Wherever You Are was realeased in 2010. Taka (vocalist) wrote it for a friend's wedding and when they released it (it wasn't a single!) it blew up in japan and is a popluar songs for weddings in Japan. Stand Out Fit In is a song Taka worte about living in the US as an asian man (he has a house in LA and lives there since 2016). The story is mostly in the music video, but the lyrics are talking about being yourself in general. The Beginning was released in 2012 as the theme song for a popular japanese movie and really put them on the map for a lot of international fans. If there is only one thing to know about One Ok Rock it's that live performances are better than studio versions. I would love to see you react to their live performances. In particular Clock Strikes (Live from Mighty Long Fall at Yokohama Stadium), Deeper Deeper Live from Mighty Long Fall at Yokohama Stadium), We Are (from Ambitions Japan Dome Tour 2018) and Take What You Want (from Ambitions Japan Dome Tour 2018). They have 10 albums out at this point and great diversity in their sound. Fun fact: Twenty One Pilots opened for One Ok Rock's Japan Tour in 2015 for 2 nights.

Some of my personal favourite lives are Mighty Long Fall, The Beginning, Take What You Want, and Deeper Deeper. You pointed out how the guitarist doesn't overpower the song. This is even more apparent in their lives. Each of them understand when to take focus and when to pull back for the sake of the song, enhanced and supported by amazing mixing and sound engineers.

You need to watch their live performances. Their music is made to be heard live. They are insane! Saw them 3 months ago and it was the best experience and concert!

forgot to mention: taka's vocal range and breath control are INSANE, his parents are also well-known singers in japan so it's kind of a family thing, but he just has a very unique charisma when singing :]

Not to complicate the wheel further, but I'd like to recommend the British post-punk band The Chameleons. They're from the 80s and their sound is master class, think along the lines of The Cure with a bit of Pink Floyd vibes.
Funny story is that one ok rock help twenty one pilots career by making them opening act for their 2015 world tour. That monster of a tour help cement twenty one pilots as an amazing live band

Ft Island would be a good Korean band to checkout. Their Korean music is more pop but their Japanese is more rock. The lead singer HongGi is friends with Taka the lead singer of One Ok Rock.
