I teach elementary in Richmond, VA. Our kindergarten classes aren't allowed to nap anymore. Which I totally disagree with. A tired 5 yr old gets cranky...& really need to take a moment to regroup

Over the years, kg was weaned down to 45mins naps, then 30mins, then just a 15 min break w/their heads on their desk...now nothing at all. The school system felt they were old enough 😒 to go all day & naps cut into too much academic time
Back in my day, we didn't have back packs. We had book bags. We had #2 pencils & blue or black Bic pens. We weren't allowed to have red, because teachers were afraid we'd change our grades before we showed our parents. If you were really fancy, you had that blue and white Bic pen with blue, black, green and red ink, but then they made you take the red ink out. We had Mead Five Star Trapper Keepers. I see they're still making binder type stuff. That was one of the most modern things we had. We had Crayola crayons, not color markers. If you were fancy, you had the 64 box at home, but it was not allowed at school. Burnt sienna was one of those fancy colors that was used for some people of color. Thanks for the Target school supply tour. It certainly brought back memories...

We usually buy the basics, then the teacher's have their list of supplies the 1st week of school. So I don't buy a lot right away.They have good deals there. But we just did a school clothing trip at Burlington, so glad that is taken care of.
Yes same here. Or use what had from previous year long as it's in decent order to use why spend extra. Even go to back to school drives where things are free. Sometimes people will give free stuff if you say looking for stuff.

Oh no, they put the 24 pack Sharpie S Note in the wrong spot, it's not $5.29 but $16.99. I remember having Sanrio / Lisa Frank school items back in the 80's. I don't remember ever having to buy items for the classroom though. We brought our own stuff and if we ran out of pencils, pen or paper we had a .25cent machine attached to a stamp machine to buy it from.
Im not buying the 30 pens for 14.99 or whatever. Reason: people will borrow them, not return them, and I will regret buying them. They are cute though. So stylish! If you are gonna steal my pens, it will be the 8 pens for a dollar ones. 😐

My daughter(14) came to me and said mommy these teachers ask for 8-10 notebooks every year and I haven’t finished an entire notebook since 1st grade 😂 my girl said mommy I just need a 5 subject notebook these teachers ask for the most I said u waited to you got to 9th grade to tell me 😂😂
Wow! They do have a lot of stuff, I think I spend more money before school starts then Christmas. Lucky I have one left that still goes to school. I just wish they had more stuff for left handed people, I did fine left handed notebooks, besides the scissors. My son also carries alot of books, I wanted to buy the backpack with the wheels, but it's not aloud. I'm like why, they said cause they can tumble or trip over them. Really!! I just did a little back to school 🏫 shopping in Target this past Sunday. I bought one of the marvel notebooks for 2.99, spider man and a few folders for .50 cents. I'm not in a rush to buy a lot right now tho. Since NYC kids don't go back to school until Sept
I find getting my kids the basics and let them get the stickers they want to put on them works. Otherwise other things get neglected and habits to the trash can
I just finished my education in 2020 after getting my law degree. Did straight out of hs undergrad and law school....WHERE WAS ALL THIS CUTE STUFF. I would have to order from ebay or shops for japanese or korean stationary since everything was so basic I hated it.

Good question! Worse still, if the parents don't buy the supplies, most teachers end up buying supplies for their students so that at least they can do their work. I have asked my family and friends to accept all offers of pens, pencils, etc. at trade shows, conventions, and career fairs so I can give those to students.
It's been like this for years though in public school as far back as I can remember from 90s. I know my kids school is a charter school it's great, I pay 100$ they order the shorts,pants and school t-shirt. Anything extra pay extra. Plus the school supplies it's great! I just pick up and it's ready.
In the Netherlands kids 4-12 years get their stuff at school and you don't have to buy anything. 13 and up buy their own personal supplies. In art class some materials like paint are provided, but you buy your own pencils if you want to have some quality. And we don't do wipes and hand sanitizer although that might have changed now.
And a lot of other supplies when my kids were little I would wait every Sunday for the Walgreen's, target, Kmart, and walmart sales papers... Some of these very items like folders, bic pens of all colors, Crayola crayons, spiral note books, and notebook paper would be good prices. Like 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents and etc. Yes it might have been limits but what I would do is take all of my kids allow them to each get the limit, then I would get my limit. Uniforms i would buy each one to start off with two pairs of pants, and 3 shirts, big pack of underwear, and a big pack of socks. I had 4 children which are all grown now, they also would get a new pair gym shoes/regular shoes and bookbags..Times have changed so much everything cost more and more now... I also would go too back to school give aways..
I don't accidentally take up pens I deliberately do. But I will tell you and when you demand you pen from me me vex bad . Me love love love pens and journals especially colored pens.

For markers and crayons,I prefer Crayola. The others are a washed out colors.
