    fantastic video! just a quick thing about the exposure levels at base ISO; i noticed the same thing in my tests also, but then remembered that ISO is not a true standard of exposure (in the digital age) and that the baseline of what is "zero exposure" looks like, even at the same relative ISO value, actually varies a lot between camera to camera, manufacturer to manufacturer. that put my mind at ease! keep up the great vids man!

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Pat much appreciated! I just saw you posted a video on the S3 too, I will check it out now. Yeah that's a great point - I'm aware that digital ISO isn't a standard between manufacturers (eg Nikon's ISO 64 is much closer to Sony's ISO 100 than you would think), but I am surprised the different would be this much between two similarly aged Sony sensors - I need to do some more investigation I think!

  • @Florianski

    Hey i thought i would give a little insight on the printig stuff: the industry standard 300ppi is actually a bit misleading. Your typical offset printer press, which prints 60 lines per centimeter (standard high quality print), requires 225ppi. The 300ppi became standard so that the people creating the layout for magazines, books, flyers and so on have a little room to enlarge a photo whenever needed without running into resolution problems. Basically, if you print a picture at 225ppi you are good, anything above that wont make a difference (as long as your printer is set to 60 lines per centimeter).

    This is such a brilliantly simple video. I have been researching for weeks on end and nobody has done such a comprehensive review of the photo taking abilities of the A7S3 like you have my man 🤝
    This was so helpful you have no idea. I mainly use my current A7R3 for shooting TH-cam videos and a bit of event photography. I badly need 4K 60 for my videos and 12mp is I guess enough for the photography shots that I do as rarely are those printed (beyond A3).
    So, will be exchanging the A7R3 for the A7S3 now.
    Thank you once again.

      Also,is there any reason to wait for the A74? Will it offer anything superior to the A7S3 apart from probably more megapixels and a lower price,may be?

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I doubt it will be "superior" to the A7SIII (except for more megapixels), but I think it will probably adopt a few of its best features at a lower price. Things I'm hoping for are new menus (with touch control), "active" SteadyShot and 4K60p in video. I don't have any secret information here, these are just my guesses!!

    I’ve never printed an large format on any of my cameras. I’m upgrading from my R3 to the S3. I disliked dealing with the large files of my R3 and am so excited to go back down to a manageable 12mp. I have a high end computer so editing wasn’t as bad but storage was insanely problematic.

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that's a really sensible call - and this was my experience as well, it's kind of refreshing going back to such a fast workflow after so much time with the R4. I'm still going to use my R4 as my main stills camera, but I'm going to have 0 hesitation using the S3 for stills where resolution isn't needed. Thanks for the comment!

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah definitely, it's all about *actual* viewing distance when you're talking about whether the print is usable - put an A7SIII shot on a billboard and no one will notice from 100m away! Thanks for watching!

  • @hongk0ngfu3y
    @hongk0ngfu3y 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    there is still a ton more detail in the a7r4 shot even after youtube compression. A higher res image scaled down always looks better than the native capture lower res capture. Same reason the Canon r5's 8k to 4k scaling retains way more detail than a 4k capure alone.

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're 100% correct that the a7r4 retains more detail even when down-sampled to the same resolution as the a7s3. I'm not sure I agree that there's "a ton" more detail (everything's relative), but the difference is there when you crop in. Photographers who know their stuff and are used to pixel peeping are definitely going to see it, but looking at these 4K JPEGs myself, I'm confident the average person/client is really going to struggle to tell you which is which. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

    Hello! Great video! I found it while trying to solve hot pixels problem on my brand new A7S3 camera. It gives me a lot of hot pixels on ISO 5000+ and 0.8s shutter (so before LENR takes place). Sometimes I can see hot pixels clearly even on as short shutter as 1/200 (on high ISOs still). I just wanted to know if this is faulty and I should change the purchase at the shop while I still have time, or if this is normal for the model. My other cameras don’t have nearly so many hot pixels in the same conditions. I have explained my case in detail on dpreview, take a look if you can. Can’t post a link, just search in dpreview forum for “Is this OK for brand new a7S III? Photos are covered with colored dots (mostly white).” Thanks!

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey bud, I had a quick look at your thread and I must say that's not an issue I've investigated before. Do you have any examples of this being visible in standard everyday shots rather than dark frames? Dark frames will always show some noise due to the way that digital sensors work.
      I think of the hot pixel phenomenon only really occurring when the sensor gets very hot (obviously), so we're talking exposures of over 1 minute. What I think you're seeing is probably just standard sensor noise, but if it's visible in normal everyday shots (correctly exposed shots at around 80-400 ISO) then there might be a problem with your sensor. Alternatively, if your camera is overheating a lot (which shouldn't happen with the A7S3) then there might be a problem with the heat dissipation system. Good luck!

      I actually ran these tests but never did a video on it. The enhance details function in Lightroom/PS is like MAGIC for the a7siii. There is another niche of a niche of photography whose practitioners covet the SIII (and the SII before it)- aurora chasers. Unlike conventional astrophotography, aurora photography sometimes requires short shutter speeds-less than 5 sec. Still, it's nice to carry one camera for both night and day, so the A7S III looks like the one.

    I shoot both s and r too. I noticed that in post the s is much easier to work with virtually no noise. With my a7r4 I use a noise program and it’s less sharp due to the reduction. Check the photons to photo web site about all the s series cameras. Iso invariant from 2k-3k. I stop it down -2 and barely use to tripod anymore. As far as pixels are concerned, the new ai software (I use topaz ai) are good if you use them responsibly. Astro is a bit different because at the pixel level you need resolution for your stars as they look blocky for the s. Please don’t overlook the mark I and ii. Great value at a fraction the cost.

    Hey Dude, just one thing I noticed when watching your video:
    Your Ss are really sharp, you should maybe think about getting a de-esser (I don't know how it's spelled).

    Even with a 500 percent crop the difference even isn't that big. Also you can put the A7S3 image in photoshop as a smart object and basically scale it to fit any print sizes and even with a 20x30 print using this technique the results is not far off the A7RIV.

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will say that the 500% crop in the video doesn't do a great job showing the difference in detail - the A7RIV is definitely more detailed when you zoom into the full res image. Good point about the up-scaling, I haven't experimented much with that, but I've heard that up-scaling to your printer's native DPI can give you a bit of an image quality boost. I'll do another test and compare! Thanks for the comment!

      Hmm I think that just might be a subtle difference in editing or could also be the different polariser position cutting out more glare on the rocks. Honestly the RAW images looked so so so similar, really the only major difference was the resolution and the fact that the colour balance was a little different in camera (but easily fixed in post).

    I want ask you that now I have A7R IV but I want buy other cameras as second. But I'm undecided A7s II or A7s III. I need it to withstand the high ISO and above all to film the aurora borealis. Because I work in Iceland. I owned A7s but I sold it. And now I would like to have the S model back, but I'm undecided for this between II or III. Do you have any advice for me?
    Watching this video I marveled at the similarity of image quality and print between A7R IV and A7S III. Since a few months ago I was just evaluating also considering sale A7R IV for take A9 II.

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Luca - thanks for watching and for the comment! The A7s II was ground breaking when it came out, but that was 5 years ago now! To be honest it's quite far behind the A7s III in almost every respect: battery life, autofocus speed, autofocus tracking features (stills and video), ergonomics, customisation, in-body stabilisation, touchscreen, menus, buffer, memory card options (+dual card slots), colour science, view finder and monitor quality, flip out screen and, most significantly, video codecs and frame rates. You pay more for the A7s III but you get A LOT for your money in my opinion.
      Talking just about high-ISO performance they are actually pretty well matched BUT the better video formats (including RAW video!) available in the A7s III, means that you will be able to do more with your footage when editing and this will enable you to get a much better final product out of the A7s III. The A7s III is also breaking ground (just like the A7s II did), so it is a much better option to future proof your kit! Any other questions, let me know!
      P.S I can't wait to go to Iceland one day, but it's literally the other side of the planet from where I am right now >.

Now I wait a while, because in this period it is not possible to travel, so I take the opportunity to wait a while when they lower the price for the A7S III. :D

    12MP images has been the single biggest reason for me *NOT* keeping the mad money powder dry for another 6 mos or so to pickup the A7S. I desperately want this cam for its amazing video chops, but aside from the steep price of buying new into e mount, the stills resolution has given me pause vs. R5 or even R6 options. I have a great 12-yr old Nikon D700 that delivers 12MP, and does it well. If I spend this much I want to be happy in 4-5 years pulling high-resolution time lapses and images I can crop more aggressively.

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely reasonable! It is definitely a video camera first and all the arguments for why it might be a good option over the R5 and R6 really relate to it's professional video features and abilities. For mainly stills shooters, the question is much, much harder in my opinion and I can definitely see a lot of people viewing the R6 as a better value option for hybrid needs. Timelapse being a video format, I'm curious as to why you need more than 4K for that use? Obviously the heavy cropping argument makes complete sense, just curious about the timelapse issue.
