The real history behind Cinco de Mayo and the importance of May 5th

  • Every year thousands of Americans crowd intro their favorite bars and restaurants for Cinco de Mayo. Many use it as the prefect excuse to go out for a drink or favorite Mexican meal, but the majority don’t know the real history behind Cinco de Mayo.
“It’s not Cinco de drinko, that’s off the table and it’s also not Mexican Independence Day," said Gerardo Rios, a professor of Mexican American studies and history at Southwestern College.
Rios explains why the fifth of May is an important date in Mexican history.
“What Cinco de Mayo celebrates is the Mexican liberal victory over the French forces that had invaded Mexico," said Rios.
In 1862, a powerful French army led by Napoleon III was sent to invade the country, and even though they outnumbered the Mexican army, they were met with a strong resistance in the Mexican state of Puebla.

As a Mexican I have always wondered why 5 de Mayo it’s so big in the USA, when, as a country, we don’t even celebrate it. No one here celebrates it, except Puebla.
We all here might know the commemorative day, exactly as “5 de Mayo, día de la batalla de Puebla” (day of the battle of Puebla).
So I appreciate educative videos like this 😅 as I have encountered people congratulating me for our “independence” 😂

He forgot to mention the French were allied to the confederate army. Once the French lost the port in Puebla, it weakened the confederacy and allowed the Union to claim victory in the American civil war. That’s why we celebrate it in the states.

Bro, Puebla is not a port. It is in inland Mexico. Moreover, the French under Napoleon III flirted with the idea of aligning themselves with the Confederacy, but never could. Once Maximilian became Emperor of Mexico in 1864, he became a liberal monarch. The Mexican people finally rid themselves of French rule in 1867, two years after the US Civil War.

The Gringos celebrate May 5 because Mexico won the Battle of Puebla, defeating the French Army, and they celebrate it for the simple reason that if the French army won, the USA would have a Neighboring Power!! and USA Obviously does not want Mexico to be a power!!! If so, it would dispute the territories stolen by the USA. THAT'S WHY GRINGOS CELEBRATE MAY 5.

I understand Mexicans want to celebrate like gringos but really this is not that big of an event. The battle was won by Mexicans but the French just sent a larger force that took over Mexico city. It wasn't until the United States became involved and provided arms and support that France was forced out. Without the US aid, the Mexicans would have lost.

@@gustavoperez5480 Nice try BUT history says different. Mexico had nothing to fight with but the USA had lots of post civil war military equipment and we wanted europeans out of the western hemisphere. It was in our best interest to provide this aid, which we did. Mexico got the French out and the gringos (the USA) kept the Europeans out of our business of dominating the Americas. It was a win win situation. Be glad that it was that way, because the Mexicans have a bad habit of losing wars with the USA.
