    I've seen a lot of different bass 'lessons' or covers on this song, but I believe this is the only *CORRECT* version I've seen to date.

    • @theduppykillah
      @theduppykillah 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is the ONLY correct version on YT. The rest all get the intro double stop slide wrong then they play the rest of the track in first position. Of course it’s completely ok to play the track with your own variations and note choices, but this is an accurate score of this brilliant groove by Rainey

    This bass line almost seems predestined it's so perfect for the song. I think the biggest challenge as a bassist is to write something that's interesting that actually enhances the song rather than distracts. A lot of bassists will just settle for root notes so they're not obtrusive. But this bass line is a perfect example of how you can take advantage of space, countermelody, and syncopation to push against what's there in a positive way.

    I'm not a bassist, but I am a big fan of the instrument. You covered this perfectly, including little details so many others might have missed, such as NOT going back to the E on the first time through the figure in the intro, but doing so every other time. Also, your intonation is so clean. Great work!

    I saw on a retrospective that Walter Becker hummed this bass line to Chuck Rainey to get across what he wanted, and of course Julia aces it. This is a savvy group of Dan fans and you're keeping us happy!

    Listening to Steely Dan is like laying down in a hot summer night and watching the stars....making you feel really small and insignificant. These musicians are out of this world and it does not matter who is in the band at the time....bass ,keys, guitar whoever, will play along the line and not note for notes adding their own feel.
    But the real question is :"How do they do it?"

  • @davidpancerz5820

    As always Julia CRUSHES her tutorials! Great post and this was super clear. I think that Josie was a really funky fun bass with lots of style (as in 70s bell bottoms and sequins, but I digress). Loved this, and I'm a fan of the Steely Dan popular songs like this. They recorded so clearly and with such excellent tone that its hard not to love their music if you like cool jazzy fusion like sounds. I will use this tutorial to learn how to play it better than I imagined I could previously.

    One of the coolest basslines played by one of the coolest bassplayers. Kudos to you Julia. I have loved playing this bassline and your expressions show you really are channelling Chuck Rainey. I note that it is evident that a bass player wrote this, unlike many songs that it is just a simple backing. He expertly provides a solid foundation but adds the tasty licks, runs and syncopation that makes this outstanding. André in Sydney
