I love this style of video with no talking and the pictures to see the then and now. Very relaxing!. Too many videos nowadays are loud and have a million jump cuts.
Love this format. Not that I dislike commentary, but this really recreates the experience of walking the ground by yourself; with just your thoughts. I did this very thing here a few years ago. It is impossible to reconcile the grandeur and pristine beauty of this place with the magnitude of evil the once existed here. You simply can't wrap your head around it.
I was thinking the same thing. I would pause the video and just think about the place 85+ years ago. Pictures gave a great sense of where everything was at that time. Great Job!
Watching this, being left alone with your thoughts and questions and seeing a few pictures for reference is a fascinating experience that allows you to focus on otherwise probably overlooked details in the scenery. I like this a lot!
JD always enjoy your down to earth, informative narrative however this first History Traveler Walking Tour was very enjoyable. Thanks for the new format but keep doing the videos that you do so well.
This is exactly the content my mind and soul need right now. I feel like you’re taking us on your exploration expeditions. The popping up of the historic photos in their present day place is brilliant
This is great companion content for the original channel. I really enjoy this format when Im looking for something to wind down to at the end of the night.
No music, not talking, just the crunching sound of gravel and leaves under foot with a fantastic view. Nice one JD, look forward to seeing many more sites around the world which I’m sure you have a back log of footage!
I may have missed something initially but someone suggested turning on the captions to follow along with a silent narrative. That made a big contribution to the video. One can also follow along by turning on the transcript. Keep it up, J.D.
THANKS for taking me back to 1970 when I was a 1lt in the First Battalion 3rd Infantry Div stationed in Germany and spent a weekend touring this beautiful area. Hope to make a return vist some day.
I enjoyed that, soaking up the atmosphere, it’s a peaceful spot which doesn’t come through in videos with commentary, I could almost feel the chill of the air in my lungs🙏
Excellent video, JD. I had the opportunity to be there in May earlier this year and do exactly what you did in this video, just walking around, taking my time, using historical pictures to see the context and exact locations. It was such a unique experience! It is such an amazingly beautiful place, stunning views and so peaceful! Can't get my head around that some of the most horrible and diabolic events in history were planned in this beautiful and peaceful place. Obersalzburg became one of my top favourite places to visit and learn from history. So many things to see and learn from history (the Berghof, Kehsteinaus, Konigssee, the bunkers, the SS KAserne, Albert Speer's studio, the Mooslahnerkopf, the Hotel zum Turken, Goring and Bormann's homes, the documentation centre, the Gastehaus Hoher Goll, the Platterhof, the Kamfhaus and more). I loved every minute of that trip! Can't wait to go back with my kid and let him learn from history this way.
I'm not one who complained, but happy to be here. Thanks for your incredible work J.D. Matching the photos with the present day locations was icing on the cake. Happy Thanksgiving!
I was skeptical of this concept/format when I began watching, but found myself unable to separate my eyes from it. Turns out, I really enjoyed it. Was that an airfield at the 20:31 mark? A weather station? Maybe it is just me, but that guy on the swing was rather surreal and freaked me out a bit. New sub crossed-over from the Mother Ship. The Berghof and surrounding areas are perfect for a silent walking tour. Very curious how you will pursue other locations that are less compatible. Great job and thank you!!
This is super cool JD! I have a suggestion or maybe idea. Would it be possible to try one of those 360 cameras that as a viewer I can control and pan around? Not sure how difficult that would be? I've seen some videos of fighter jets where they mounted the 360 camera and I was able to move around and watch from different angles. Really cool! Just a thought! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Really enjoyed this video. Felt like I am walking and feeling the environment. One suggestion , if possible, 360 camera can be used to make live 360 videos for virtual tour. Anybody can watch anywhere as it doesn't restrict the field of view. By the way, thanks for your efforts and your legs to walk for us 😁
Absolutely love the concept of this channel and the photos you bring along with. One recommendation would be to include some narration about where you are and where you're headed. It may require some more work but I think with the effort you already put into researching for the main channel you could add some great depth. Not over the top narration the entire time but some fill-ins. Keep up the great work!
It's amazing, I just returned from their in September. I spent 7 Days in Berchtesgaden, most of that time was right up that very trail where you're walking now. Each and every visit I always end up discovering something new.
Perhaps this might work better in the cities, towns and villages where the transition shots still give us something to watch. Or perhaps captions long the bottom of the screen to describe what we are looking at. The historical pictures are a plus. We visited the Berghof area several years ago but didn’t have to explode outside of the main area. This video makes we want to return.
JD -- excellent presentation, although I have no issue with your spoken channels. This has the vibe of the Ruiter productions, which I also found exceptional. No dialogue -- just the "then and now" presentations. I'd been to Berchtesgaden several times in the 80s. Stayed at the General Walker Hotel, which was demolished in 2001. Did some skiing, toured some of the tunnel complex, and drank a fair amount of that great Bavarian beer. Several wonderful memories. I'd suggest to all to review the "then and now" presentations by Ruiter Productions. Lots and lots of sites throughout Germany.
I love your Channels one of my favorite ever ..... Don't like that you don't talk in this channel.... it's not the same and I think Most everyone Enjoys listening to you Explain everything so well as you do .....just saying....😊
Was there a few years back. Had hiked down to the Berghof from the documentation centre. Was interesting to see how huge of a footprint the house had. The sign is definitely new since my visit. Can’t believe I missed the emergency exit. Will be there next summer and will spend more time exploring. I remember from a previous visit you had mentioned a guy who gives walking tours of the area. Can you pass along his name?
Terrific video. It will really give folks a sense of the place. I was there last June after much research. When you start up the path at 3:50, I believe you're walking on some rubble that was bulldozed over the main driveway. Compare with the scene shown in your photo at 18:50. I read somewhere that Hitler once remarked he could see Salzburg from the Berghof. He was right! I had a 400mm lens with me and I saw the Festung Hohensalzburg clearly.
I disagree, what I'd prefer is a note when he holds up the photos of what is in the photos. Other then that I think this is perfect. Don't get me wrong I love JD. I think it just goes better with my internal thought process. Having it be your own internal voice reading it to go with your thoughts. I hope I made that make sense.
There is a multi episode series on the main channel diving into the history of this area. It includes museum visits, site visits, and commentary on its significance. I suggest you search for it
I like this format! I'm a hiker, so I felt like I was exploring the area myself. It goes well with your other channel and perhaps post links to those videos in your description here? I was quizzing myself from what I learned from your earlier videos. I was stumped as to whose house got bombed that turned into the park tho. Goebbel's?
Love it JD, but just thinking here, maybe a little background music? Also, if you will, I have a question. When you are out touring places just like this as well as the many tunnels and abandoned buildings, etc., I have seen you in over the years, do you do this, mostly, by yourself or is there someone with you, to at least, be able to call out for assistance, heaven forbid, if needed?
Disagree about the music. Just the visual, TYVM. Music as part of the intro, maybe, but there is no more compelling element than silence, or footsteps in the leaves or on the cobblestones. JD has it right.
@@Eupher72120 I agree with you other than maybe just bringing into the video some strategically placed music through out; for instance, when panning over the beautiful mountains, etc.
First, I get a kick out of the sign at 17:16 where the maker inserted the German word for "is." Had a chuckle out of that. Second, I will say that a little commentary would be nice. The pics don't say it all, after all. Overall, excellent video and looks like it's quite the hike to get around there. I wish I would have done that the last time I was there, but it was quite overcast and the leaves would have been out so not much to see other than the ruins.
I remember you mentioning that you had a walking no talking videos coming up. But I was expecting to hear at the beginning of this video, "Right now..."
excellent concept a walk as if you were there with script to explain things , great idea JD, wish they would have left some of the house standing for history sake not to inshrine hittler but to help us visualize and remember those times weather good or bad, destroying the house dosnt to bring one person killed back or wipe away the history which i think was the intention of destroying it

Same for Civil War or even the Pacific island battles. Time is a cruel master when it comes to the preservation of old historical sites.
Hitler loved that location because of its commanding view of the Austrian mountain range. He could see his birth country from there. He also feared a bombing run coming from Austria by the allies, and so this view would also allow him to watch for it and, he would see the allied bomber planes coming over the mountains. Once Hitler had made his disappearance, the MG42 positions were abandoned. Then the bombing run from the allies, destroyed the Berghof, the MG42 positions, and damaged the neighboring hotel that still stands today. The only thing that survived the bombing was the road which still exists and of course the bunker. It is rumored that the Berghof had a gold elevator system that led Hitler and and all personnel straight down to the bunker. The eagles nest also have a gold elevator system.

My thoughts exactly. So ironic that such beauty could have housed the most monstrous people in human history.
I was thinking the same thing. I would pause the video and just think about the place 85+ years ago. Pictures gave a great sense of where everything was at that time. Great Job!
