Peter van Melsen has a disturbing ability to linger in my mind the days after a story. Sometimes I swear I see him out of the corner of my eyes.
Ohh, I think this is my favourite of the Van Melsen series so far. Ellen and Van Melsen make a great paranormal investigator duo and I'd love to see more of them.
I mean no insult to the other narrators on youtube but I've gotten bored with so many of them. This channel on the other hand has never once been boring or tedious. Your readings are always very well done and you either pick or write exceptional stories that never let me down. I feel as though I should have a nice bottle of wine and an assortment of fine meats and cheeses to enjoy with these stories. And thank you for introducing me to the writing of Lovecraft and of course the others who have joined in on his wide world of weird. I particularly loved the black stone and out of the aeons. Damn those are perfectly creepy stories.
I kept waiting for the Doctor to appear.
Always great to have my favorite narrator narrate some original work. These Van Melsen stories are peak mythos.
Don't know if you will see this Ian, but I think you're my favorite author, and Peter van Melsen is probably one of my favorite characters. I also really enjoy how York is becoming the equivalent of Arkham. Lots of history stacked on top of each other, and the architecture is quite literally doing that too. Got a 13th century butcher street there (the Shambles), Roman ruins buried underneath the cathedral (York also the home of Constantine the Great), rare Anglo Saxon stone wall additions, became a city ruled by Vikings (Jorvik), followed by Normans and their architecture, later 15th century fortifications all stacked on top of Roman fortifications. Literally have stories of a bagpiper being executed, somebody given the blood eagle by Vikings, and people left to die in their homes from the bubonic plague in that city. If you're in York, also check out the stories behind the artwork and stained glass windows there. There are speculation that monkeys were in York as well. It's a great setting for a parallel to Rats in the Walls where Lovecraft mentioned multiple historical architecture. Anyways, I know I'm rambling, but I would love to know what part of York Ellen is excavating. Who knows if Bronze Age Britons were worshipping the Old Ones in the deep depths of York, and underneath all the Roman ruins are forgotten Cyclopian Architecture. Hahaha

“Cooks Books!” 😹 Yeah, I know some accountants. Guess I’m the only one who found that nice little clever injection.
As someone who used to work as a Viking in York, I found this most entertaining and immediately thought of the Punchbowl and Barley Hall on Stonegate. 😁
I'm Scottish but have always loved York and been fascinated with the history of 35 Stonegate (so imagine my delight in discovering this story).
A few years ago when the property was still a tourist attraction instead of an Oliver Bonas store, my husband took a photo of my reflection in the cheval glass which (still) stands in the wainscotted room. When he showed it to me, all that could be seen in the glass were streaks of mist (like ectoplasm). No sign of my reflection. Thinking it weird, he took another photo which turned out normal.
At the end of our tour we repaired to a nearby hostelry (actually the Punch Bowl - one of my favourites) to have a drink and look at all the photos we'd taken in the house. The one of the mist in the mirror had disappeared.

Van Melson has become a favorite and always want more. Now Ellen has returned with now knowing she is a BioArchaeologist has touched my own youth as an archaeologist in my college days. Looking forward to more Ellen (Jennifer) in future.

Side Note: I was smoking my pipe with a mixture called The Haunting by Cornell&Deihl. They have a line of tobacco called The Old Ones which has several mixtures that pay homage to Lovecraft.

As said in a few comments... TH-cam narrators, especially weird tales and horror channels tend to start feeling.. redundant rapidly.
You have quite a timeless, and very fitting voice, intonation, cadence etc etc, to be honest.. I couldn't put my finger on why this channel is the one I always come back to for 2am (or 3:30 this time) stories. Very classic feel, I genuinely get the same cozy feeling I'd have had as a young teen, tucked up and reading horror shorts. Anyway basically, love this channel

Your Van Melsen series is some of the best Ive seen, I've grown rather fond of him and his adventures myself, I always look forward to them and save them for nights I have quiet and atmosphere to do them justice.

I think that the artifact is the
same with the one which killed a student in the US (Blake or something like that) and was thrown to a river.
York was protected with walls from outside. But what about the threat from below?

A good story, you have a marvelous way with writing and narration (The GB? accent helps alot), but ultimately I see the character, in this particular story, as a common thief.
I can only imagine Monty Pythonish scene, where the guy sales them the tickets, and then instantly rips them in half, due to the fact that he is also a doorman. 😄
