    “Of his vast collection of strange, rare books on forbidden subjects I have read all that are written in the languages of which I am master; but these are few as compared with those in languages I cannot understand. Most, I believe, are in Arabic; and the fiend-inspired book which brought on the end-the book which he carried in his pocket out of the world-was written in characters whose like I never saw elsewhere. Warren would never tell me just what was in that book…”
    Keep up the good work and, as always, stay safe!

    Simply amazing. Howard's way of writing in first-person, but in doing so creates the atmosphere that makes you feel like it's second-person and you're there in the room. Add in Kirowan and Conrad, and it comes off as a Mythos version of Sherlock Holmes. And Ian's narration is the cherry on top of this dessert of a narrative. Bravo!

      These stories are hilarious comedy in the 21st century. I swear, I laugh and laugh reading some of REH & HPL stories. Two men who really never understood women writing women is delightful, unintentional comedy.

      Hi Nathan -- we've mentioned it before, but the Conan, Solomon Kane, Kull, etc, stories, by Howard aren't necessarily in the public domain. There's a lot of debate on the subject, but given the rules here on TH-cam, it's definitely not worth taking the risk -- sadly!

    • @Whalewraith
      @Whalewraith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HorrorBabble I have no idea how that works but I'm into the comics and Ablaze publishing started doing really good adaptions of the Howard Conan stories under the title the Cimmerian. Marvel threw all of its toys out of the pram and tried to get them shutdown and stop comic shops from carrying the books. It went quiet for a while but now there back so I guessing the copyright didn't actually apply.

    • @HorrorBabble
      @HorrorBabble  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a complicated issue -- there's no way we'd survive if pitted against a giant like Marvel. Better to air on the side of caution ... for now!

      @@HorrorBabble absolutely, no need to take a pointless risk. Its funny though that Marvel are trying to act as if they own the character (he joined the Avengers at one point )when its actually Funcom Norway that are the IP holders to the R E Howard properties.

    Ah, this Ring is the very same one depicted in the first Conan story -- "The Phoenix on the Sword" -- the Ring which Thoth-amon had lost years before and then suddenly reacquired when one of the conspirators against King Conan, Dion of Attalus, suddenly revealed his "ring of good fortune." Dion says of it, "I had it from a Shemitish thief who swore he stole it from a wizard far to the south, and that it would bring me luck. I paid him enough, Mitra knows. By the gods, I need all the luck I can have, what with Volmana and Ascalante dragging me into their bloody plots -- I'll see to the ring."
    . . .
    "Ah, here it is!" He triumphantly lifted a ring of curious make. It was of a metal like copper, and was made in the form of a scaled serpent, coiled in three loops, with its tail in its mouth. Its eyes were yellow gems which glittered balefully. Thoth-amon cried out as if he had been struck, and Dion wheeled and gaped, his face suddenly bloodless. The slave's eyes were blazing, his mouth wide, his huge dusky hands outstretched like talons.
    "The Ring! By Set! The Ring!" he shrieked. "My Ring -- stolen from me --"
    REH wrote "The Haunter of the Ring" as a tie-in to his Conan mythos with his own 'Modern-Day' tale of horror, linking the distant Hyborian Age to his Present.
