  • A walk through Durham City Centre from Framwellgate Bridge to Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle and Durham University Buildings! Join us for this look around this historic North East English City. Also watch our video of Edinburgh - • EDINBURGH ROYAL MILE F...
The settlement was founded over the final resting place of St Cuthbert. Durham Cathedral was a centre of pilgrimage in medieval England. Durham Castle has been the home of Durham University since 1832. Both 11th-century buildings, the castle and cathedral were designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. It is the historic County Palatine of Durham's centre of governance. HM Prison Durham is also located close to the city centre and was built in 1816.
Durham is a city in northeast England, south of Newcastle upon Tyne. The River Wear loops around the Romanesque Durham Cathedral and Norman Durham Castle. North of the castle, 13th-century, medieval Crook Hall is home to gardens and a maze. South of the river, Durham University offers a Botanic Garden with woodland and tropical plants, and the Oriental Museum exhibiting Asian, Egyptian and Middle Eastern artefacts.
Durham is a city in the North-East of England and is well known for its Norman cathedral and 11th-century castle. Durham Cathedral is famous for being the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert and Saint Bede the Venerable, and the castle has been the home of Durham University since 1832.
Durham has a host of exciting attractions for a great day out. From award-winning museums to medieval castles, and from friendly family attractions to magnificent natural wonders.
In Durham City you can experience our amazing history and heritage as you marvel at the awe-inspiring Durham Cathedral.
Durham is a dream for those who love research and cutting-edge innovation. ... The university and research park attracts a lot of people and is part of the reason why they end up moving to Durham. The city is also home to many doctors and medical researchers as it's evolved into a global center for medicine.
The name “Durham” comes from the Old English word for hill, “Dun” and the Norse for island, “holme”. ... Taking this as a sign from Saint Cuthbert, the monks followed the milkmaid who guided them to a “wooded hill-island formed by a tight gorge-like meander of the River Wear”, Dun Holm.
Amongst the famous and notable people to come from Durham are former Prime Minister Tony Blair, TV presenter Matt Baker and Music producer Trevor Horn to name just three!

I did my PhD there from 2013 to 2016. Simply one of the most amazing places I ever visited. Durham is a city I now like to call my second home. The people there are very friendly and nice. I had a hard time understanding their accent at first, but they're awesome! I lived in Framwellgate Moor and walked all the way to the university every chance I got. My dad would stay at the Marriott Hotel every time he paid me a visit.
I see that some stores and cafes are not the same anymore. Sad. The Esquires cafe was the place I'd normally go to work on my thesis. Cafe Continental was the place I'd normally get my cheesecake fix from, and Cafe rouge was the place I'd frequent on my cheat day for a molten lava cake.
I miss Durham. I was planning on going back for a short visit, but the pandemic kept me from doing so.

Born and bred in Pity Me, two and a half miles North of, but within the City boundaries, I mis-spent a great deal of my youth in the many pubs there. Fond recollections of the Saturday night, Town Hall , Jazz Club and Dunelm House SU dances, the baths, the cinemas, Dimambro's cafe and hours just walking around the City. Thanks for the memories.

When I lived up near New Castle , we would go and visit Durham, a beautiful town. I enjoyed going to the market place, you could find anything you needed there. The beautiful windy streets with the slippery cobblestones pebbled everywhere. It was also gorgeous during the Holiday season I remember especially near the Christmas Market. Standing in the midst of it was like being in a Charles Dickens story of long ago. Thank you bringing me back to lovely memories :)

This made me feel really homesick. I left Durham straight after school when I joined the Army and have never lived there since, although I've visited obviously. I no longer live in England so I rarely get back home now, it's about 9 years since I was last in Durham and I still miss it. Best city in the world.

Went there with my son when he got admitted in Durham University for his Masters (fall session of 2018). Went back during Easter 2019 and again to attend the Winter Congregation 2020… I love the spectacularly beautiful city so much. Visited it again during my last trip to UK in October 2021. I remember sitting in the Market Square one sunny summer day. A couple were sitting next to me and the lady turned to me and said (in what might have been a Kentish accent) :
"Oo'd have thought that you could sit outside in the North?"
Bless her. I expect she was hoping to see polar-bears.

Yes, I studied here in the summer of 1972 with a Canadian university group. Lived in the newer residences and ate at the castle. Loved the Great Hall, library and the Undercroft. I returned there once for B and B and was the only one in a wing of the castle. I was awake most of the night with creaks and noises that seemed to fill the halls.

If any town planners out there need a practical example of how not to develop a medieval city centre, I simply suggest they visit Durham. Barely any buildings of note remain away from the peninsula or Silver Street. The city centre was indelibly scarred in the sixties by the Leazes road and Milburngate bridge development. No lessons were learned from this catastrophic error, which has been compounded by unsympathetic developments on both sides of the river. There are no viewpoints left downstream of Old Elvet bridge which are not marred by ugly steel framed constructions. For the last fifty years, the planners have prioritised modernisation and redevelopment over sympathetic refurbishment, with the city council and the university being the worst offenders. What a plethora of lost opportunities!

    • @winco68
      @winco68 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed. The City today although still beautiful is just a shadow of its former self. Between 1963 and 1976 it was systematically trashed in order to erect new buildings bridges and roads. So many historical buildings were lost it was criminal.
Today things would be done differently. A ring road could have helped. Local author Michael Richardson has produced a fine set of photographic books detailing life in the city before much of the demolition began. Well worth a look.

This made me research Tony Blair's history. Apparently, he was born in Edinburgh of Scottish parents. He moved to Adelaide, Australia as a baby when he father got a job lecturing at the university there. They returned to England when Blair was five. He lived in Durham as his father lectured at the university. He went to high school back in Edinburgh during term times but his family was based in Durham. He was MP for Sedgefield.
