Rubber Band Powered Car without Hot Glue

  • Joshua Houser asked what he could use instead of Hot Glue to make my Rubber Band Powered Cars. This car is made using contact adhesive or 'general purpose adhesive' as it says on the label. The main reason I use hot glue is speed and there are virtually no unpleasant fumes to deal with. This video has no 'speeded up' bits to emphasise the time it takes to make using the contact adhesive.

    Personally, contact glue do not use too much.
    I usually use it to leather or rubber.
    Never follow the method shown me in the bottle. Just stick it with a generous amount and let it dry under a weight or better yet, pressing any press or vise.
    Greetings!

      Contact glue never seems to work for me and it smells and takes too long to dry, I prefer the hot glue gun, it suits the sort of projects I do, quick and easy. I took great care today to follow the instructions and I have to admit it did work but it still took much longer than normal.

    Yes, sort of, only the car has to start about half a meter away from the mass and has to clear the mass out of a square that's about a meter by a meter (long and wide). The car has to push various masses (100g to 500g) out of the square, but start outside of the square, about half a meter away. It's clearing the field of masses.

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a running start from outside the square it should do better than from a standing start, but I have just watched my video again and see this pushes the 500 gm mass over 3 metres from a standing start so clearing a 1 metre square should be easy. The main issue is getting power to the axle and enough grip at the back wheels and that is a combination of the width of the tyres and enough weight over the axle to help the wheels stay in contact with the ground.

    Hey! Do you think there is anyway you could make a rubber band powered car that is about 20 inches long (has to be less than 25 inches long) and is able to push 500g masses out of the way (highest mass is 500 grams). It is for a project and I'm really stuck!
    Thank you grandad!

    By the way, you can use anything to make it, there are no restrictions, but try and make it relatively simple (as in not too complicated in terms of the way that it's built and how long it takes, not the materials and the materials have free reign)

      Hi Shar, is this the sort of thing you mean?
      Rubber Band Powered Car #8 pushes 500g
      For the original build you will have to go to the beginning of this playlist as I built this car to answer lots of questions so it is made to be easily modifiable.

    what if you have no bottle caps? what can you use instead or can you just not use them?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Annaliese, you just need something that will fill the gap in the middle of the CD, and allow you to fit your axle. Surely you can think of something to use? Cardboard, plastic, wood, I have even seen somebody fill the centre with hot glue. I use bottle caps because there are always plenty available, they don't even need to be the same size. I usually use matching caps because they look neater but it is not necessary.

    • @annaliesepiper6780
      @annaliesepiper6780 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I used your simple rubber band car but I used CDs for the wheels, I used scraps of cardboard that I made the same size as the pencil and hot-glued it onto the cd. Thanks for the help!

    Can you build the car without the peg to tie the rubber band?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +thiliepan prakalathan yes. Do you mean the peg on the axle? If that is the one, you just wrap the band round the axle so it traps itself under the wraps and it will hold itself in place. If you mean the paperclip at the front of the car you could just cut a slot in the cardboard to hook the band in place.

    how many rubber bands used

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As many as you like. I just use random cheap rubber bands. If you have a project that specifies a certain number of bands I expect they also specify what type of rubber band you can use. Looking at the pictures near the end of this video I can count seven. I have hundreds of rubber band powered car videos on my channel using all different numbers of bands. There are links in my video description. Here is one that looks the same but only uses one band Rubber Band Powered Car 1 x size 64 - full length video th-cam.com/video/pIO3FiHX4Oc/w-d-xo.html

    Could u put to zip ties instead of the paper clip ? (ASAP)

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean the paperclip I used at the front of the car to anchor the rubber band then YES I am sure you could. Maybe the easiest option is to push a hole through the cardboard at that point, push the band through the hole and use a piece of bbq skewer through the loop to stop it slipping back through the hole. Another method I use is to cut a slot there instead. I show you that in this video th-cam.com/video/4N7CK5t-hP0/w-d-xo.html

      Hi Madhav, I know this is not exactly what you mean but it is the general principle. I think I might have a fairly small car that I can convert in my grandchildren's toy box. I will have a look. Charity Shop Gold or Garbage #24 cheap tractor to rubber band power

    How big does my cardboard needs to be?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The width needs to be right to allow you to fit your wheels on the axles without rubbing the chassis, so the width depends on how long your axles are. The length can be as long as you want. The longer it is, the longer the length of rubber bands you can use and the farther it will go. Make the dimensions fit whatever you have available to make the car. That's what I do.
      I would guess my cardboard is about 12 inches long and 6 inches wide.

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could make the straw tubes by wrapping paper round a pencil and gluing it or taping it. The barbecue skewers or bamboo canes are available in Poundland and many other stores, especially this time of year when people are having barbecues. While you are there you could buy some straws. You can get similar bamboo canes in garden centres. Or you could use pencils or bicycle spokes. You make have to use your initiative and think for yourself.
