And it came to me,as I watched, what the Geiko were about: it was the training and discipline in how to move, the costuming and makeup that creates a powerful persona. こないだお茶屋さんに入っていく舞妓さん見かけたんですけど玄関？お座敷？上がる時にすごい大変そうにしてる周りの方の声が聴こえて、ほんとにお着物って綺麗だけどほんとに大変なんだなあ……って再認識。

ive seen where some hangyoku (tokyo equivalent of a maiko) use their own hair while others use wigs like this^ and i find it really lovely when they don't use wigs. this outfit doesn't look as heavy as the kyoto maiko one. BUT it's still just as beautiful.

Edie &Andy she appears to be a Maiko, as she as decorations in her hair, does not wear a wig, has red in her collar rather than the white collar of a Geiko and her obi is worn high under her arms.
Dennis Vance maiko are from Kyoto. This is a Tokyo geisha. The apprentice geisha in Tokyo are called “hangyoku” not “maiko” You’ll notice her hair style is completely different from the style worn by a maiko from Kyoto, as is her obi. Her kimono is different as well. Maiko in Kyoto wear hikizuri kimono which is a lot longer than the kimono the geisha in this video is wearing. Her kimono doesn’t even reach the floor.

steve gale the only times I’ve seen Kyoto maiko in short kimono is during the summer festivals (when they aren’t dressed nearly as formally as the geisha here) and when they’re on their days off/before going to work. She’s not a maiko, maiko only work in Kyoto and she works in Tokyo. They call apprentice geisha “hangyoku” in Tokyo.

@@Ranger0463 Dress is a generic term. Its correct usage, could've also called it garment or simply fabric, and those too would be correct. But we are glad that at age 12 you know that's a kimono.

This is only the half of it. She had to dress in the underwear, the body padding (to make the cylindrical body shape) and arrange the length and wrap of the kimono itself. Don't forget the under collar and the over the underwear layer in a complimentary color that shows when she walks. The obi folding is the fun part.

現在、千葉は柏在住の八王子生まれ６１歳大学時代（’８１年まで）は、芸者衆の出入りする料亭でウェイトレスのバイトをしていたこともあります。当時の八王子芸者さんたちは、ゲッ！！高齢者が圧倒的多数でしたが、今お若い方々が増え、マスコミの注目度もアップして嬉しいです。これからも芸道、それからSNS, youtube駆使して業界の発展に尽くしてください。

Its a Yanoji musubi. A tipe of musubi for hanhaba,fukuro,maru and darari obi.

Thanks for the nice video. I have a question: why do the Maikos wear Ofurisode instead of Hikizuri and have different Obi musubi instead of Darari Obi?
In exclusive days like matsuris or hassaku,they wear different musubis.
These aren’t maiko. Maiko only live and work in Kyoto. The geisha in Tokyo have their own traditions.
Kein Herz アニ they *do* have a different name in Tokyo. In Tokyo they’re called hangyoku 半玉. In Kyoto they’re called maiko 舞子 or 舞妓. Geiko 芸子 is also a Kyoto word. In Tokyo iirc they use geisha 芸者 or maybe it’s geigi 芸妓, I cant remember.
Yes, they practice the same profession generally speaking but they call themselves different things.
Kein Herz アニ well yeah. Their basic job function/description is the same, they both entertain at ozashiki with traditional dance. There’s a lot of subtle differences tho. As you can see in this video Tokyo geisha and their apprentices don’t wear hikizuri. The apprentices don’t wear darari obi like the apprentices in Kyoto do. Their hairstyle and kanzashi are slightly different too. The Tokyo geisha don’t have the same repertoire of dances as the ones in Kyoto. I don’t know a whole lot about the Tokyo geisha (information on the Kyoto practitioners is a lot easier to find, at least in English) so I don’t even know if they do kyo-mai style dances at all tbh. So yeah, same thing with subtle and not so subtle differences.

京都で芸者になりたい！と言うことでしたら、中学卒業頃から置屋でまずは仕込みさんとして過ごさねばなりません。そこから一年お稽古を積んで舞妓を経て芸者になります。
そもそも仕込みさんになるにも面接が必要ですし、舞妓さんになる前にリタイアする人もいらっしゃるそうです。そこから芸妓さんになれるのも一握りらしいです。
とても格式高い厳しい世界です。
東京で、と言うことでしたら京都ほど年齢に制限はありませんが、矢張り若い方が良いのは確かです。履歴書を送るだったり面接をするなど、ネットでも募集がかかっていますので、調べてみては如何でしょう？
それでも敷居が高いというのは確かですので、覚悟を決めていかれると宜しいかと。
勿論、京都や東京以外にも舞妓さん芸者さんがいらっしゃるところはありますので、そちらを探してみても良いかもしれません。
外国の方が芸者に、というのは聞かない話ではありますが、今は昔よりも門は開かれているはずです。一度尋ねてみてはいかがでしょうか？
偏見や、伝統もありそれはちょっと…ということもあるとは思いますが、行ってみないことには分かりません。
それは無理だというのでしたら、衣装だけでもなりきり体験とかありますので、そちらはどうでしょう？

祇園甲部だけじゃなくて宮河町も男衆さんいてはりますよ。
I recall hearing that only men could tie obis because they were so heavy and cumbersome. Either they are making Obis lighter than they use to or the "only men can do it" claim was just a belief to feed a man's ego.
Not when it comes to these types of obi; they're relatively light and easier to tie. What you're most likely thinking about is the obi Kyoto maiko wear, the darari obi, which are still tied by men - usually just one man whose job is specifically to go to okiya and tie all the maikos' obi when it's time to head out for the evening - because of how long and heavy they are. From what I remember, darari obi can be up to 20 feet (600 cm) long. Hangyoku usually wear other types of obi tied into different kinds of knots, depending on the region, seniority, or occasion, but never the darari.

Beautiful fabric's a lot of attention to detail...where would you where this type of dress..witch occasion.
So this is a Hangyouku, so she would wear this for her performances, but the layout of the main aspects of the patterning goes along with a houmongi and the sleeves make it a furisode which is the highest formality an unmarried woman can wear, it has the extra glitz of the smaller patterns being throughout, but the main focuses are placed where houmongi patterns would be placed. Houmongi are traditionally semi-formal attire worn for visiting and being guests of special occasions (Think the guest of a wedding). So taking those into consideration, Furisode with Houmongi placement, this would be an extremely formal kimono, what would probably make it more formal is if it had a black base and the inclusion of Mon (Family crests)

盆踊りということは浴衣に半幅帯で、貝の口か矢の字結びかと思われます。
そんな難しいものじゃないですよ。結び方の動画もありますし。道具も帯締めだけあれば十分ですし。レッツトライ！

I've noticed that there is two different sleeve lengths on the kimono and I wondered if somehow they were adjustable?
They are not adjustable. Younger girls or in this case apprentice geisha wear longer sleeves than older women/married women/geisha

野原ひまわり ちゃんとした所はトイレは制限されてるから、着付けを脱ぐまではトイレに行ってはダメって感じですかね。舞妓や芸者の仕事は今でも厳しいようで、大変だけどやりがいがあるんでしょうね。
振り袖で御手洗い行く際は一枚ずつ開いて開いてして、また同じ順番で元に戻したら大丈夫ですけど、帯がだらり帯だったら大変そうですね😂💦

Digan me ignorante o lo que quieran pero yo vi un documental y ahí decían que las Geishas verdaderas no tenían ese tipo de moño en la espalda y que tampoco llevaba arreglos tan cargados en el cabello, que habían otras mujeres que se hacían pasar por ellas y que eso las desprestigiaba, lo que no sé es si ellas si sean las verdaderas, porque también las auténticas eran muy reservadas y discretas con dejar que los demás conozcan este tipo de cosas sobre su oficio :/
Mariana Yomi Esas de las que tú hablas llevan el "mono" en la parte delantera y efectivamente no eran geishas si no más bien prostitutas de alto nivel. Se llaman Oiran. Las geishas efectivamente son más discretas pero las que ves en este video arreglándose son Maikos, no geishas. Las Maikos son aprendices de geisha y suelen ir muy recargadas en cuanto a atuendos, accesorios y maquillaje. Las geishas, que es como de llaman cuando ya han terminado su entrenamiento, ya no utilizan el tan popular maquillaje blanco, usan peinados mucho más sencillos y kimonos más ligeros. Creo que la mujer que está ayudando a la joven Maiko a vestirse es una geisha. Espero haber aclarado tu duda aunque sea un poco! :)

4 years u are a maiko to learn the craft. they have more pink in their makeup, their own hair, and a longer sash on their obi. the geisha/geiko is the graduated adult version. they were more black makeup, were a wig and dont have a long sash on their obi and wear less hair ornaments. u can be a geiko for unlimited time until u go out of the system or get married.

Is it allowed for non-Japanese to wear the dress and do this makeup?
People in Japan are really supportive of foreigners wearing kimono regardless of Formality (As long as you're adhering to the formality of the occasion, for example, don't wear a Yukata to a wedding), though it would be extremely strange to walk around in Oshiroi (the white makeup). There are studios called Henshin studios which will dress people up, regardless of their nationality, race, age, or even gender, in different traditional looks including Geisha and Maiko and let them walk around the area to take pictures before returning to the studio again. It also might interest you to know that there have been foreign Geisha in the past. The most recent example would be ex-Geisha Kimicho-san who was an American practicing in Tokyo ^^
