  • The U-2 spy plane is an engineering marvel, but it can't land on its own. This is the complicated process pilots have to go through to bring the plane down safely.

      I have been driving faster than this on a highway. It's not that sacry when you are used to it and keep enough distance to other drivers.
      But on a runway there is plenty of space and nobody can pull in front of you, so no wonder that he is so relaxed ;)

      When the camera was inside the chase car he was only going like 20mph, if he was going at 140mph it would sorta be a hazard for a camera crew unless it was just a gopro mounted on the back of the car. But in this video he was only going 20mph, never was the camera inside when he was driving 140mph chasing the plane

    for the people wondering "why don't they just stick another pair of landing gear on the wings?!" this is because, at 70,000ft the air is very very thin. this means to fly stably you have to be going very fast, which means burning a lot of fuel. so the wings are entirely dedicated to storing fuel. hope this cleared it up for people :p

    To all the guys who are saying that this is a shitty design or that it's crasy to land like this you are wrong (at least in my opinion ).
    This aircraft was design to fly at high altitude and, to be able to reach height like this you need to save weight.
    Moreover this design is used a lot on gliders because it's lighter and doesn't create huge risk at landing. The only thing you can have is small damages on the skids below the wing. The car following the aircraft at landing (increase a bit the safety) but is mainly there to put the temporary wheels under the wing to move the aircraft from the runway.

      At my glider club we just land on grass. So no damage.

    • @basilebourgeois9891
      @basilebourgeois9891 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ebenezer Nibi Yes true, most of the gliders are landing grass runway. I suppose that they have to replace the skids more often because of the wear.

    • @KJK9029
      @KJK9029 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The chase car is there to use a radio to give exact altitude readings to the pilot that is flying due to him not being able to see over the top of the planes nose.

    • @KJK9029
      @KJK9029 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ebenezer Nibi The plane can't land at a grass strip because of the nature of the plane, it already doesn't like to slow down so it needs a lot of runway and it needs the friction of being on a paved runway to help it slow down. If it landed on a 10,000 foot grass runway each time it landed it would more than likely tear up the ground and make it unusable. The skids are made of titanium so they probably don't need to be replace all that often and anyways this is the military we're talking about, replacing skids every so often is likely much less expensive than any other options they had.

    I once had the pleasure of riding in the chase car when they did the landing. It was the most bizarre landing procedure I'd ever witnessed. The reason for the chase car is because the pilot basically has to stall the plane to land, and if it's more than a foot off the ground when they stall it, the plane will bounce right off the runway. So the chase car sits there on the side of the runway (it's an automatic transmission bc you don't want to mess with a stick in this situation), and as the plane is coming in, they gun it. Then the plane overtakes you, the chase car gets in behind the plane and while the pilot on the ground is keeping the pedal to the floor, he's talking on the radio calling out the height from the ground to the pilot in the air. As soon as the U2 is less than a foot off the ground, the pilot on the ground says "stall," and the pilot in the air does exactly that.
    This all happens in a matter of seconds. Then you get to watch the bizarre picture shown here of the plane slowly balancing down the runway on its bicycle wheels until it comes to a stop and one of its wings drops down, then the crew chiefs reattach the pogos so they can taxi the plane back into the hangar.
    It really is quite the site to see. It's such an amazing throwback to the era of experimental aircraft design, where they were slapping stuff together that had no right to fly.

    • @pjcsmo
      @pjcsmo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A good description: I also have had this shotgun seat for a night time landing at RAF Alconbury many years ago. It was twilight when the plane showed up - a little later than the pilots prefer, but right on schedule per the mission plan my ground systems had produced and upladed to the aircraft before takeoff. It was pretty much dark when we were finally back at the hangar.
      We were riding in a new Mustang SVO (read highway patrol) and the pilot driving the car for the first time lost control for a moment, making for a very fast ride catching up with the jet.
      This U-2 pilot (the one in the plane) wanted to show off, however, so did not come to a stop after landing. Instead he managed to bicycle the rather massive plane all the way to the hangar before coming to a stop and finally letting the wingtip come down. So there was a parade: the bicycling U-2 followed by the Mustang followed by the pickup with the pogo crew on board.
      I have since tried to imagine the combination of control surface and throttle adjustments that it must have taken to taxi that far, without much success.

  • @dersebbler9452

    Ok so a few infos for all the people commenting all sorts of stuff about the U-2.
    1. They left out the fixed gear in the wings for weight savings. At 70000 feet the air is so thin that the pilot has to keep the U-2 in a Window of a few knots between staling and overspeeding the airplane. So any more weight and the 70000 feet wouldn't have been possible.
    2. The chase car isn't just there for the extra wheels. The driver (also a U-2 Pilot) is telling the U-2 the height above ground via Radio. Beause of the weight savings the landing gear is somewhat fragile, so they can only flare and let it drop from a low height otherwise they risk that the landing gear rips into the fuelselage.
    3. Landing the U-2 also isn't easy because it glides so well. Similar as flying at altitude, a few knots difference in speed is all it takes to go from landing to overshooting the runway. Speed and height are very critical when it comes to landing.
    4. The pilot needs to hold the U-2 basially level during landing, because of the fuel in the wings. If he rolls it over just a bit it becomes very hard to correct it since the fuel starts to move in the wingtips. This effect is a bit lessened by baffles but not by much.
    If anyone is interested search for "c.w.lemoine interview U-2" he interviewed a u-2 pilot. Its a series of 5 videos about the live of a Pilot who also flew the SR-71 Blackbird, can highly recommend!

      Christopher Baker do you realize how precisely and perfectly balanced this aircraft is? I imagine they couldn't fit two extra wheels without messing up the balance, aerodynamics, maximum weight, ect. Given how much money went into this project, don't you think they would have thought of everything? and yes, it's going to be some absurdly high amount of money. That's how our modern military works. Everything is expensive.

      Having two extra wheels could weigh down the plane or decrease aerodynamics, making it slower or not able to fly as high

      Nick Saxon to put a landing gear, would change the aerodynamics
      To add a retractable Landing gear in the wings, would either require there to be less fuel, or to change the wing design to accommodate retractable Landing gear
      Changing the wing shape, changes aerodynamics, changing the weight changes the performance

    I know why the U2 essentially replaced (more outlived) the SR71 because of the sheer amount of operating costs which is also why the RQ drone still hasn’t replaced the U2 but let’s be real, not only did the SR71 have a full set of landing gear and it was never shot down but it just looks so much more badass. Badassery on something that works and uses sonic booms as literal trash talk just hits way more different.

    I love all the people in the comments saying "This is stupid, why don't they just add two more wheels, this thing can't even support itself hurr durr." It's built like that for a reason, the air at the altitude it flies at is ridiculously thin, therefore it needs to be rather fast to stay afloat. That means burning shit tons of fuel. The wings are basically doubling as gas tanks, two more wheels means less fuel, which means less range it can operate effectively without falling out of the sky. Adding two more wheels would make the plane worse at its job and it lands fine as is so why make it worse?
