You really should read the drivers manual - you are starting the bike the wrong way. To start the BMW F650CS you have to (after the temperature light goes off) press AND HOLD the start button for TWO SECONDS after the engine starts running. This has to do with the old motronic version of the electronic fuel injection you have in this bike.

Thanks for the advice, it’s just a hard habit to break. I’ve since sold the bike, but will keep servicing for the new owner.
