- #46: understanding the AMP1 custom controls! PLUS playing with an orchestra, Thomas Blug style: On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich look in detail at the Custom Controls on AMP1 Mercury Edition and Iridium Edition. What do the Custom Controls actually do? What was Thomas’s philosophy behind the concept? Why are the Classic settings different on the Mercury and Iridium amps? And how are the Custom Controls different from standard tone controls? We’ll answer all that and more, take your questions and Thomas will A/B the AMP1 Custom Controls against the tone control options on some other classic and modern amps!
Plus, Thomas shares his experiences on playing with a full orchestra, a feat he’s pulled off on numerous occasions now! We’ll be joined for this segment by Martin Hennecke, who’s a percussionist and member of the orchestra board for the Saarländisches Staatsorchester and member of the acclaimed Percussion Under Construction ensemble. So Martin also has first-hand of being in the orchestra and working directly with Thomas on these projects.
Together with Martin, we’ll discuss the behind the scenes work that goes into such a project, the unique challenges it brings, the various arrangements and instrumentations, and how it is for a rock guitarist to work in tandem with a conductor and the head of a classical orchestra! Don’t miss it!

I have watched maybe 50+ Amp1 videos at this point. This is my number 1 reference. Amazing illustrative video. My mercury edition arrives today. ❤🎉
Really interesting to hear the mutual respect between classical and rock musicians. Those of us who are self taught and don’t read music, are often in awe of the classical musicians who sight read music.
The improvisation skills of the rock musician and the classical guys are a perfect marriage.
My first live concert was Rodriguez guitar concerto, and the power of that full orchestra will stay with me forever.

Hi. On the silver I find that the vintage is way louder than the other channels even if I Max the volume on the on the classic and modern channels. Is that just post of the design of the original amp?
Try Classic Tone counterclockwise and Classic all the way up: that should be louder then vintage. If that’s not the case, maybe you need service. Contact service@bluguitar.com

On Yamaha Pacifica, they had really clever idea, they had two strat singlecoils on bridge, so when you split the "humbucker" it was true single coil.
I know... I would start with something like that for my journey...;-)

Yes! I always use the BluBOX...

@@zeppo20 Yes, its in another room not mic'd up so only hearing Blubox but it adds subtle feel/tone to the sound
The speaker is just a load- it’s not mic’ed up. I have showed the difference with no speaker connected and speaker connected just recently again- I believe in the episode before (AOT 45...maybe AOT 44)
@@BluGuitar I already got it, I like to mix the Blubox and then copy the track with another iR, for recording. I don't try it live yet.

Im using the original silver amp1 version and still trying to search my tone in the vintage section....i wanna achieve 70s rock tone. the clean, classic and modern were the easiest to get my sound and the sound im after but the vintage is the hardest...i try eq pedal in the front and still it doesn’t give me the tone i want. The more i dial the gain the more flubby and almost fuzz tone that i get. Gain on 3-4ish give the sound i want but its lack of gain. Is it normal?? Is there any defect on my amp1??? Or is it the nature of the vintage section??
Fyi, My gear mostly a humbucker guitar and a marshall v30 speaker silver jubilee cab.
And btw the tone control in the custom control for me its act as a “presence” control, so i can easily change to humbucker and single coil guitar
There’s no defect! That’s the character of this channel. Try gain with a lo setting and have the boost engaged-put it as hi as you need more gain. If you use the internal boost for some other purpose, try a boost pedal or an EQ pedal to boost and fine tune the frequencies to your liking/tightness
Tune that Low E!!
