Walter and Lao Russel were the stewards of Swannanoa starting in 1948 and brought it back to life as the home base for their University of Science and Philosophy with Walter's sculptures throughout the gardens and inside. Walter passed in 1963 at age 92 and Lao maintained the University and the grounds until she passed in 1988 at which time her organization maintained the palace and grounds until 1998.
