Rubber Band Powered Car 4 toothpicks 2 Straws 4 Bottle Caps

- Riley Elwood asked "can you make a rubber band powered car out of 4 toothpicks 2 straws and 4 bottle caps". The video is virtually real time with no fast forward sections so the total build time was only about 15 minutes.
I have a separate channel focused on rubber band power - Put a rubber band on it bit.ly/2T3OF4j
The back toothpick simply has a very short piece of toothpick glued to it so it forms a hook to hold the band as you turn the axle.
Measurements: How long is your straw? You need holes for the axles to go through, they need to be the same position on both straws or the car will not go straight. You need holes in both straws for the cross-members to go through, they need to be the same position on both straws or the car chassis will not be straight. Other than that you can put the holes anywhere you like on the straws. Probably as near to the end of the straw as you dare without weakening the straw. If you watch the video carefully you can see I am using a ruler that is marked in centimetres and it looks like I am probably marking the holes about one centimetre from the end and then the next hole about one centimetre from that.
Making the holes might be an issue. Melting the plastic is better than trying to drill it or push a sharp spike through but it can be done. Using a hot wire or soldering iron may be a safety problem but you get a stronger hole. In the straws it is important that the holes for the cross members are a tight fit and the holes for the axles are very loose. The holes in the wheels need to be a very tight fit.
"Does adding the clay make the car move further? If so, what is the science behind it?"
The answer was already explained in the video. The car was too light so the wheels lacked grip and slipped on the floor, spinning round without moving forwards. Adding the clay to the wheels made them heavier so they had more grip, stopping them slipping, so they could drive the car forwards.
The science is about friction.
Main components
4 toothpicks
2 drinking straws
4 bottle caps
rubber bands or loom bands
hot glue
Modelling Clay for extra weight
Main Tools
Bradawl
Hot Glue Gun - If you get the relevant holes nice and tight you don't need hot glue but I like to use it.
Soldering iron - At 03:45 I explain I am using my soldering iron to melt the holes. You could just use a sharp nail or a drill but using the soldering iron means there is no chance of the plastic splitting, you need a steady hand to do it.
Snowman plays247 asked "What other types of materials can you use other than straws?". I have split the reply video over 4 episodes and placed it in it's own playlist. • RBPC for Snowman plays247

GrandadIsAnOldMan What measurement did you use to measure the straws?
snowman plays247 it doesn't really matter as long as you use the same measurements on both straws so the axles are parallel. Watching the video I can see that I used a rule marked in centimeters and I marked 2 spots from each end at 1 centimeter and 2 centimeters.
ok thanks so much:)
GrandadIsAnOldMan what bottle caps did you use because I have tried some lego circles and it doesn't work because of too much resistence? What bottle caps did you use for your wheels?
snowman plays247 does it make any difference which sort of bottle caps I used? Just find some plastic bottle caps that match each other as they need to be the same size. When you say the Lego circles had too much resistance, what did you mean? Are they rubbing against the sides of the car or they just too big? I don't know what Lego circles are.
Till this day he still hearts comments and responds to them. What a legend!
This is my most popular video and gives me regular comments. If you have a look you will find I have well over 8000 videos on this channel and three other channels to manage, so answering comments is part of the deal with running a TH-cam channel.
anyone else have to watch this for quatrintine school
Make sure you check the video description for more information 😁👍

The car really extended it's distance with the clay. Better than I anticipated, the flywheel effect works well. I have to grandsons and I'm sure the would enjoy building these machines. Again, Thanks.
my project required t to stop in between 3 and 5 meters. mines is better
Hey , i would just like to thank you for making these kinds of videos , your videos helped me and my friends built a rubber band powered car that can go 15 m , and we won a competition.Without your videos , we wouldnt be able to achieve this.
Love from Pakistan ;)
+rashad reyaz thank you so much, that is great to get positive feedback. Congratulations on your success and thank you for letting me know.
Thanks! I’m doing a science project where we build a pencil car and I’m using this as help.
Good luck. You will find some helpful information and links in my video description

Just found this channel, it's sooo peaceful! I love it! No music, just peace.....
I used to watch these videos when i was like 5 up to when i was 8 like 5 or 6 years ago, been looking for this channel for months and just found it, brings back aton of memories
Well thanks for looking me up again, I probably cover different subjects although I do still do the occasional rubber band car - I even have a separate channel for rubber band stuff

Wow,
I wish more poor children, parents and teachers would have access to such ideas !
When you wrap some rubber bands around the wheels you will have better grip also on
slippery ground.
When you connect the straws at the rear sidewith a thick nail instead of the wood you can increase grip acceleration further..
Little customised toy car ;-)
Thank you. I keep my designs simple so that people can copy them and improve them if they wish.
you have some really neat contraptions. young'ins love doing this type of things. keep up the good work. Thanks
Sweet grammar
This is very cool; I thank-you for sharing this. I'm a grandpa with four grandsons, ages 10, 6, 6, and 2: I love this kind of stuff to make for their enjoyment.
Hey thanks Larry, you will find some useful hints and tips and links in the video description. Although this particular video is the most popular on my channel it is certainly not the best rubber band powered car I have built and certainly not the easiest even though at first glance it looks simple.
Used this as an idea for a school project and got great marks! Hope you have a lovely day/night
Thank you! Glad to hear you did well. This is my most popular video. I think many teachers use it as a convenient project to set their pupils.
I was not able to see how you tied the bands with the car and it somehow seems like there was something used to attached the bands at the back toothpick.
Thank you SO much for this tutorial! Really saved my a** on a project.
That is great news, congratulations and thanks for letting me know.

@@GrandadIsAnOldMan of course of course you mustn’t reveal your secrets to the general public Henry Ford will have you ‘whacked’ no doubt 😉
Thank You for helping us with our project!
pretty cool. the added clay also acted like a flywheel
When you said fly wheels I expected it to fly😂
should've changed the camera angles when you were putting those rubber bands on the front part.Kinda had trouble keeping up there for a sec.
thanks for the demonstration tho.
👍
It peeled out! You hot Rod!!!
😊
Hey just did this project for my kids science project. Great video but being me I made it even better . Here is 2 tips I will give you . I used Gatorade caps and no clay. I put thick rubber bands on the wheels it gave it great traction. Hope this helps all .
FYI read his description the toothpick in back you half to build a toothpick peg on the middle of the rear axle. Also I didn't connect rubber band to front wheels, that restricted it a little. Rubber band is tied to the toothpick that acts as the brace for straws. Good luck
Thank you for adding this comment 😁👍
congratulations on your inventions, I am also passionate about robotics !

What a weird comment
You are my hero! I'm going to make these with my grade 7 physical science students! Thanks!
Good luck with that. From the feedback I have received some people manage with no trouble and some struggle. The holes in the wheels need to be a very tight fit.
paced enough to watch and do project with him
Love your channel. You could also make grippy "tires" for your bottlecap wheels by cutting a wide rubber band out of an old bicycle inner tube.
Hi ercost60. Yes you could make grippy tyres. It just depends what components are on the list for your project. I often cut rubber balloons or rubber gloves into strips to use as tyres for my projects as I usually use CDs for wheels.
You should make the front wheels turn a bit so when you release it, it does doughnuts :D great channel, subscribed :)
If you just leave the clay out of the wheels it will spin round anyway.
amazing ★
GrandadIsAnOldMan I'm doing that
it's pretty amazing that you manage to get a fully functional car from just a small amount of things
this channel is one of the few really decent howto channels on TH-cam
hope you keep at it☺
Thank you very much. Not all my projects are successful but even the not so good are probably worth watching so you can work out where I went wrong and make your own improvements to do better.
This is really neat. Great job.
Thank you, it is a very popular video on my channel.
Excelente. Saludos desde Argentina.
+matemática, espíritu y arte hey thank you, greetings from the UK.
GrandadIsAnOldMan Felices Fiestas y Mucha suerte para el 2016.
I love it
I really love these. Gonna have to make one
Good luck. It is very light weight, so it needs the weight in the wheels to hold it on the road 👍
IT WORKED, I GOT THE 🥈 HIGHEST GRADE . I GOT AN A THANK YOU SO MUCH
Hey that is brilliant. It is not as easy to build as it looks at first.
How many ft did it drive? I’m looking for one that can drive 20ft and over
How do you actually tie all those rubber bands together?!?!?
If you read the video description you would have found this text.

Thank you for watching
I remember watching this years ago it's nostalgic
It is still my most popular video because kids are given it as a school project.
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan precicely!
Amazing difference when you added weight to the wheels. Good video.
Thanks, the extra weight helped the grip and also gave it momentum so it carried on after the bands had finished.
cool
awesome

You can put one or more rubber bands over the bottle caps to increase the friction !
Yes you can, it just depends what you are allowed to use in your project specification.
how did u put rubber band on tutpick

Hi Damia, good luck with your project 👍
How would you make a rubber band powered car that travels in a linear direction and returns to the position it was launched from? I was thinking adding another toothpick to the other axle so the energy could transfer back causing the car to travel in the reverse direction. Would this work? Thoughts?
+Jason Meza it depends how accurate you need to be. It is incredibly simple to achieve if you don't need it to be perfect, but if you need accuracy then it becomes very difficult. Here is one that does more than just forwards backwards th-cam.com/video/ILvqa8Id4Rc/w-d-xo.html

Is there another way than using the sought ring tool because I don't have special tolls like that?
You can just use a sharp nail or piece of wire but it might split the plastic. You could heat the nail so it melts the plastic which stops it splitting if you can find a way to hold the nail without burning your fingers.
I FINALLY FOUND YOUR CHANNEL AGAIN!! :D! THIS TIME IM SUBSCRIBING!

going to try this with my students. thanks
+LeapingFrog Lady good luck with that :)
We are still working on them. We only did half of it. I hope to get finished with them on Thurs.
LeapingFrog Lady your main problem will be the lack of grip and the wheels spinning. That is why it will need the clay in the back wheels. You may also like to try wrapping rubber bands round the wheels for extra grip.
This actually made me sleepy... But thanks Grandad! I now have a physics toy WOHOOOO
People complain when I make videos too fast and people complain when I make them too slow.
Thanks !!! I will totally have a 100 in my project 😆😆😆
Good luck with that, this one can be surprisingly difficult to get right.
this tutorial is really COOL!!!!!
Thanks, it was never intended as a tutorial but I believe it is a popular video used by some teachers as a school project. There is some helpful information in the video description.
Legend such a nice guy
Thank you
Couple of those rubber bands on each of the back wheels would add a little traction
The trouble with rubber bands round the wheels is they quickly come loose. Another option is to cut a small balloon into strips wide enough to span across the wheel and overlap a bit each side. That holds it in place.
Quick question, If the bottle caps are slightly different will it affect the speed
Probably not enough for you to notice. The smaller the wheels are, the harder it will be to stop them spinning and losing grip. If they are different sizes left to right, then it is unlikely you will be able to make the car go straight.
wow really help ful for my project..tq
Thank you
