I depend on my bike to get me as far away from technology as possible. It's currently snowing where I'm at, so watching you finding strip malls and sadness is more fun than shoveling my driveway.
Interesting motorcycle tech analysis. All the more reason to favor a nice paper map with squiggly lines that have dots next to them. Having said that, I truly liked the garage door opener.
Once my TomTom GPS asked me a quadruple negative question. My brain caught on fire and I nearly went through a stop sign. It asked something like "are you sure you want to stop canceling not avoiding the interstate?"
Hilarious. Love it. Still laughing. If all product reviews were like this I would surely watch more. 😂 incidentally, I use Beeline for new/complex routes - it means I leave the phone in my pocket and just look at the Beeline button occasionally as it prompts my next turn. I guess I like the lack of a screen and all the associated distractions. Thanks for a super entertaining 25mins 👍
Not sure how Calimoto plots routes in the US. Here in the U.K. I find it a great app for finding roads (often locally ) that I would otherwise never have used. When plotting on the “twisty” settings it finds routes off the beaten track, proper old routes through towns, villages and country side. Sometimes I’ll pick a circular route and it’ll want to take me on routes I know will be through urban areas so I’ll discard and adjust the settings, direction etc until it gives me something that appeals. I agree, occasionally the instructions can be a little vague or confusing but with use it gets easier to follow. Much better route planner than google maps if all you want is a ride rather than simply a route to a destination.
That was a giggle. I love Calimoto, Cali is my friend and she's shown me some great rides, but I'm also very dominant with her, she bends to my will when I import a gpx or plan the route myself on a map first, using waypoints to take the roads I've chosen. She's golden either way, as submissive as you like. She gets her own back when I submit to her, mixing up the route quite wickedly. It's not Cali's fault that you're surrounded by dull, straight roads punctuated by strip malls. Basically, the more you play with her the more she responds to you and gives you something back. I've also got the Aoocci (A - oh - see) C6Pro that I'm bedding in, wanted it for the dashcams and TPMS mainly. In answer to your question, when is tech too much? It's when it interferes with your ride instead of being set and forget. Looks like Santa brought you a new jacket and other gear? Lucky boy. I got one too 😅
Nah I've had this jacket for awhile now. It's ugly but works really well. It's like three or four jackets in one. The helmet is relatively newish. Wasn't very expensive and I like it a bunch. Will be great when the weather gets nice and I'm back on dirt.
I use Rever now to plan my motorcycle trips. But let me tell you that I have planned several multi-day motorcycle and bicycle trips all over the world. Don’t overplan! If you do you can suck the joy out of the trip. Plan one day at a time going in the general direction. As long as you won’t be entering any places where you need reservations or some kind of permits in advance (or a toll pass) you’ll be fine. Enjoy the journey.
Perfect timing with this video, as I have been reviewing these devices. I have a Beeline Moto now and I appreciate the simplicity of it and I think you may have convinced me to stick with the less technical solution.
I think whether it's good or not is debatable. Based on the comments on most reviews people either love it or hate it. It's designed to work with their device, but I like that allows me to create routes that are designed for motorcycle rides (you can choose fun or fast). I find that I have to massage it a bit to find the route I want to take. They did introduce a premium subscription for some features. I don't need them, so I don't bother with it. I personally like it, but it seems that I tend to like things that others don't.
One funky thing about Google Maps & Android phones. So I planned out a trip on Google Maps to the British Shoppe about 90 miles away through the back roads, then did "send to phone" (edit: in my desktop browser) Well on the phone, it displayed just the straight line route, so I was disappointed. However, during the ride, I was surprised that it guided me through the route that I planned on the desktop. Alrighty then.
Used Calimoto for a tour of the Baltic states last year and it led me down some great windy roads northeast of Vilnius I would never have found in a million years. Also helped me find (and remember!) some great local roads where I live. I’m a fan.
What Calimoto is good at is finding nice routes to waypoints that you add. I live in the D.C. area and most roads are busy and slow. But if you put in a couple of waypoints in interesting locations on the way to your destination, Calimoto does a good job in picking fun routes between waypoints.
New Year's Day and you're planning for a June ride. Wow. I thought I was eager to get back into a road trip and mind isn't till the end of April. BTW, a Garmin Xumo is an excellent GPS for a motorcycle. I managed to drop mine (fully my fault, not a fault of the GPS) off the bike in Montana at 75 mph. I saw it bounce and hurried back to get it. it still works perfectly. Well scripted as always Bug. Your stuff is excellent.
My 2007 Road King Custom has a speedo and a gas gauge. I carry paper maps and my phone stays in my vest pocket, even on my last cross country trip... but that's just my favorite. Glad you enjoyed the ride you had, Bugnoto. Any ride we get is a good one.
Tech has it's place when you need it, better than stopping every few miles to read a map 😊 but most of the time I prefer nothing much. But like you say, just switch it off. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Great reviews, it's a no from me 😆
"So what did we learn today ..." Other than the gray skies and rainy, it looked like Florida. 11 curves in 318 miles. On your cross country trip you will get to practice following road signs ... about 3600 miles worth! When Chyanna and I ride, we might use a GPS in a larger city, but have found that most motels are on the main drag. At least you are riding. Waiting for a new rear tire because of the Metzeler recall. Bummer. Ned in SC
Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't get any of these Car Play/Android Auto screen things. You have to wire it in, which is a hassle, you have to connect it to your phone so you'll have to keep that charged, you're restricted to apps that have Car Play/Android Auto compatibility so what do you gain over just sticking your phone on your handlebars? And if you're worried about losing/damaging/destroying your phone, then have a rummage in that drawer you put all your previous phones in and use one of those instead, hotspot it to your latest phone and save all that money to spend on petrol and coffee from your local strip joint or burger mall. You mention Beeline, I've got one, and I really like it, the app (which you can download for free in advance of buying) is great for planning, as you can add and drag waypoints around, and the device itself is really discreet, but it does still need to be connected to your phone, so you'll need to keep that charged. Maybe if you mention them a lot, they'll send you one 😉
When I bought my '24 Z900, I had the option of getting the MT-09 or MT-10 but I hated all of the tech it had so the Z was at least a step down. Got myself a quadlock just so I could use Rever or Apple Maps to get to far locations like the Mohawk Trail or northern New Hampshire, opened a lot of doors for me, but never would I invest in a bike that had Apple Car Play integrated or anything like that.
I have rever !!! also have a issue LOL...not bad for road planning , but i prefer my Garmin 360 even if its old and need to change the battery ... Just go a second camera not sure why but got an action4 it sounded better than my action3 since i can now order Dji mini mic..... more money ... to much teck...maybe but I got it. Good ride sound like me if I ever do a utube I will review my equipment as I have a S**it load , i could use 1 new item a week and probably be good for the summer.......ouch. ps you can always say you had a good ride and see a deere.. another ps your lucky to ride its -16c here /on jan 03 and it will be like this for the next few weeks.... And yellow is sitting in its tent outside Alain & Yellow
I'm pretty bad at navigation without gps/phone. But I'm totally a maps warrior. I love exploring maps, finding scenic routes and going there and exploring. I've found some amazing routes within an hour from my place. The best part is that the route is unique and others dont know about it, so there's fewer people out there on the road.
Another fun experience is when it starts raining, and the raindrops that manage to fling around the windscreen count as touches on Google Maps on the phone. That's an absolute blast, lemme tell ya.
The main issue with all the CarPlay devices is that you still need your phone connected, and that connection is typically a major battery drain. So now you also need phone powered for longer rides. So why not just mount your phone with power and use a nav app. While I love CarPlay in function if built into the bike, I don't get the need for an extra device. Just use the phone itself.
The biggest problem with using cell phones is that the camera can be damaged by the vibration of the motorcycle, which is why these products are available
@@BugMotoChannel That is curious because I've used my phone with a Quadlock mount for 10+ years without incident. These were all iPhones if that makes a difference.
This is like the USPS navigation system they give to drivers who are doing Amazon package deliveries. It's infuriating. Turn left? Where? Also, not that driving distracted in a car is safe or anything, but it seems extra suicidal to be fiddling with screens while riding a motorcycle at 55 mph
I REALLY love my AfricaTwin screen and toggle to Carplay for maps and music....never had any tech on prior motos, now not sure I could go without.pretty nice feature
actually the Aoocci doesn't look like a bad deal. I have a much more expensive gizmo, and can't figure it out. I'm sure it has a power down mode. Mine isn't super responsive to my gloves, but i think that's my gloves. If they're too sensitive, they go bonkers in the rain.
Back in the day , you used your memory to navigate . If you had never gone the route before , you memorised the route from your street directory ….yes ordinary folk could achieve this even in busy cities with about a weeks practice . I am a tech person , but don’t use navigation , because all you need is the sun , and know where east is and west is ,
It's the Chigee AIO-5 Play. It's about $400 on Amazon. The Aoocci that's in this video is somewhere around $170 with the promo code. I'd go with the Aoocci.
You wouldn't make it.... But I don't think that matters very much, we all have our wheelhouse. Calimoto: It's the best Motorcycle GPS road software out there... and that pretty much sums up the general market for Motorcycle GPS road software at the moment. Nobody else does the "Out and Back" type automatic planning that Calimoto attempts, so I give it a pass there. If it weren't for the Motorcycle specific features in Calimoto (like the "Out and Back" thing), there would be better software for navigating by, but there isn't. Let it go another 5 to 10 years, it'll be interesting to see what's available.
You're in Vancouver as soon as you cross into Washington from Portland. There are better motorcycle routes once you're outside of Vancouver (north and east of Vancouver)
Yeah, I used to use Calimoto until they required Yet Another God Damned Account. Now I just use Google Maps. Anyway, I got a Tracer 9 GT+ this year because my '07 FJR-1300 is nearly 18 years old.
