grab him and take him home. He has been there for such a long time it is his home. And he didn't look underweight or anything. He looked healthy and happy.
Woohoo!!! There should be a cabinet there that you can store cans of food so those visiting that don't have food can take one. I wish I could bring my dog Jackson there to visit with him.
+Ben Coles - Thanks Ben - yes truly - New Caledonia one of our favourite destinations so far - but to be fair, the weather has been incredible and that usually makes for great visits! I remember cruising through the Bahamas on Impi - there were places that dazzled and amazed and others that just did not. Since we cruised up and down there we would come back to some places we previously had not liked and ended up loving it! The reason was clear for us - WEATHER! So, weather certainly plays a big role in how much one appreciates and 'rates' a destination. You already know this I am sure - but the weather is great - even as I write to you now - it is hot, not a breath of wind (forecast to change shortly though) and the water is so transparent its incredible! Cheers Ben
+Dustin M Hey - as long as I m,ale folks smile its all cool ... taking some flak from my mates on this one for being 'soppy' - they say they never thought I had that in me - perhaps sailing is bringing out the best in me then :)
Watched a few of your sailing videos, great work. After watching this one I had to post this comment, and thank you for sharing. They say animals can sense our true colours, this dog sure did in you two. All the very best for the rest of the trip. Regards from NZ.
+bethells86 - Wow - nice message from someone living in the country of our next stop over :) Totally bonded with this dog and only wished we could take him with us - but for an island dog to become a boat dog - hmmm. Thanks for the kind words.
+Catamaran Impi - Yeah bit of a dilema as to what will be good for the dog. As long as many sailors go see him he will be fine. Great to hear you heading this way, lots of exploring to do in NZ. Our catamaran lives in Westhaven Auckland, the city of sails :) Might cross paths if you make it down this way. Cheers.
bethells86 We hope to get down that way - we are planning to haul for a short spell in Norsands as we head for our sons wedding in SA - outside of that we aim to explore your beautiful land :) Hope to see you guys there - should depart Sunday / Monday weather permitting .
After viewing this compelling story, I was hooked! You have a new subscriber. What a difficult decision; I agree with you and think you made the correct one. Moose is in his element and thriving. I must admit, the tears came when he had the coconut on the pier waiting for you. Looking forward to more of your amazing adventures.
Thanks Rick - you may be pleased to note we are setting sail for New Caledonia again as we want to look into Moose again and bring an update on how he is doing. So - we should be outta New Zealand in the next 2 weeks and are excited to be touring the region of NC again ... cheers mate
+satori1312 - Thank you! looking back on it we could have shortened it a bit, however it is nice for us to look back on and brings some great memories. Cheers
+Devin Stone - Thanks Devin - that dog was so cool we are tempted to sail back to see him again! We actually spoke to a sailor a few days ago who lives in New Caledonia and follows our videos - said he has been trying to catch up with us for some time now and then saw Impi being hauled at the boat yard. He was one of the main guys who got New Caledonia its Unesco status to protect the reefs - a fascinating man and someone who truly does his bit for our blue planet - anyway, we got around to asking him about Moose. He said he had never heard of Moose and was so intrigued when he saw our movie but generally the local guys do not head toward that island as there are so many others off Noumea, but he assures me he is going to 'look into' Moose now when he returns. So - quite a story and quite a dog... cheers
Awesome awesome vlog...so glad to have discovered you guys...doin good stuff...live, laugh & love eeevery day. Absolutely love watching someone who knows sailing...youve done some racing!
Hey Errol - we so appreciate your amazing comment and we treasure people like you who share our passion for life, the sea, animals of our planet and for living a life that is happy and free. We will try to keep the vibe alive and for sure - we live every day as if it is our last. Happy Weekend !
Another great vid friend... Loved the dog episode... Made me sad when you all left-- like I was apart of your adventure... That's great cinematography!!
+SY Explorar Conmigo - Wow - not sure why it took so long for me to spot your comment here but thanks! We really felt terrible leaving him behind - oh man - you don't even want to know the debate which took place between Ana and me ... felt so desperate for the guy but we can't sail around the world with a dog - we have come across too many friends who try it and on some islands the authorities make it so difficult its a real hassle ...
+crsurfvideo LOL!!! I must say I wish that were true :) The wine sadly is coke zero - but they say 'impressions count' so I prefer the 'wine' scenario ... cheers for now
+blugrasssful Thanks ! Trying to find a blend between music and silence there :) Still need to work on the fur over the mic bit ! I had some really terrific bird sounds in the river I could not use because of wind, so yeah - working on that one!
I'm heartbroken for Moose! It must have been very sad to leave the next morning when he waited on the dock with a coconut to play with. I hope he lives long enough for me to make a visit someday. I'm afraid I'd never be able to leave. Anyway, thanks for sharing this great story.
+Jason Budd Hey Jason - I love how full grown men admit their love for animals 'before the world' so to speak. It shows we all have good within us and most people are caring. Must admit it was very difficult for us to leave - we still talk about Moose every day - we have encouraged a number of sailors to head on down there armed with tins of food and so on. I think people here are genuinely confused about what would be best for Moose - he is in such great condition (and naturally so) and he seems very happy until one leaves. Ana reckons he should have a mate with him on the island at least. We wonder if someone would not sneak a few mates there for him :) I guess they would have to spade any female since breeding could become an issue toward the future. Anyway - 'I feel you man' - I too was very emotional when I watched his 'body language' as we departed! Quite interestingly though, I seemed to bond quite deeply with this dog - mates of ours on a cat called SV Shenanigan were also there at a different time to us - watched our video the other day and were saying they felt the dog had formed a special bond with us - they say they never got the same reaction from Moose - perhaps he knew we were overjoyed to be there with him - and perhaps he 'showed us' some of his tricks! Cheers
great long sailing vlog with beautiful scenery. i see you love the same music as i do, what a coincidence ;-) that dog......its just awsome to see it survives on its own, talk about freedom. hes a very good example, and so are you guys by the way.
+Catamaran Impi Thanks for that :-) Im just wondering, did you just liked and unliked my video? Or subscribed and then unsubscribed, because i thought i saw you as a subber and then you were gone. Its no problem ofcourse, i was just wondering.
Catamaran Channel - Hi there - no - I somehow was struggling with both subscription and like - your channel commands just kept flicking at me and then when I went onto my own channel, each time yours came up intermittently so thought there must be a problem! Sorry for that - I am not sure if there is a technical glitch that is now resolved? We leave for New Zealand on a 6 - 7 day passage departing first light so must get some sleep - so please 'poke me' on the other side so we can get onboard with your channel ... perhaps you would drop me a contact email so I can communicate with you if there are more issues as you may want to sort that out (not saure though if it was on your side or mine) ... cheers for now
+Mark Benson Hi Mark - great! Yeah - so many sailors doing different things to move their boats along - I try not to get too embroiled as I have noted some heated discussions around this topic - we are cruisers, not racers so we feel a bit more relaxed about 'sail trim'. Cheers
+Chris S - Chris - you made me smile man ... I can hear your thinking here ... many more beautiful places in New Caledonia right! We are trying to share different anchoring spots with folks and were not that keen to be anchored in a bay of the main island, yet, there was a fantastic amount of bird life up this river and also some quite interesting vegetation. Ana and I were quite amazed crossing the pacific at the lack of bird life (not talking about sea birds particularly) - we were wondering why we are not seeing and hearing as much bird life as when we cruised in the Atlantic ocean? Here on New Caledonia there are 90 plus species of birds - quite something after years of not hearing bird song like this. Also, in New Caledonia there are 3000 plus species of plants of which 2400 are native species making New Caledonia a botanists paradise. Thats quite something! I was reluctant to share all this in the vid as already it was pretty long - but yeah - the birds (GoPro could not capture them visually as it tends to push objects away), the sounds, the vegetation, the reflections of light, the surrounding mountains - incredible! I guess a canoe would have been better than the dinghy but I am very lazy that way! As for the dog - oh man ... attaches himself to someone right away ... almost as if he is looking for a master to take him home ... yet, his hunting skills are amazing! We were told by someone here they watched him wrestle with a huge crab - his nose was severely attacked yet he continued fighting and had his meal. extraordinary! Cheers for now
Love the video! Wow! Moose is such a beautiful dog. I think he has it pretty good, he doesn't look malnourished at all. We would be more than happy to move in with him. Keep up the great adventures. We look forward to seeing you down under in Australia if you sail by.
+Glen Smith - Moose certainly is a 'healthy dog' - wish you guys would move in with him man - the island is a 'wow' island too. Would be awesome to hook up in Australia ... cheers for now
What a great dog story! Dogs are such good friends...I'll bet a dog that size wouldn't be good on a boat in rough weather... so curious how he got there... great vid!
+Will Terry Hey Will - we actually thought of you when making this movie - I wondered how an illustration story would go down (a kids story) with an abandoned island dog who survives by catching fish and crabs and getting the occasional visit from sailors on their yachts - I would not have minded such a story as a youngster - man, even as an adult I find it amazing :)
+Catamaran Impi That really could make for a great children's story...how many dogs have their own island?...how many people have their own island for that matter??? ... maybe he's a pirate dog who has a secret stash of bones buried in treasure chests... :)
Stumbled upon your videos whilst looking at Catamaran holidays - wow you guys are living the dream! How fantastic and I love it that you care about conservation and wildlife, lovely to see. I hope Moose will always be okay there, bought tears to my eyes when you said goodbye and you bonded and cared about him. I'm amazed no one has taken up residence in those abandoned dwellings. One burning question where does Moose find drinking water??
+Susan B Awesome comment Susan - thank you. We certainly do feel we are living the dream - we so wish many more could be enjoying this with us. Moose gets water from many and various contraptions built by sailors which funnels rainwater into troughs. The area sees a lot of rain too and there are standing pools of water around so it seems he has figured it out. Around 37:00 on the video I make mention of cruisers (sailors) rigging up water catching devises but I do realise its a long way into the video and perhaps folks get a bit bored before that point. Yes - agreed - we too wonder why no one has taken up residence there ... would be a wonderful solution for Moose :) cheers
Hey thanks for going to the trouble to explain. I watched from beg. to end, found it riveting from start to finish! Thanks for sharing with us all...you do a great job ☺
Cheers Marvin - thanks mate. We hope to be leaving on the next weather window from New Zealand for New Caledonia - I think we will have to go and visit Moose the dog :)
Muppetych - I can't reply to your comment - perhaps your You Tube settings do not allow it. I will try this way - your comment: Thanks for sharing your adventures. Finding a new upload from Impi is always a joyful moment. 15:18 you talk about traveler, position why, where? Could you do a vid about trimming? Cheers! Regarding the traveller position - yes, we move the traveller position above centre (windward of centre) because this way we bring the boom in line with the centre of the boat. You will note the length of rope (main sheet) between the traveler and the boom ... the angle created through this sheet between the traveller and boom means the boom is not at the same position as the traveller. As for trimming - we are not experts at general boat trimming - we find different boats like different trimming parameters. On Impi, we trim slightly differently to the conventional rules - we for example find we get closer to wind by moving the genoa blocks forward and not aft as most sailors would do. The reason for this is that I like to keep tension on the leech and slacken the foot so the sail forms a deeper curve. We find Impi 'climbs to weather' incredibly well with this setting. The problem most would foresee in this style of trimming is what we call 'back winding' which is where the flow of air off the genoa spills of the trailing edge (leach) into the luff side (forwards side) of the main sail which disturbs the shape on the forward portion of the main. However, we find the balance and get the wind to 'stall' off the genoa before this happens by means of sufficient curvature on the genoa. This is a very different technique to most theories of sailing but really works for us. On some cats, this is not possible due to the length of the mast spreaders (which limits bringing the leech of the genoa in close enough). On Impi we have two sets of spreaders that are shorter and therefore allows us to bring that leech in a lot closer. So - different boats allow for different things and it really is a function of working at it all the time until one finds the best practice for ones specific boat. On Impi our basic trimming practice is as follows: we always keep sails loosened off slightly (never cranked in too hard) - the boat feels more comfortable like this. If we are over powered we reef (and have developed a technique to reef under sail i.e. not into the wind). Also, we always sail to keep sufficient movement on the boat but limit the stresses within the rig itself. We aim to keep as much pressure and impact off the boat at all times - so speed is secondary to caring for the boat. In strong wind to gale force conditions, we reef in accordingly and we like to KEEP THE BOAT MOVING - a stationary boat is subjected to the impact of the sea (we believe) whereas a boat moving with the ocean takes least impact. Again - we are not trimming guru's - we trim for our boat and the conditions according to how our boat feels it. I hope this helps some. I will see if we can put something together over a few passages we do to illustrate this. Cheers for now Brent
+Muppetych thanks for the comment and yes, definitely very boat has it's own Mojo as you say. Some folks have disagreed with the position of our genoas upwind for example, and then when we sail with them they are amazed when we climb higher and faster to the wind .. It causes many discussions at the pub - LOL - we never tell folks how not to set up their boats are different - even similar models are 'weighted differently' according to the items installed on the boat. The trick is always to relax and enjoy sailing and to enjoy watching and learning from those who do it a little better ...
Looks like an accident waiting to happen at 9:40 when Ana puts her head with loose hair down near the working windlass. Perhaps its just the camera angle. Be careful out there. I love you two and love watching your adventures...just great!
+jhdrn - A VERY VALID COMMENT - Thank you jhdrm. I just chatted this through with Ana who assures me she is very careful of the windlass - still - something to keep an eye out for for sure! Ana comments that she is also operating the windlass on a handheld finger depressed style button - so hopefully she would let go if there was a problem. I never operate the windlass from the helm mostly because the chain needs to be worked into the locker, but based on your comment probably a good thing from a safety perspective too. Cheers for making us aware of this !!!
I find it comforting that places like that still exist. Thank you for the video. I wonder how long Moose has been there? My nickname was Moose when I was a young man because I was a big guy. Bien Merci Mon Ami GR
Hi Gary, thanks for the comment. We are not sure how long Moose has been there. We are hoping to find out more about him as we visit New Caledonia again this year. Moose is a good nickname to have :)
Hi Brent, I would love to see a sequel video about Moose the abandoned Island dog. Allow me to suggest a few important shots you might take: Mousse catching a fish and eating it, Mousse drinking water from the rigged contraptions, Mousse sleeping at night (maybe he sleeps in the abandoned resort), and most importantly I would like to see him as he welcomes you to the Island, his initial reaction upon seeing you. I know not all is possible and whatever you show of Mousse is good enough. Bon Voyage ! Rani
Yet another amazing share! I busted out laughing when Moose jumped in the water lol And the next morning there he was, with his coconut. 😂 I was wondering if you have a hose near the bow so that you could spray the chain as you brought it in? Brent and Ana, you have the best channel on TH-cam and I watch a ton of cruiser channels.
+Wakeywhodat Hey man - thanks again form the great comments ! Yeah, I must admit I was quite shocked the first time he jumped - I was busy stroking him and getting close to him (you know what its like with a strange dog - one is careful he does not suddenly turn on you or something) and at that moment his hairs went stiff and he suddenly leapt. I got the shock of my life :) As for the chain - yes, one certainly could spray the chain off but of course we would need to use salt water as fresh water is quite expensive to make with the water maker unless in open ocean (filters clog easily near shore) - and the thing we find with spraying a chain with salt water is that since the chain is at the bow (front) and wind comes from that direction, a fine mist of salt sprays over the boat and against the windows. Whn it dries there are salt crystals everywhere. The issue with this is that one 'walks' salt crystals into the boat and we don't like that. We always rinse feet with fresh water before going inside - we are sticklers for not having the presence of salt within the boat - so - for us is a balance between the 'lesser of two evils' ... if that makes sense ... but mate ... a great observation on your part there!
I am subbed to many sailing videos such as vagabondo. and delos. but I think I enjoy yours way more. I like T and A bit you have shown its not a must to have a google video. thanks a lot mate and fair winds.
Hi Richard and thanks for the comment. We really do enjoy the variety of footage that is out there and I enjoy watching a couple called 'Gone with the Wynns'. They seem to have moved from land based winnebago style living and footage and now into a catamaran. My son is actually sailing with them at the moment and he speaks highly of them too. Richard - I did not understand T and A and also what is a google video?
+Hilton Libanori - Hi Hilton - sailors have rigged up contraptions to catch water and there is good rainfall in the area so I think the dog has enough to drink. We noticed him also scratching in the sand at one point and it seemed had he may get water this way too. Cheers
I noticed when the genoa was raised you had two winches in series for pulling the lines. What is that technique called? I've not seen it done until now, brilliant.
Cool observation but it's pure laziness on my behalf. I am taking the sheet around the manual winch to the electric powered winch :) normally one would do this by installing a crossover which I have been too lazy to do. Very good observation by you ...
I can't believe that nobody has taken this beautiful dog and given him a loving home. Would you like to be left on an island by yourself? If I was there in a canoe I would have taken him. Very sad.
Hi Symphonic Rock Evolution - we really know where your heart is and where you are coming from. We felt the same way, but Moose REFUSES to leave his island and goes ballistic if anyone tries. This is why out of 9 dogs, the authorities put him back there - he is happy to the extreme on his island. We take the situation pretty seriously - we are getting the boat prepared to sail back to Moose in new Caledonia for a 3rd season where we otherwise would have kept sailing on. We have also started a voluntary support structure for a local animal welfare society (combination of several societies watched over by Guy Kane the flying vet) which now receives donations from organisations and people all over the world to care for the animals of New Caledonia, and of course, the star - is Moose! Moose receives ongoing visitors who provide feedback - he is a lucky dog and we believe we have done as much as a person can do to ensure the very best for the dog - and not what we or other people would perceive would be best for the dog. Thank you for caring and sharing ... we hope to share more about Moose as the Go East Rally Group of sailors head his way - each boat makes a donation to the cause and we hope to meet the rally group over there and will take some video of that occasion and also our time with Moose. Cheers for now Brent
Lovely images, thanks for sharing your trip and allowing us to hear and enjoy the amazing bird life, but then you add the backing muzak which seems so irrelevant and contrasting. Perfection does not need a backing track, unless it is played or created by you and enhances the film.
Thanks for the comment - we understand entirely. Sometimes with our outdoor videos and on the boat we get a lot of other sounds like wind noise or engine on the dinghy and so on. I think this was one of our earlier vids ... we got a lot of flak for our music on earlier ones and some flak for the later ones ... thanks for the feedback ... Brent
As bad as this sounds, he needs another dog I think. How often do people visit? Would a dog learn fast to survive by watching him fish? idk what to do :( but should try something like another social animal.
Hi - New Caledonia government keeps the place maintained. I have heard from locals there is a resort establishing there and I guess they will take it over.
+tonyo o - yes - I think so too, however many people have commented saying they feel sorry for him too! I guess we just need to keep encouraging people to be visiting that little island and this way the dog keeps his lifestyle and has company :)
Do you think the island get so many visitors to keep him in good/chubby shape? When he jumped of the pier was that a fishing technique and I am sure he could have eaten those fish on the beach and found other food sources as well.I love your vids they have inspired and motivated me so thank you.
+tonyo o - Hi again - I just received other comments about the dog on our latest video which were not positive so this is the problem as we don't really know what would have been the correct decision - to leave him or take him. Yes, he has a technique to jump off the pier catching fish and also crabs - he loves crabs. He also eats sea slugs. The thing is that he looks INCREDIBLY healthy and his coat really shines which is a good sign on dogs, especially those not groomed. Sailors are visiting him because we have had many messages to thank us for sharing the story of Moose - he is quiet the attraction with sailors now who take along all sorts of food for him and check on his water situation. We have also spoken with one of the guys who set up the entire area as a world heritage site and listed it on UNESCO, to look into what would be best for the dog. Its a problem on many islands we go to where dogs are being abused and are thin and mangy so we are fearful of people removing him to his detriment. A lady contacted me recently to say they were going there to make a movie of him - they wanted permission to use some of our footage. Awesome to know the sharing is inspirational - makes our day !
It's not like someone dumped the dog on the island and took off. The dog was probably born on the island and raised there. Therefore the island is the dog's natural home. So the decision to leave him there was correct in my opinion. Besides, the dog's behavior did not reflect any willingness to leave. He could have tried to jump into the dingy or tried to swim after it but he didn't. Dogs will always jump into your car if they want to join you.
Yes, friends of ours just sailed to the dog to check up on him because we asked them to do so. They said he looks very healthy and happy but 'who knows a dog's mind really'. I received some photos back from them of Moose and will post in my upcoming video along with a lot of other stuff. We should eb back in New Caledonia once the weather allows us to cross and will certainly be paying attention to Moose ... cheers
+willem van de brook - Hi Willem - lots of rain and water standing in pools and also from some contraptions rigged by sailors to channel water into troughs. cheers
....when you say "poisson, poisson" ("fish, fish" Moose speaks French) he dives into the water from the dock ....Illot Casy, in the middle of Prony Bay. It is a small island, about 80 acres, that used to have a resort on it, but the surrounding Kanak people didn't like the resort and successfully petitioned to have it closed. From another blog.
+Maciu Koto - The story is that the place had been destroyed during a bad storm but the houses seem to be degrading due to neglect and not due to storm damage so I would guess they ran out of money and abandoned it.
+slyr1 He eats fish, crabs, eels from under rocks and even sea cucumbers. We had friends visit with us today who have been back and forth to Moose and say he removes sea cucumbers from the ocean and leaves them in the sun to 'barbecue' - returns later and eats them. It is incredible to interact with a dog that has a 'survival instinct' yet also gets fed from time to time. Man - he sure knows how to tug at the heart strings - he gets that 'hang dog' look as one gets back to the dock after a days stroll - the wagging tail when greeting one on arrival becomes drooped and his eyes go all soppy - as we say - his survival skills are amazing - he even uses emotional body language to keep sailors coming back all the time. Taking him home - yes - we thought he would like to be with a family, but also, he needs to be with a family near the water. It appears to us that he is a 'salty sea dog' now - not sure he can be removed from that, but then I am not an expert on dogs so it is great to be hearing different comments. Cheers
slyr1 You never know what life will bring - we were there - kept working at it and took some breaks as they came around ... you never know - yours may come soon and we may see you out here too!
I see that you enjoy your sailing, happy for the two of you. My concern is the abandoned dog, these animals are social in nature, every day must be hell. Can Moose drink this water ? In a very few years, Moose will feel his age, why not rescue this poor beast ?
Hi there - we really appreciate the comment and we know where you are coming from in this regard, but out of 9 dogs removed from the island by the 'Lagoon Protection people' they say Moose was the only one who fought them at every twist and turn and became violent when they tried to remove him. When we first saw Moose there, he was happy and incredibly playful - of course he enjoyed human interaction, but so many dogs on the main island need to be put down and the vets tell us there is a lot of 'animal care education' needed in the region, and he also feels Moose best left to enjoy the island that has been home to him for so many years. We honestly cannot tell you how he would settle in on the main land - we just are not qualified to provide that answer, but Ana has been incredibly involved with so many people on the island and by far the majority of folks tell us he needs to remain in his territory. We do understand that Moose is getting older now - the good news is that since the local folks have become more aware of Moose, they are taking to the water and camping on the island with the dog. Yesterday, thanks to the many awesome people who follow our videos and engaged in the Go Fund Me Campaign, we had the flying vet arrive in his sea plane and treat Moose - we will follow with that video in the next few weeks, but the one thing the vet said to us, is that the dog had done incredibly well compared to others his age having been fending for himself in the wild. Yes, there were some issues - but he assured us this was common for a dog his age and Moose was lucky to have the funding for the care he got. Ana is now working hard at setting up a long term care plan for Moose - she really wants the vet to visit him on a regular basis and just make sure he is 'comfortable in health'. We have been engaged with some AMAZING Caledonian people who go down to the island regularly to be with Moose and to feed him, check up on water and so on. And here is some breaking news .... we heard yesterday that there is a plan in motion to re-establish the resort / development of the island which will bring Moose permanent contact with human beings. So many people are working at the care Moose needs - Ana is very passionate about this - she keeps saying to me that she can't believe that a dog abandoned by people is the same dog uniting so many people through his plight - folks are now rallying around with so much care for him it is amazing. Ana was so happy recently, when we went back to check on Moose - we could hardly find a spot to anchor / moor the yacht - the place was packed with locals - she went on shore searching for the dog when a young man approached her and said 'Not to worry, the dog is feasting with the campers'. He then said to her, 'Hey, you are Ana from Impi - we follow your FaceBook posts' and this is why we are all here, youngsters putting time and effort into Moose. We truly believe this dog is going to change the thinking of peoples minds toward animals - its give Moose a chance - lets give the locals a chance to do the right thing for Moose - lets keep getting him the care we can - Ana is hoping Moose will have the care and attention he deserves in abundance as he gets older ... As for water - yes, there are rain catching contraptions and we are adding to this with new devices too! We have heard there is a fresh water spring on the island but we personally have not yet discovered it so are assuming it does not exist. Hopefully someone will point it out to us - we want to make sure Moose is not drinking stagnant water ... Cheers for now and thanks for caring
google earth shows a bed and name "Hotel Casy" - he might be the guard of that hotel idea. Someone had been there of course, otherwise the infrastructure would look overgrown. Might be the hotel idea did not work out.
+Lasse Särnhult Good Question and I should have made that more clear in the video. Apart from rain water which collects on the island there are contraptions to catch and channel rain which sailors have built. If you look at somewhere around 19:56 in the video you may see a contraption on the back of a signboard there with tubing / piping to a 'collection basin / bowl ...

That is nice to hear. Water can be hard to come by in small islands. But I guess it had to get water or he should't be there alive :D Do you know how long he has been living there?
Lasse Särnhult - I have been asking around - in fact I asked one of the local guys who sails out to see the dog from time to time - he thinks (not sure) the dog has been there 4 years now
HI Steven - yes, he caught fish and drank from a water spring but sailors and some locals also went in there to feed him in later years. Cheers for now Brent
+Reghina Gunzurevscaia - Thanks but please don't tell my friends I am a nice man - they think I am rough n tough ;) - LOL - it would be so nice if you stayed with the dog and what a beautiful island too !!!
+Maciu Koto - yes Maciu - this used to be a resort hotel but the owners abandoned it so the houses are empty and derelict - the dog was abandoned along with everything else ...
dog-snatches-fish-from-pond-with-mouth SEARCH for the above on Google and you'll discover MOOSE's cousin RANI...bringing home the bacon...I mean BLUE GILL fish! It's the video on The Weather Channel. Sorry...I'm unable to post a link...TH-cam rulz?
Log of SV Bluerodeo..... they also met the dog! svbluerodeo.blogspot.com/2014/08/first-weeks-in-new-caledonia.html Seeing that dogs are pack animals by nature it hurts me that he is all alone, he needs a companion.
+Tree L. Bolling (TreeMan) - Thank you for sharing that with us TreeMan. I tend to agree that it would be nice for him to a companion and also someone to move onto the island. If we sail back to New Cal we which we might very well do soon if our boat is completed in time here in NZ, then we will dig deeper into the issue around the dog and the island. I guess with enough interest as is shown here, we can approach the authorities in New Cal and ask what we can do. cheers for now and lets see if we can get back there :)
and yes, you're right, the reason why this dog looks in such a good condition, is precisely because he eats fresh food every day.... no additives, not processed, no artificial sugars and no preservatives, which ALL artificial doog food brands provide, ruining dogs health prematurely........when i was in the attoll of fakarava, years ago, there were dogs there, and ALL they ate was natural food that they ENJOYED hunting every day........... I have NEVER seen such healthy dogs since then........ well perhaps until now, i have a border collie - her name is Luna - and ALL she eats is raw unprocessed food.......... it's a joy to see her roam about..........she's almost six, but she looks like she's just one year old
Who the hell would leave a dog stranded on an island? Someone take the dog home. Only thing I found Googling is about 10 yrs ago, the native didn't like the resort so they petition to get rid of the resort.
Great dog, horrible humans(those who dumped his ass there). I can't believe someone just ditched him there and nobody wants to give him a home. How bloody cruel it seems. He probably waits there every day for the people who left him there.
+ZaphodsPlanet - I feel you man - really do! The guys abandoned the dog when they abandoned the project they had on the island ... very sad but the dog seems to have done well all things considered ... we have been trying to encourage local folks to take it home but there are differing opinions around this ...
+TheGreatDebtpression I dont think its a good thing to get the Dog from this Island ~ he will get sick and probably die in couple Months. We had that with our Dog, we made a longer "Holiday" in our Holiday House (bit over a Year) and when we went back to the "normal" Life our dog got super sick, weak and wasnt happy at all, so we moved to our Holiday House and he feels waaay better.
impi. Just joshing ya. He is a domestic animal. Survival is based on his ability to forage and hunt. Seriously ..one illness or injury and he's done. Nature ..though beautiful..is heartless.
Yip - this is partially true. Growing up in Africa and having spent much of my life 'in the bush' I realise nature can be brutal. Whilst he is a 'domestic animal' he is also a survivor in a country where dogs need regular treatments. The vet had to give him 3 shots before he would go down and said he has the characteristics of a wild animal who always take longer to have the meds take effect. Cheers
+Jude Wallach - Yeah Jude - but he does seem happy. We spoke with sailing friends who saw him after we did - apart from missing Impi Moose said he was fine ;)
+ectazygirl - hey I hear you loud n clear. When we were in New Zealand we had a guy visit us on Impi who is from the region. He actually was responsible for getting New Caledonia listed on the World Heritage Site UNESCO and when we asked him about the dog, he said he never even knew of it. He promised to look into it for us. That dog is a survivor!
+Gerald Bond - Yes Gerald - Have spoken to one of the local guys and wondered if they can get one out there. It needs to be 'spade' - can't have too many dogs out there as otherwise it may become an issue to the future.
so you let the dog alone in the island only for him, is crazy man, crazy dog is not like us :??!! sorry i don't agree with i have petty of the dog ! and i remember the happynes of Robinson crusoé in the island alone when he finaly have a companion -the friday men the hapiness of robin tho have somebody in the aloniness of sea....&...he have a island for himself.---is the same big island for the only dog with the resort privaty
+ruiserpapinto pinto - If I understand correctly you are saying for us humans island life would seem to be total happiness and even then only if we have a companion or many companions. I think the dog too would like to have a companion. The resort I think was abandoned and along with it the dog. In the video I mention I am wondering why the local people have not taken the dog and given him a home, but perhaps they feel the dog has developed a lifestyle there ... I am not sure ... I do not have dog like intellect :) Unfortunately sailors cannot take the dog with them because of visiting many countries and restrictions on animals and so on. In the meantime, the dog has the whole island and yes, he is alone there. No one is in attendance at the resort which is now rotting away between the trees. I hope I understood your comment correctly. Cheers for now
Hey Clint, a wee bit early with the comment there - LOL. The video answering that question is being uploaded from our remote little anchorage for your viewing pleasure - but has been uploading for the past 6 hours now on 23%. So ... we are trying to get this out to you guys ... I think you will enjoy it, so lets hope the internet stream plays ball with us especially since we are trying to get it up in HD. Cheers mate.
+Catamaran Impi
Glad that you were able to find MOOSE...and your "MOOSE HUNT" was successful. LOL
Retitle this episode? "MOOSE HUNT in New Caledonia?" LOL
What a great surviving dog.
+Tom Stanley - Yes Tom - we have similar feelings for Moose ... he does enjoy the visits from sailors and we really dont know what the correct thing would be to do for him
I had not managed to leave him, if I knew he was alone on the island.
New deck dog ;-)
God Speed and fair winds, Johnny
PS: I lied.....I did cry :-(
+Johnny Wilson LOL - I loved the ending to your comment - obviously comfortable enough within yourself to admit it jerked a tear :) - yes - must say, after loosing a dog at a young age and all the emotions that went along with that, I kinda distanced my heart from having one get 'close enough to me again'. But must say in this instance, Moose broke down all the walls and it was a very sad moment to leave - I almost felt guilty - can't explain that but its how we felt in our hearts! Cheers
That's right Moose, not Dutchy.....don't know where that came from. Guess I destroyed too many brain cells back in the 60's and 70's...lol
Take care you two and God Speed...
What an awesome tour guide on Casy Island! That must have been really tough on you guys to leave Moose, but he really enjoys his very own island! That was just an amazing adventure! Thanks guys!
+tristinatr - Pleased you enjoyed this :)
MOOSE !!! What a champ, thank you again for sharing your journey
Cheers,
The Landlocked Yank
Michael - you referred to yourself as the Landlocked Yank again - I'm getting worried about you mate :)
This is perhaps the most amazing Story/Vid I've seen. This just may go Viral man!!
Just saw the video. Your comment describes exactly what I'm feeling. The leaving of Moose crushed me.
Always excited when you upload a new Impi adventure :D
You guys are so lucky to have such an adventure. What an awesome experience.
such a nice short form !! thanks guys ! i miss new caledonia so much
+alberciik Our pleasure - must say we LOVE New Caledonia and will PROBABLY head back that way after New Zealand and in the new season ... cheers for now
I just the long comment on Mooses state. It's awesome that so many people now care for him. He is probably far much happier where he is, than if someone would grab him and take him home. He has been there for such a long time it is his home. And he didn't look underweight or anything. He looked healthy and happy.
Cheers Joachim - so many people visiting Moose - it's awesome to see ..
That dog has an amazing soul...and you guys do too.
Thanks Conrad - we just arrived in New Caledonia today having sailed 6 days from New Zealand, so we will be sure to go visit that dog again :)
Awesome!!! Tell him Conrad says hello. And give him a scratch behind the ear for me.
Conrad - Ana just stocked up the boat with .... DOG FOOD !!! I think I am on diet for a while :)
Woohoo!!! There should be a cabinet there that you can store cans of food so those visiting that don't have food can take one. I wish I could bring my dog Jackson there to visit with him.
Amazing trips and we are enjoyed watching all your films.
Another great video. N-C looks fantastic. A real paradise.
Cheers Ben
Thanks for a great video. Your videos always make me smile, I really enjoy them. Thank you for taking the time to share with everyone. Thumbs UP!
So - we should be outta New Zealand in the next 2 weeks and are excited to be touring the region of NC again ... cheers mate
Very beautiful documentary!
+satori1312 - Thank you! looking back on it we could have shortened it a bit, however it is nice for us to look back on and brings some great memories. Cheers
Wow what a great adventure,,, thanks for sharing.
Your such a boss. Just chillin with your girl and your wine!
+crsurfvideo LOL!!! I must say I wish that were true :) The wine sadly is coke zero - but they say 'impressions count' so I prefer the 'wine' scenario ... cheers for now
Great one my friends. Thanks.
We wonder if someone would not sneak a few mates there for him :)
I guess they would have to spade any female since breeding could become an issue toward the future.
Cheers
great long sailing vlog with beautiful scenery.
i see you love the same music as i do, what a coincidence ;-)
that dog......its just awsome to see it survives on its own, talk about freedom.
hes a very good example, and so are you guys by the way.
+Catamaran Channel Thank you guys - great to be sharing with people who have similar interests - Will have to check out that Catamaran Channel :)
+Catamaran Impi Thanks for that :-)
Im just wondering, did you just liked and unliked my video?
Or subscribed and then unsubscribed, because i thought i saw you as a subber and then you were gone.
Its no problem ofcourse, i was just wondering.
Catamaran Channel - Hi there - no - I somehow was struggling with both subscription and like - your channel commands just kept flicking at me and then when I went onto my own channel, each time yours came up intermittently so thought there must be a problem! Sorry for that - I am not sure if there is a technical glitch that is now resolved? We leave for New Zealand on a 6 - 7 day passage departing first light so must get some sleep - so please 'poke me' on the other side so we can get onboard with your channel ... perhaps you would drop me a contact email so I can communicate with you if there are more issues as you may want to sort that out (not saure though if it was on your side or mine) ... cheers for now
It's great knowing how different ones sail - educational for us landlubbers. Thanks.
+Mark Benson Hi Mark - great! Yeah - so many sailors doing different things to move their boats along - I try not to get too embroiled as I have noted some heated discussions around this topic - we are cruisers, not racers so we feel a bit more relaxed about 'sail trim'. Cheers
really enjoyed your film, great dog, fairwinds to you
+moz frank - Thanks Moz - that sure is a great dog!
So you put your dingie in and went up Uie....OK.
Hopefully, it was very enjoyable....what a dog.....;)
Cheers for now
Beautiful video. Thanks.
Lol - I LOVE your thinking man !!!
Maybe the pup is a reincarnation of a pirate or Capt Cook?
Rob don't spoil the script
RIP Moose. You have touched lives all over the world.
Nice video and a lovely dog.
Cheers Marvin - thanks mate. We hope to be leaving on the next weather window from New Zealand for New Caledonia - I think we will have to go and visit Moose the dog :)
Lovely dog, I went there 2 years ago and got the tour.
Cheers for now
Brent
+Muppetych thanks for the comment and yes, definitely very boat has it's own Mojo as you say. Some folks have disagreed with the position of our genoas upwind for example, and then when we sail with them they are amazed when we climb higher and faster to the wind .. It causes many discussions at the pub - LOL - we never tell folks how not to set up their boats are different - even similar models are 'weighted differently' according to the items installed on the boat. The trick is always to relax and enjoy sailing and to enjoy watching and learning from those who do it a little better ...
+Catamaran Impi sorry - genoa cars
Catamaran Impi
Keep up with the videos, great going.
Nice shirt:)
+Just Catamarans Hey Just Catamarans - awesome T shirt - thanks man !!! You guys are our top suppliers to all ends of the world :)
Girls are girls, sometimes we need to take care of them because sometimes they are like children.
Hi Brent,
I would love to see a sequel video about Moose the abandoned Island dog. Allow me to suggest a few important shots you might take: Mousse catching a fish and eating it, Mousse drinking water from the rigged contraptions, Mousse sleeping
at night (maybe he sleeps in the abandoned resort), and most importantly I would like to see him as he welcomes you to the Island, his initial reaction
upon seeing you. I know not all is possible and whatever you show of Mousse is good enough.
Bon Voyage !
Rani
Hey Rani - lets see what we can do in this regard - will take note of your comments and see if we can deliver ...
Cheers
Yet another amazing share! I busted out laughing when Moose jumped in the water lol
And the next morning there he was, with his coconut. 😂
I was wondering if you have a hose near the bow so that you could spray the chain as you brought it in?
Brent and Ana, you have the best channel on TH-cam and I watch a ton of cruiser channels.
+Wakeywhodat Hey man - thanks again form the great comments ! Yeah, I must admit I was quite shocked the first time he jumped - I was busy stroking him and getting close to him (you know what its like with a strange dog - one is careful he does not suddenly turn on you or something) and at that moment his hairs went stiff and he suddenly leapt. I got the shock of my life :)
As for the chain - yes, one certainly could spray the chain off but of course we would need to use salt water as fresh water is quite expensive to make with the water maker unless in open ocean (filters clog easily near shore) - and the thing we find with spraying a chain with salt water is that since the chain is at the bow (front) and wind comes from that direction, a fine mist of salt sprays over the boat and against the windows.
Very very touching
I want that dog,but the end was amazing
I am subbed to many sailing videos such as vagabondo. and delos. but I think I enjoy yours way more. I like T and A bit you have shown its not a must to have a google video. thanks a lot mate and
fair winds.
Great video. Is there fresh water in Casey Island? What does the dog drink?
+Hilton Libanori - Hi Hilton - sailors have rigged up contraptions to catch water and there is good rainfall in the area so I think the dog has enough to drink. We noticed him also scratching in the sand at one point and it seemed had he may get water this way too. Cheers
Liked this video so much we named our new dog Casey. It seemed fitting, he was a abandoned dog in Hawaii.
That is so awesome Thomas - would love to see a vid of him some time with caring people like you :)
Cheers for now
Brent
Thank you, now I can stop worrying about him.
One question......who is maintaining the pier in such excellent condition?
Hi - New Caledonia government keeps the place maintained. I have heard from locals there is a resort establishing there and I guess they will take it over.
What a lucky dog...
We should eb back in New Caledonia once the weather allows us to cross and will certainly be paying attention to Moose ... cheers
where do this dog find his water ?
+willem van de brook - Hi Willem - lots of rain and water standing in pools and also from some contraptions rigged by sailors to channel water into troughs. cheers
....when you say "poisson, poisson" ("fish, fish" Moose speaks French) he dives into the water from the dock
....Illot Casy, in the middle of Prony Bay. It is a small island, about 80 acres, that used to have a resort on it, but the surrounding Kanak people didn't like the resort and successfully petitioned to have it closed.
From another blog.
That's awesome information - Moose must have been confused with my English :) 😜
Did they say why they were abandoned
+Maciu Koto - The story is that the place had been destroyed during a bad storm but the houses seem to be degrading due to neglect and not due to storm damage so I would guess they ran out of money and abandoned it.
What does he eat when nobody goes to the island. I would have taken him with me what a smart dog.
Cheers
My brother I only wish I was with you god bless you both.
Would love to visit that dog and bring him food
maybe if we can win lotto one day.
slyr1 You never know what life will bring - we were there - kept working at it and took some breaks as they came around ... you never know - yours may come soon and we may see you out here too!
What about water for the dog?
+Lasse Särnhult Good Question and I should have made that more clear in the video. Apart from rain water which collects on the island there are contraptions to catch and channel rain which sailors have built. If you look at somewhere around 19:56 in the video you may see a contraption on the back of a signboard there with tubing / piping to a 'collection basin / bowl ...

That is nice to hear. Water can be hard to come by in small islands. But I guess it had to get water or he should't be there alive :D Do you know how long he has been living there?
Lasse Särnhult - I have been asking around - in fact I asked one of the local guys who sails out to see the dog from time to time - he thinks (not sure) the dog has been there 4 years now
Baie Uie? Lots of onions?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mangroves, known in Costa Rica as ’The Walking Tree’
The dog's real name could be "Mousse" which can be translated from French to: "Ship's boy" or "Cabin boy"
+Silver4567z - AHHHHH! Now thats an interesting comment - never realised that! We wondered about the name - thanks for that ...
So thats how this abandoned dog survived on the desert island, he learned how to catch fish.
HI Steven - yes, he caught fish and drank from a water spring but sailors and some locals also went in there to feed him in later years.
Cheers for now
Brent
YOU ARE SUCH A NICE MAN… SWEET CASY, PLEASE TAKE ME NEXT TIME WITH YOU I WILL STAY WITH CASY AND PLAY ALL THE TIME.
+Reghina Gunzurevscaia - Thanks but please don't tell my friends I am a nice man - they think I am rough n tough ;) - LOL - it would be so nice if you stayed with the dog and what a beautiful island too !!!
There are houses behind the trees
+Maciu Koto - yes Maciu - this used to be a resort hotel but the owners abandoned it so the houses are empty and derelict - the dog was abandoned along with everything else ...
+Catamaran Impi Ahhh I see
Someday, when Moose is limping and his ribs are showing, it may be time for a sailor to take him home. Until then, Moose is King of the Island!
+whatshappeningworld - I like that - Moose - King Of The Island !
Why didn’t you take him with you to the next island that has people
dog-snatches-fish-from-pond-with-mouth
SEARCH for the above on Google and you'll discover MOOSE's cousin RANI...bringing home the bacon...I mean BLUE GILL fish!
It's the video on The Weather Channel.
Sorry...I'm unable to post a link...TH-cam rulz?
+Romeo Whiskey - I checked that out - how crazy is that !!! I never knew dogs liked eating fish - always thought that was 'cat business' ..
Log of SV Bluerodeo..... they also met the dog!
svbluerodeo.blogspot.com/2014/08/first-weeks-in-new-caledonia.html
Seeing that dogs are pack animals by nature it hurts me that he is all alone, he needs a companion.
I have NEVER seen such healthy dogs since then........ well perhaps until now, i have a border collie - her name is Luna - and ALL she eats is raw unprocessed food.......... it's a joy to see her roam about..........she's almost six, but she looks like she's just one year old
+alberciik Incredible - goes to show the importance of food and life ...
Who the hell would leave a dog stranded on an island? Someone take the dog home. Only thing I found Googling is about 10 yrs ago, the native didn't like the resort so they petition to get rid of the resort.
Interesting B.J. - we wondered what happened to the resort - it is a beautiful little island for a resort
+Catamaran Impi Someone needs to rescue Moose...no doubt he's lonely. He was probably on the dock all night watching you. Poor guy...
Cheers
I couldn't leave the dog
I feel a little bad for that dog, idk...
+Jude Wallach - Yeah Jude - but he does seem happy. We spoke with sailing friends who saw him after we did - apart from missing Impi Moose said he was fine ;)
why nobody wants to rescue this dog?
+ectazygirl - hey I hear you loud n clear. When we were in New Zealand we had a guy visit us on Impi who is from the region. He actually was responsible for getting New Caledonia listed on the World Heritage Site UNESCO and when we asked him about the dog, he said he never even knew of it. He promised to look into it for us. That dog is a survivor!
maybe someone should take moose a companion, so he is not all alone.
Cheers for now
Take the damn dog if he is abandoned jerks
So. the dog starved to death ...or perhaps just died of loneliness...lol
