Today at Badgerworks, we take on a fairly complicated build. A simple enough kit, the Airfix FW190 starter kit, but with not one but two photoetch sets!
We also try out some new tools and techniques, so stick around for quite possibly the longest video on a 1/72 scale plane ever...

I'll add to this list as time goes on.
Please note I buy all of my own tools and materials and all opinions are my own. I use everything in this list. You may find these items cheaper from other vendors, the links are for reference - it pays to shop around.

Really enjoyed this build video, as I’ve made a couple of these kits myself and know how tricky the fit is, re fuselage, interiors and nose cowlings, etc!
Part of the joy of this kit though, is overcoming the need to sand, fettle and dry fit, because once you do get over those obstacles, you’ve got yourself a good little model which only requires a decent paint job....🤪
I was amazed at the PE job......it might have ended up with the “fist of death” at this desk, so hats off for doing such a good job of it! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks for this build video. My wife bought me four of the starter kits from Aldi and I built the Mary Rose first after a hiatus of over 50 years in airfix modelling. I decided to leave the F.W.190 til later and am currently building the Spitfire 1a and have experienced similar problems with the fit of parts to those you mentioned with the Focke Wulf kit. I'm glad it's not just me.

Wow! I made literally thousands of models, Airfix, Tamiya, Revell, when I was a kid, but this puts my efforts to shame. I used to knock out a Focke Wolf 190 in about twenty minutes, plus maybe another ten minutes for painting. Never realized this level could ever be attained.

Great video as usual. This Airfix kit is one the few kits to beat me up. I finally tossed it into the bin. Horrible fuselage fit. So kudos to you for finishing it. nice video, I'm finishing one these, for the camo i just enlarged my camo callout sheet to the size of the model, the pattern out and used to mask the plane. Its super easy, quick and cheap. This approach allows a direct copy of the manufacturers instructions if thats what your looking for. Cheers.

Was Rio you do what max-afterburner does, ive begun to use airbrushes and ive found that it can take a while to line up but it looks pretty good afterwards, also for the mottling camo on the sides of a focke wulf just do what the germans actually did and go free hand in spots with different colours. None of the german fighters had the same camo as the hired a painter to come and do what he wanted

That Airfix FW-190 isn't all that old. It seems that the 'soapy' styrene compound Airfix are fond of using, is prone to flashing. I have a Boulton-Paul Defiant new tooling from a few years back, and that had some flash on the parts, likewise the ski undercarriage Gloster Gladiator, new tooling. Older kits can be recognized by the pilot figure - if it's the 'Biggles' one, well detailed, with one foot forwards, then it's an older kit. The kit you have there has the new pilot, who's quite thick set. Going by the number on the tail, might one surmise that the pilot's name was 'Heinz'?

You are brave to leave in your mistakes, a very fine finished model. I was always frustrated by Airfix's irritating refusal to include the tail swastika on German aircraft models, after all it is an historical fact of life, not a support of the Nazi regime. Airfix started my love of modelling when I was ten years old but after a few years I defected to other manufacturers, particularly Tamiya because of Airfix's problem with the tail insignia. My minimum size these days is 1/48 but that is an effect of age and eyesight. Thanks for your video!

I don't know if you are one to care about such things, but the armour plate in the Brengun etch is for tha A-8/R-2 variant, the Sturmbock. So are the additional frames for the canopy. These contained additional armoured glass, and were often not fitted on the real thing, as they severely affected visibility.
They don't really go with the marking of "brown six" that is provided in the Airfix kit.

By using the Extra Marmor Panels and the extra frames (that held bullet prove glass) you turned this bird into a "sturmvogel".
They where intented as bomber Killers. When they where First used they where very sucsessfull but the extra armor made them slow and reduced there manuverability, so they where easy meat for escortfightes. This lead to heavy loses and as a result they where only used for a couple of Times.
Only a few Dozent where ever modified that way.

I hate to be the one to spoil the party, but the wingtop cannon bulges are grossly mislocated, especially on the port wing. Those bulges belong directly behind the outboard gun barrels. Other than that, you certainly did put a great amount of polish on that turd of a kit. Well done!

Great video of high quality, but more important you have patience and skills of almost biblical proportions.
As a kid when I became fed up with the swarms of Airfix aircraft dangling on cotton threads in my bedroom I took them into the garden one by one and used them as targets for my ageing BSA air rifle. Those models were poorly finished and could not have held a candle to your artistry, but they were fun to build, gave me pleasure when displayed and eventually further fun upon their demise - I certainly got my two bobs worth out of them.
Thank you for sharing the benefits of your experience. As a matter of interest how many hours do you think that you spent on the FW 190 from start to finish?

I started building Airfix models in the 1950s (!) and I have always been under the impression that the hakenkreuz (swastika) was not included on decal sheets was, and is, to protect sales in Germany, where the symbol is illegal. Not too difficult to make up a stencil. Surely the specialist decal makers can provide a range of the different styles and scales though ?

I know its a starter kit, but with the added Eduard and Brengun 'bits' and your own set of paints, tools, etc - its no longer a starter kit. Nice work though. Air brushing results are excellent!! Main mistake was mixing up the wings decals, i.e black/white cross should be on top.

I used to make airfix models when I was young lad and I'm sure they included the swastika in the sixties and seventies. It's just another example of political correctness gone mad!

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Not really. It's illegal to display a swastika in Germany which is a huge market for Hornby (who own Airfix) and obviously for Revell being a German company. While they could argue that it is an artistic endeavour and possibly get around it that way, or have different decal sheets for German versions, it's easier for them to simply not include them. If people are really that concerned, they can make stencils or buy aftermarket decal sheets.
As for me, if they come with the kit, I'll put them on. If they don't, I'm not that bothered.
