Spoiler alert don’t read if you don’t want to be spoiled of the last few moments of ep 6. It gets weirder for Gao it seems to have been 8.7 years but for everyone else its 5 years... so yeah who knows what happens but it seems like Gao only remembers that they parted in high school not that he transferred the last term and they got togheter. Because in the last moments Gao says the earth turns around the sun and so on and gives away how many hours its been until they last meet and that is 8.7 years which of you add the 5 years that the show says has passed put them back in high school...

Which if you calculate 4 years of college and 5 years puts them back in high school. And in the beginning of the series its determined that they went to high school together and that Gao transferred last term of university too be with Zhou. So that’s makes me and a lot of others think that something happened in the states making Gao lose his memories so for him season 1 never happened. Or well he can’t recall it.
