Tell Better Tales with Composition

- Visual stories can be told in a much clearer way with good use of composition.
Learn how to tell the story of the Red Riding Hood through effective use of 4 compositional techniques (also known as principles of design in art).
1:00 Foreground, Middleground, Background
1:50 Symmetry
2:48 Framing
3:54 Contrast
You can easily pick up these techniques even if you're just a beginning artist or art critque.
Some have noticed that this video looks similar to a book which I have read a few years ago. It could have influenced my thought process and how I teach visual language in classes. But the content in this video is not found in the book.
Nevertheless, do check the book out, it’s an excellent entry point into composition:

Love the video. It's most likely based on the book '' Picture This'' from Molly Bang that i recommend to anyone who wants to understand composition and its impacts. It is a brilliant book that i took back out a few weeks ago. It has more information than this video but i prefer video and narration. For some reason it is easier for me to retain the information. Thank you for this post.
I highly recommend that book too. I made this video for my students to learn composition, and did not refer to (or even thought about) the book throughout the process of making the video.
Nevertheless, it is an excellent book, will put it in the description.
Thank you for watching!
Agreed: A great book. THEE BEST boiled down book about composition eVer.
Thank you so much ..as a beginner ..it's very difficult for me to understand composition ...now I will go buy the book
"I" not "i".
The voice and art are all AI.
Idk, if red hood can’t see a gigantic wolf to her left, then that’s her issue. 1:40
Hee hee. It's more metaphorical - or she's friends with the wolf. Or she has something planned. =}
@@goteamslugs Yeah It was more metaphorical
@@the_jolly_bunnyYep.
This channel is not only informative for art students, but also filmmakers! There is so much overlapping so I've been wanting to educate myself on painting. Thank you!
So glad to hear that! Thank you too!
As someone who’s been struggling with composition lately, this video helps a lot, especially with how simple the composition is as demonstrated in this video
Taking a semester in art school versus watching this video !!!
Thanks for finally making me understand composition ❤😮❤
Glad to be of help!
Wow!! I feel like designing random "objects" like characters and scenery just to move around and arrange a scene and write about it!! This is very inspiring!!
Go for it!
First time ive seen compositions explained in this way. Very informative.
Greta info!! My suggestion is if the Voice can be human, not ai generated will be better.
Good ears. Didn't realize this was AI. Just thought this lady was a weirdo.
I KNEW IT
It keeps getting harder to spot. That's so frustrating.
@@TheRealDanTheManYT
I didn't notice except for some strange errors.
AI advancing so fast is scary.
Yes unfortunately the voice really takes away from the video, if wasn’t for the positive community in the comments I wouldn’t watch it
the 'art' is ai too...
great stuff, I've heard a lot of these concepts in photography and graphic design videos, but I liked hearing them from the perspective of illustration and storytelling, thanks!
I hate to tell y'all this but the voice and artwork in this video are AI
:(
Yeah i mentioned it in the description
How can you tell?
And can you tell us why that matters? More specifically, why you say, "I hate to tell y'all..."?
@@Alderberanirgal in the art community, using AI is looked down upon, as it steals from others' work.
Watched this video three times and its so good. 5 minutes of superb information. Thanks for publishing this.
Thank you!
This is only what I've been looking for forever!
this channel is extremely underrated thank you so much for your videos, its is very informative.
I appreciate that! Thank you 🙏🏼
Just wow we need more of that about the story making
Best video ever! I’m working on a poster of Josephine Baker and this is incredibly helpful. PS: No fluff; pure content. Thank you!
I'll keep them in mind for my next drawings, thank you. 😊
best most concise composition tutorial. kudos. been referencing film stuff lmao.
Thank you for this excellent lesson!❤
I really love the way you explain it so easily for me to understand! It's really hard to focus sometimes, and even then, it's not always explained so well in a way that I'd understand, sometimes they're too vague, and then I'd have more questions than answers...
So I'm really thankful for you making this video! I was able to eagerly learn something new today, and it's motivating to pick up on my art skills again
Thank you for your kind words! Keep making art :)
Learnt so much from this short video. Thank you!
This is a great videos. Valuable lessons that are straightforward and really engaging with the beautyfull images! One little niggling thing: Big Bad Wolf’s eyes- the pupils didn’t always line up to be looking at Little Red.....Also, I like the leaves, branches, tree trunks when used for Framing were mirror images- and it works! I feel, because that way they don’t detract from the characters
Brilliant video, beautiful artwork, thanks for sharing & crediting amazing illustrators. Feeling that Wolf energy ~ blazing eyes & sharp fangs ~ look out little RED!!! ❤🙏🐺🐾🐾🌳
This is one of the best and interesting channels I've ever known. This makes me understand more about art and their implied meanings
Thank you! More to come!
Great video! The concepts are clearly presented and the use of examples that allows us to compare the different alternatives makes it easy to understand and remember. Many thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Simply the best. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Fantastic video! I’m building a lesson plan on teaching my fourth grade students how to create a picturebook, and I can’t wait to incorporate this resource. I would love to see more of this type of video !!
I saw the thumbnail and description and instantly thought of Picture This...
This was well done. The AI skill exhibited here to make the video was superb. Keep it up.
Very well done! Bravo!
This video was pure GOLD!!!!

Well made, informative, smooth. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ahhh I love the video! Not only very informative but also extremely visually pleasing🥺

Fantastic video. This technique really illustrates the lesson well.
Wow this video is gold!
Thanks for explaining and showing. 👍🏼
Thank you for watching too!
This was really interesting, thanks! I like photography and that's been my door into trying to better enjoy all kinds of visual art.
Very well explained! Thank you!
Thank you for presentation. Very structured and well thought analysis of composition and meaning. ⭐
Thank you! That means a lot
Wow fantastic. I have a short story channel and I have to come back to this video again and again. Great, thanks.
Thank you so much, have a great time with your channel too! Have checked it out, so much cool information!
i am making a comic (just the idea, the art is made by a very talented woman) and aranging the characters on the pannels is hard, specially if they are moving, this is very helpfull for conversational pannels. i am saving this.

My pleasure!
Thanks for disclosing that the artwork is AI in the description, most won’t even do that.
Just love it.
Thank you!
Great video
This is from Molly Bang's book 'How Pictures Work'
surprised they didnt even mentioned it
Because I did not refer to it throughout the video production process, from scripting to video editing.
I could have been influenced by it as I was introduced to it by my art teacher when I was a student many years ago, and I read that book again a few years back.
Seems like there are similarities, but definitely no plagiarism. Visual language is universal.
@@LearnAboutArt It's plagiarism to take someone's ideas and pass it off as your own. How hard is it to say, "I'm going to summarize Molly Bang's thesis on composition. For more information, check out the book 'How Pictures Work'.
@@justonefyx My dear, the content that I covered in the video (the 4 compositional techniques) cannot be found in the book. I just flipped through the book yesterday. If you can find it, do tell me the page number. Thank you!
@@justonefyxmolly bang did not invent the concept of composition, she just broke down and analyzed existing concepts. artists have been utilizing composition techniques for as long as there has been art
this might be the most creative use of Keynote (that’s what you used to make the video I believe?) to make a video I have seen. Bravo!

Thanks lady 😊
Thank you
This whole video is based on the book 'How Pictures Work' by Molly Bang. At least have the decency to credit her in your video
Thanks for the comment. Hate when channels do this
I hear an AI voice reading this. There are multiple instances where the reading is not human. We should expect the full-scale use of AI to loot creative processes and the existing work of artists and actors. It makes money for the people who publish these videos
Yep. Even the ART in this is AI.
@@myrrhis01
Hi. I have that book in my cupboard, and the last time I read it was a few years ago. However, throughout the production of this video, I did not refer to it for a single second, and I did not credit it because it wasn’t even on my mind when I produced this video.
Also, these are basic visual language skills that are taught in art schools, and red riding hood is a very accessible story that helps anyone who wants to learn visual composition learn it easily. I made this video for my grade 8 students, and when I completed it, I thought Hey why not let other people learn it too? So I posted it.
I just flipped through that amazing book. The content looks similar to this one because visual language is universal. Do check the book out and you’ll notice that not a single page was copied directly here.
Finally, I have not monetized my videos at all, because I truly believe that education should be made free. Everyone can and should learn about art and the visual language so that we can pursue our innate human nature of making, creating and expressing ourselves.
I will put the title of the book in the description as it is an excellent book to learn about composition.
Hope that clarifies some of your doubts. It’s ok if you are not convinced. Thank you for stopping by :)
@@LearnAboutArt. I can tell you have the book in your cupboard because you copied everything from it. Claiming that "'these are basic visual language skills and red riding hood is a very accessible story" are very poor arguements. One of the main reasons this visual decronstructing skill is taught in art schools is because it was so well documented in Molly Bang's book wich was first published in 1991 . And she also uses Red Riding hood throughout the entire book!!! Claiming you just happen to have made a video using the EXACT same techniques in combination with the EXACT same story, Red Riding hood is ludicrous. I can fully understand the wish to make something accesible for your 8th grade studends, and also the wish to share it afterwards with the rest of the world. But passing it of as as your own work, or claiming these are "'basis visual language skills" only show a disrespect for the original author. It's shamefull, especially for a youtube channel dedicated to art, monetized or not. You can do better, give credit where credit is due...and not just when people call you on it.
As a complementary video, I would mention David Finch's video on composition. It's also really useful.
Will check it out!
Someone did an art about little red riding hood and the wolf. I think that the composition and the vibrance is amazing. She's a friend of mine and her yt is rhovertte
Please tell me what software you used for voice narration. It sounds great!

An excellent, beautifully designed and presented video that will be very useful for those artists and illustrators who want to learn more. Yes, I have Molly Bang’s book too, but this is definitely not a copy of it.
Feels like a weirdly specific thing to focus on defending
Thank you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@bluethan806if you read the other comments it makes sense.
Reminds me of the latest chapter of your wings and mine ( a VERY good webtoon, I highly recommend to any-/everyone that sees this comment xD)! Also I think One Piece/Oda has always done a very amazing job at this!
I'll check it out! And yea many manga artists use composition really well
@@LearnAboutArt yeah I agree! And yes the chapter I was talking about in your wings and mine is S2 Ep. 62: Best party ever pt.1 (goosebumps). Bc even with no context you still would very clearly see what the author hakei was trying to convey. 😭
I think and with one piece I think the first time I distinctly remember was when Whitebeard was introduced. Generally the introductions of important and powerful characters is always special.
You know instead of Red Riding Hood, I could only see Ruby Rose.
Regardless, this video really help me come up with ideas for my arts
Hahaha awesome!
Thankyou
Nice video
is this AI art?
Yeah its in the description
@@LearnAboutArt ironic an art channel would rather support a robot than a real artist
@@violet-yh5kt You're assuming that the small art channel has the money to support an artist and is choosing not to.
