I don't dispute the meaning of the words themselves; obviously, gold is where it is; so is dirt, mold, or air; but the words are used to convey an idea that is completely wrong, namely, that you cannot predict where gold will be. You can. And in that sense, it is NOT just "wherever you happen to find it", but rather, where the laws of physics guarantee that it must be.

I retired 2 years ago and bought a new atv, metal detector, slice and other prospecting equipment all told about $15,000 then traveled all over Idaho, Montana and Nevada. So far I have recovered about $12,000 I guess that I am one of the lucky ones and I loved every minute of it, just me, my dog and sometimes my brother....priceless!

i took my son out west(CA) for his 18th b-day and panned and panned and never found one nugget. hit the redwoods and camped on the pacific beach in southern oregon where there were large rocks near shore and on shore.
it would of been nice for the gold we panned to have covered the gas$ on our almost 6000mi adventure. that would of been the icing on the cake.

Anyone who has prospected for any length of time, and consistently makes a profitable income from it, knows that this is true. It's just like poker - it's POSSIBLE for any hand to win the game. You could say that "a royal flush is where you find it"... but that doesn't make it worth staying in every hand just for that small chance. So successful players fold a LOT.
Likewise, successful prospectors pass on 95% of the places they sample and only work the best. Gold follows rules, and so must we.

There are some exceptions to the rule of that impermeable layer (where gold is usually found in that foot or two above bedrock or some other dense layer of material). I recently heard of a miner here in Alaska that was hiking through an area of recent landslide on the side of a hill. He literally saw and picked up a 60 oz nugget off the ground that was released with other gravels by this landslide. The law of probabilities still applies to gold but it is not 100%.
Yea everybody has a gold story of a somebody finding a huge couple pound nugget laying right on the ground. It's a fun thought but it ain't true.
There's true stories of it happening.
Oh, the stories are often true but they're akin to being dealt a royal flush in 5-card draw. It just doesn't happen that often. Far better chance of being struck by lightning than finding a nugget just laying around. Not to say it doesn't happen - so does getting stuck by lightning :)
I think that nugget is what this guy refers to as "last year's gold." If someone hadn't come along by chance and picked it up, eventually it would have been pushed by the forces of nature (gravity, water, wind) to a lower spot where it would have stopped when it hit bedrock or something like bedrock.
So you could walk around on land recently exposed in a landslide and hope you find a giant nugget, OR you could find the spot where nuggets like this one that have become exposed throughout thousands of years could have moved to and stopped.
(At least that's what I think this guy's message is.)

Is it common to find gold at the bottom of waterfalls?
It can be, it's just a question of whether the gold is in the river or not. It's usually outside the crest of soil caused by the waterfall's splash zone

Some sand mixed in also. And there is areas at the bottom of the creek that the bedrock is showing. Thats where im gonna look in the creveses u were talking about in bedrock

Common assumption is gold is found in rivers. In Zimbabwe its found everywhere...
In Australia, you can find gold nuggets as large as a man's fist just sitting on the ground. But rivers? You'll be lucky to find one of those.

I thank you for the information. I tried panning once. I happened across a panning club working in a creek. They shared their equipment to let me give it a try. I didn't find anything but gold colored chips and they said it wasn't real gold. But I have to say, it was very relaxing. It allowed me to forget about life's stresses for a few hours.
For most amateur prospectors that's more than they find all summer. Some areas are richer, of course, but that's still pretty good. I've never met anyone who, without dredging, consistently averaged a gram a day.

I used to dredge in California before the idiot Ahhnold signed a bill outlawing it. Moonbeam also signed a bill to continue the ban. I mainly went to the American River, but also did some on the Bear, Yuba and Feather Rivers and tributaries.
This guy is giving you the basics of how and where to look for gold. The suction eddy behind a rock or other obstruction will typically concentrate more gold than a pressure eddy will in front of the rock, but you may get lucky and find larger pieces in the front. Tree roots and moss along the banks can be productive. A good thing to look for dredging are the deep channels in the main water flow. As you dredge them keep an eye out for mercury covered gold. It looks much like lead. A good way to test it is to use a Garrett Gravity Trap gold pan and drag the piece across the bottom of the wet pan. If it streaks, it's probably lead. You can also use a flame or acid to burn it off, but be sure to stay upwind from the smoke & fumes. Since mercury is liquid it flows to the lowest spots in the channels, and it sticks to gold like a magnet to iron. Good luck to all you gold seekers.
A book I found to be valuable when I was a greenhorn was by Dave "Ounce A Day" McCracken called Advanced Dredging Techniques.

Usually where I find good high bank gold, it is also good if not better in the water. However, a lot of areas, the water has been worked over, and the banks have been ignored.... which is part of the reason you hear guys say sample sample sample

You just need to get out there with a pan and start sampling; I'll have a video uploaded soon on how to do that, so make sure you subscribe. It helps if you know gold has been found in your immediate area, so it narrows down the places to look.
My dad took us on vacation in 1970 we went on a mining tour. There was huge vats of acid used to clean the gold across the valley we could see the side of a moutain had been cut away a Huge streak of Gold could be seen in that mountain. I think imo there is places that have loads of gold they just don't want us all to know. In Africa there are places that are very Dangerous because diamonds are laying on the surface but they are owned to be sold . Platinum is even dug up too in some countries. Everything for a price in this world 🌎

"Gold is where you find it" is an adage...a proverb...a traditional saying. Taking an adage too literally is a sign of taking yourself too seriously. As it turns out, people who find a lot of gold do not try to convince other people that they know everything about finding gold, or that they can disagree with age-old adages that old timers found clever. They just quietly collect it.
Unexpected; not inexplicable. Certainly it is "where you find it" - so are cars and air and, well, everything. Of course it is where it is. The literal meaning of the words I don't dispute; but it is used in gold-prospector parlance to mean that you can't know where it is, or that it might be here just as well as somewhere else, and "just go dig someplace, after all gold is where you find it" - and that just isn't true. It is far more likely to be some places than others.
Best gold I ever found was on the opposite side of a bend. It was a sharp bend though and a ton of bedrock was there to catch the gold splashing up in that area during insane floods.

A good video for explaining the most common deposition type, but the reason people say "gold is where you find it" is that sometimes it settles in areas where you do not expect to find it.
For example, you could have an outside bend, where you should not find gold, but perhaps thousands of years ago it used to be an inside bend that was collecting gold for a long time.
Sometimes you find a big nugget in the middle of a river.
Sometimes you find it waaay up high in the trees.
It is most likely where you say, but it is also any other place that gravity works.
I have worked a river, which is not supposed to have any gold at all, and found a huge boulder on the inside bend, dug way down to a false bedrock and found nothing, over and over again, nothing.
I try another spot, which doesn't look likely at all, and find big flakes and small nuggets, and I'm not even at bedrock. there's a lot of karst, so maybe before a natural bridge collapsed and formed a canyon there was some deposited here or some other cataclysmic event changed the path of the river dramatically, but it's a river that should not have gold, on a bend that should not have gold, and a pay layer that should not be where it is.
It is where you find it.
Damn, there is not even a gold bearing mineralization in the entire drainage, for dozens of miles in any direction, or any geological formations where it is typically, or even atypically found. Karst, man.

Good info. I just bought a panning kit, and this video is really helpful only problem is that i live in waushara county, wisconsin.. the rivers and creeks here are almost completely sand and muck. Theres ocassionally a row or patch of basketball sized rocks, i dont know if theyre close to bedrock or not... i did try with a shallow frisbee and im pretty sure i found 3 tiny flakes. It seems like gold judging from the video i watched on how to classify it.

Placer gold (gold in pieces) is never found under the bedrock, by definition. If it were, it would be in veins in hard rock and there is no practical way for small scale hard rock mining most of the time.

Please be very careful when "digging" or sluicing out behind large rocks or trees, its extremely dangerous! He doesnt mention but with the river flowing adding pressure and you remove the dirt behind it, what's likely to happen should be obvious, but the rock will lose grip an be dislodged, YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE BEHIND IT WHEN IT HAPPENS! Be safe, my uncle died this way

Best place to find gold is where no one else has looked. Benches and places the river or creak once was is the top of the list. Just remember bedrock is everywhere. Yet know most only are looking for some colour in the pan. If so this guy knows what he's talking about. But even upon that hill, there could be ancient bedrock that was once on the bottom of the cut the stream made that is now many feet above the bottom. Trust me on this I have found many nuggets with this logic. Even one 1.5 once nugget that was just sitting there.
