Backgammon, it's not just something you shout at a brexiter! Anyway, a while back I mentioned in a planning video that i wanted to cover more games like Chess, Go and Backgammon. Just for the sake of completion. Backgammon really is a classic that is legit fun and, well, i think if people want to consider themselves well rounded gamers, it's one worth having a look at if you haven't already
Interesting note - the 'snap' mechanism in Marvel Snap came from the developers playing a bunch of board and card games and deciding to incorporate the doubling die from Backgammon. If you're confident you're going to win a match, you can snap to double the stakes. You then can't snap again, but your opponent can, doubling the stakes again.
I love the fact that backgammon allows for social interaction that is often absent in chess while providing opportunities for some cerebral decisions based upon probability & statistics... And it is ancestral to games such as Pachisi, and Ludo...
In ABOUT 3 minutes, not in precisely 3 minutes. The only thing worse than a boring pedantic comment on a video is an inaccurate boring pedantic comment on a video. You added precisely nothing of value to either of our lives typing this out.
The doubling cube is not only used when playing for money, but also when playing matches, to some predetermined point goal. A 7 point match is a good length match in my opinion.
So a couple of questions - do the checkers that are in your inner area have to leave, go round the board and come back again, or are they already "home"? The checkers on the bar - they have to go back into your opponents inner area- is that counting back using the dice or using the number of the point? e.g. if you throw a 5 is that supposed to go on the 5 point or count back and go on the 2? Thanks
i dont understand the movemnt rules. what exactly gets you off the middle other? what determines when you cant pass becajse the opponent is in the way? and the final most important question, is this just mancala if it had abs?
Backgammon is fun! I haven’t played in a while but I want to again. I don’t like playing online though and I only have the Lord of the Rings Backgammon set, which is hard to play since the pieces are gold and silver rings and they’re super hard to tell apart! I’m starting to learn Mahjong with actual scoring rules and that would be another good classic to cover! There are lots of variants though.
Your board is not correctly set-up. I'm not sure if there are any alternate set-ups that I' m not familiar with, but in the classic way, the 3 pieces in the outer board are 2 spaces away from the 5 pieces in the home-board , not 1.
Crawford rule - IF match goes to, lets say, 5 points and score is at next game 4-X you CANT double. example after the score 3-0 we won 1 point and score is 4-0. and our opponent cant double at next game. he must win 1 game and after that crawford rule is OFF and our opponent can double at first move. Jacoby rule - in money (unlimit game) GAMMONS didnt count as 2 points or 2x. WE NEED TO DOUBLE and only WITH cube gammons is ON. small additional rules about dices - if you cant do a move with two dices but with only 1 number on them, you must choose and move your pieces with HIGHER number on both dices. if you can do only 1 move or only 2 moves with both dices you must choose a move which is used 2 dices together.
This is the one that showed kid me monopoly was a novelty not a game. My old man would play me n my brother to experiment with strategy’s to use against the adults.
That's why it's played in a match format, to a certain point value. There might even be several of these matches and the winner is the one who wins the most matches. This minimizes the luck factor.
I do like Backgammon but I find it tough to persuade people to play it with me which is also an issue I have with Go. If I ever am in a situation where I'm with someone who would want to play it there is almost certainly more than 2 players present. However one of my gaming group has ordered a Mahjong set and I'm hoping that that is classic game we can get played regularly.
The way you placed the 3 stones at the beginning is wrong. This is a game dates back to over 5000 years ago and the Mesopotamians were first to play it.

Backgammon was always "the other side of the chessboard" for me growing up lol. Finally learning it was a real treat!
Board set up, the three checkers on the seventh pip should start on the eigth pips…. Or is set up different in NZ?
I followed a guide online. So not sure.
Nope, you are correct. Oops
Dammit, i thought the setup was off at the time but went with it. Again i'll blame this on toddler parent brain
I've added a pop up that will show a link to a correct setup. Might not pop up on phones though

I'm in my 40s and I just learned backgammon this year. Now it's great fun. As I'm getting older I'm enjoying these simpler more strategic games.

We never used the doubling die as a kid, I was told it was more for people betting on the game. It's probably for the best
It can be, but it can also speed up the game

@@jimphilidor9031 Ah, that makes perfect sense. Thank you
The hair on the board got to me a little lol
? I've just looked at the photos and i cant see what you are talking about.

Can't wait for Go!
This game is actually so good.
Cant wait for a cthulhu expansion
Backthulhu!
Good series. This is fun. Actually never seen this game played, it was very helpful.
We play backgammon all the time. Fantastic dice rolling game

If it doesnt have an insane complex learning curve I have no interest... after some beer... o m g this is so fun

I suspect those details are far beyond the casual introduction to the game this video is supposed to be. But it is interesting stuff
Could do with more engine-building, drafting, secret legacy envelopes, giant plastic miniatures and neoprene. I have notes ….😂😂😂

I can't beat that review of tic tac toe

at 57 seconds the board layout is incorrect. The 3 pieces in the middle of the board should be one over to the left for each player
Correct.
I like the colors of the board and checkers, but the checkers are too small for the board.
Two Players Two Sides One is Light ⚪️ one is Dark ⚫️
No need to get a fancy set, Goodwill has sets all the time.
Totally agree. That said, nice sets look nice. lol.
When you’ve got two very skilful players, the game comes down to luck of the dice. I’ve even read it described as a coin toss.

You have the board set up wrong. Each of the sets of three pieces should be one space to the left.
