It's a pleasure to see you perform and particularly to do Leland Sklars excellent work. Some of his best was done with James Taylor. To have you do so in Vienna is an extra treat. I lived there as a very young boy. We had a house across from the wine gardens in Grinzing, and I was pleased to return to see it a while ago with my wife. I like literally every bassline from Leeland Sklar. His playing contains the most unexited and cool, band serving, musical lines that bring the parts of a piece together. He sure is the bassplayers bassman. Every player of and style is able to learn something from Lee.
My favourite Leland Sklar performance is the already mentioned "Falling in between" with Toto. The first time I heard it I thought: "Wow, they can do that??? It's nearly Jazz- and still sounding like Toto". An incredible album, I totally agree.
So right you are! Incredible album from start to finish. To play with Toto is to be considered one of the best. A great honor for both the band and Lee.

Leyland's discography is soo impressive. He always brings something special. He fabulously incorporates soul, heart, swing, and groove along with experience and schooling. Also seems like a helluva nice guy.
I love that he is getting some notoriety for his countless contributions to music. I had no idea as a young child, but something resonated with me and his playing, without me even knowing who the players were. So many of the songs he played on are songs I love. When I discovered the common denominator, I was floored. All this attention on guitarists and singers, and here is this monster of a musician making it all come together. One of a kind.
my favorite bass lines of leland are jackson browne's "doctor my eyes"(those smooth yet quick fingers in the intro...it's just efficiency at its best) and " rock me on the water". but of course, i love everything he plays:)
Guitar players absolutely amaze me. I've been playing drums since 1964 and when rehearsing/performing I'll focus in on either bassist or six string guy and see if I can understand how playing guitar is done, I can't imagine how those ten fingers know what to do. It's all very abstract to me...never could make sense of what the logic is that accounts for the many variations and configurations that make one a guitarist. When I brought this up during our warming up minutes some time back, my guitarist said that he and the bassist couldn't figure out how drummers can do what they do when having to work all four limb, each doing a different thing in different time. I guess we are all hardwired as kids to survey the instrument world and rather quickly, one stands out and yells, "Hey, it's me...you were born to play me, me, me!" There must be something to this because the first time I sat at a kit, I just started playing a typical high-hat, snare 4/4 groove based upon what I saw Ringo playing on Ed Sullivan while kicking the bass out of pure instinct because I did not consciously know what I was doing. I thought, well this is it and drums will sure be a far better enterprise than taking years of piano or violin lessons and still sounding like a putz. By the way, young lady, you own the bass
First of all, Julia, just a beautiful job on presenting this. Inside Out/Phil C.from 1990 features Leland killing it towards the middle. At times, it appears like he’s using 3 fingers, as he magically unleashes in a fury
Love the way you feel the rythem of the bass its inspiring
I’d really enjoy seeing & hearing you demonstrate Mr. Sklar’s bass lines on Jackson Browne’s 1977 song “Running On Empty”. It’s not particularly complex, but it’s the kind of baseline that both drives and holds the song together.
BTW, the photo of the ceramic pineapple sitting on the amp head, is that your mojo charm Julia?😉
Yes! Thank you for putting this out here for us lifelong Leland fans. Nice work.
