I visited this wonderful building along with my wife in 2016. Having intimated that I was a Past Master from Scotland, I was treated so well by those hosting the tour, a real highlight of our visit to Philadelphia.

@mhuman18 It's important to know, though, that when the British Foot Lodge (which was held under the Irish Constitution) left after the black brethren were made Masons, they were givern a permit to meet as a Lodge, but not to carry out any Masonic work or admit new members. Prince Hall being the forward thinking and resiourcecul chap he was, petitioned the Grand Lodge of England for a charter from them. This was duly issued and African Lodge no. 459 was born.
Later on, after more and more african Lodges were consecrated, Prince Hall left this world. As homage to this great man, these Lodges which had come together to form their Grand Lodge and calling it African Grand Lodge....on the death of Prince Hall, it was changed to Prince Hall Grand Lodge.

Those black men that were good enough to have fought and die alongside their white counterparts in the army during the independence war.....were not good enough to join their Lodges. It is quite the opposite today. It is my belief that Prince Hall lodges stand as a monument to that journey...from a crassness to civility.

@@gwyneth7812 I am really sorry that "clandestine" masons have portrayed us that way. We take an oath not to do wrong under the penalty of death (although that is figurative, not literal). All I can say is that where I live, under the Grand Lodge of Florida, any unethical or criminal behavior would be stamped out immediately. I do admit; however, that there very well may be those who use Masonry to do the things you claim. When we take our bond to protect our brothers it is very clear that they must be a "... worthy brother mason". Unworthy brothers gain no protection, and in fact if I found one I would see them expelled as far as in my power.

@@gwyneth7812 Not all of Freemasonry is the same and not all lodges are the same. And certainly not all Freemasons are the same. Freemasonry as a means to honest self improvement and relaying teachings of ancient knowledge is not harmfull in and of itself obviously, but as an institution Freemasonry is definately conducive to conspiratorial organizing, due to its secrecy and rather elite membership. Membership maybe open to everyone (including women in the La Droit Humain branch of Freemasonry) but the reality is that it is still a rather elite fraternity, and as such provides a platform for opaque backdoor deals. And that is a real problem rarely acknowledged, let alone adressed, by Mason's. A comparable situation would be the decades long cover-up of systemic sexual abuse of children within organizations of the Catholic Church, for example. It's a very serious problem, but that doesn't make all Catholics pedophiles. Just my two cents. 🙂

A number of years ago their master for one year was a Muslim. My own lodge will later this year accept a Muslim entrant. The word 'Allah' was used by Arabic-speaking Christians to mean 'God' centuries before the birth of Islam. Whilst it is closely associated with the Islamic faith, today, this is principally because Arabic-speaking peoples in the modern era are far more likely to be Muslims than any other religion. 'Allah' just means 'God' in Arabic.
It is also worth noting that Islam shares belief in the same God and Old Testament texts as Christianity and Judaism. It is mainly in the belief of what followed the Old Testament that these Abrahamic religions diverge.

It seems Freemasonry has somehow wronged you? If so, I apologize. If a specific brother has wronged you in ANY way I would suggest informing their lodge, or the Grand Lodge of your state. Suspension or expulsion does happen to members who do not follow their obligation. The compass reminds us to keep the vices and superfluities that tempt us in life within due bounds. No one is perfect as a circle, but we try and do the best we can.
The charitable money comes either directly from our pockets or the proceeds of raffles, fund raisers, or auctions. In my small town of around 500 people we raised over $20,000 during the cities Fall Festival last year selling food and drinks donated by our members. 100% of that money went directly to help reopen our small school of 50 students that closed in 2015. We hope to buy the school a bus to help more students in 2024. Good men join Masonry, and get the opportunity to work with other good men to become something even greater than ourselves.

He who talks with a slumberer
    who talks with a fool,

    Weep over the dead man,

    Weep but little over the dead man, for he is at rest;

Do We Meet Him on the Level?
      To meet upon the level
Is an easy thing to say,
But when it comes to practice,
Do we do it every day?
Do we meet him on the level,
If the Brother chance to be
Just a little out at elbow
      Or baggy at the knee?
When we meet him in the workshop,
Do we greet him with the grip
That we do the noted statesman
      On a European trip?
Do we meet him on the level
And give him just the chance
That we do the dashing fellow
With the creases in his pants?
If fortune does not smile on him
      In sunshine and repose,
Do we meet him on the level
      In his second-handed clothes?
Do we invite him to our church,
And seat him in our pew,
And warm our hearts by clasping hands
      As Brothers ought to do?
Yes, we meet him on the level,
      On the broad Masonic plan,
Whenever we know him to be
      A Mason and a man.
We'll meet him on the level,
      And part upon the square,
And then perhaps he'll vouch for us
When we meet him over there.

Rather embarrassing for an organization that supposedly rules the world. The money that built that impressive building could have been better spent helping humanity. But, since it already exists we should embrace it.
