G4 Upgraded iBook G3 Clamshell Overview

  • In this video, I go over the process of modding and demonstrate an Apple iBook G3 Clamshell, that has been upgraded to a PowerPC G4 (7410) CPU. This modification is quite involved, and requires desoldering and replacing the original PowerPC G3 (750) CPU with a G4. With the G4 CPU installed, extra cooling is needed to allow the CPU to run at a normal temperature, since the G4 runs much hotter than the G3 originally did. With the G4 installed, the system runs quite a bit faster, and is now able to boot and run Mac OS X 10.5, Leopard.
    I performed this mod for Greg Hrutkay from the Hrutkay Mods TH-cam channel, who I suggest you check out here: / hrutkaymods

    That is really cool. I never would have guessed that those CPUs were pin compatible. I am also surprised that the voltage regulators can handle the higher performance chip.

    I sold my G3 iMac like 15 years ago to somewhere in Germany to a blind school that teaches people braille and they modded the mac to use a G4 processor too! This was FOREVER ago.

    Since you went to the trouble of swapping the CPUs... is it possible to swap the onboard ram also to larger chips or are they already pretty much as large as possible? You might be able to find a larger PC100 SD ram IC assuming it has the same pinout that may be able to give a bit more...

    This is amazing! Apologies for the incoming flood of questions here but...
    1. Not sure if asking is out of line, but if I can track down the parts to do it with, would you be willing to perform a CPU upgrade on my indigo clamshell, and if so how much would you ask for the service? Would you be open to trades, maybe? (I have a tangerine clamshell looking for a good home, fwiw)
    2. What's a good upgrade that can be done with minimal case modification? Is there an option that will outperform the 466 MHz CPU of an iBook SE that doesn't require the additional fan and heatsink, or even an equivalent? Do CPUs from the DualUSB G3 machines work for swaps?
    3. Can the GPU and soldered RAM be upgraded at all? I would think maybe they could be substituted with the same parts off of an iBook G3 DualUSB logic board?
    4. Only semi-related, but do you know of a good place to track down the video cable needed for the screen resolution upgrade?
    Sorry if any of the questions come across as ignorant or anything, and I hope you're having a great day!

      I'd definitely be able to do this mod for you, however it will not work on an Indigo Clamshell... This is only possible on the original Blueberry and Tangerine (non-Firewire) Clamshells. I'd probably ask about $175 to do the service, as it is involved, and it took me around 3 hours to do the one shown in this video. You'll be on your own for cooling modifications.
      I'm not too sure about the compatibility between the G3 CPUs on the Clamshell SE model and dual-USB iBooks, but I suppose I could look into it.
      The GPU cannot be upgraded, as these boards are built to have a specific GPU installed. As for RAM, I noticed there were some empty pads where RAM could go on this iBook board, but I'm not sure the system would be able to use it even if some extra chips were soldered on.
      I don't know much about the details of the XGA mod for the Clamshell, but you could always contact +Hrutkay Mods, who has done that mod to one of his machines.

    • @christopherwilliams9418
      @christopherwilliams9418 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      $175 sounds like a fair price considering all the work that goes into it! I can't afford that right now, (currently saving to buy a car) but sometime early next year I should be able to go through with it! I'll subscribe for now and try to keep this in mind, so I can come back once I've got the cash.
      Shame to hear the mod can't be done on an Indigo logic board, I'm assuming the pins on the CPU are different from the one on the original Clamshell board, and thus different to the ones on the G4 typically used to replace the original 750 G3?
      Re: Cooling mods, are there any upgrades that won't require any extra cooling that you know of?
      When I have the cash to send them out to you, I've got an early DUSB logic board I'd be more than willing to donate in the name of research, it uses the same processor family (750CX) as my ICS uses but it's clocked at 500 MHz whereas the highest 750CX offered in a Clamshell was 466 MHz.
      Sad to hear the GPU can't be upgraded, can they at least be swapped between Clamshell boards? (4MB VRAM original for 8MB VRAM Indigo/Key Lime/Graphite?) If so, combined with the addition of a firewire port that would at least bring the original board up to better spec than a 466 MHz SE Clamshell with the addition of the new CPU. Would it be a better idea to just overclock the 750CX on the Indigo's logic board? Could I get it to hit at least the 466 MHz of the Key Lime/Graphite SE models without it burning a hole through the casing? I've already pretty much ruled out trying to find the 466 SE board on my own, too rare and expensive or me. @~@;
      I''ll definitely give 'em a nudge! I know the cable you need comes usually in certain 466 SE iBooks, but there's gotta' be another way. XD
      Thanks a ton!

    • @dosdude1
      @dosdude1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the Indigo/Firewire boards have a completely different CPU than the original models, which isn't pin compatible with a G4.
      Any G4 upgrade will require cooling, unfortunately. The only slight mod that may not is maybe over clocking the CPU slightly to like 366 MHz instead of 300 just by changing the PLL resistor config, but the performance improvement would be negligible, and probably not worth it.
      For the XGA mod, if you don't have the correct cable, it's possible to modify the original, by soldering the wires to the correct pins of the XGA display.

      There is, but it has a different logic board and uses a 7455, not a 7410 like the original ones. The 7455 has a different pinout, and won't work on the Clamshell boards.
