A variant of the WJW jingle at 3:46 was used at their Detroit sister station WJBK around this time - "So drive with care both night and day that we all might share WJBK." WJBK was Top 40 at the time, unlike WJW. I believe that jingle melody was conceived originally for WJBK and Storer may have used it for other stations in their chain.
@RolloSmokes: Based on Newspaper articles of the time, Westinghouse took over WTAM/WNBK Channel 3 sometime in late 1955..For whatever reason, the call letters were'nt changed until February 13, 1956..Incidentally, 55 years ago today..
FCC call letter changes were not automatic as they seem to be today. Used to take at least 45-60 days back then. The KYW/WKYC change in 1965 was automatic because of the Federal court order forcing NBC to take back the Cleveland operations and Westinghouse their Philadelphia operations and original KYW calls.
WTAM is the same station at 1100 since 1941. 3WE might be considered classic to an extent but WTAM and KYW (Same station 1956-65 were in my mind "more classic" The reason they gave up WWWE was simply to change their identity, not so much to get WTAM back,,Those calls just happened to be available//
If you've ever seen Jack Parr on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, he says he had the best voice in Cleve. Johnny asks him, "Who has the best voice now? Parr replies, "Wayne Mack" who was heard on this video signing off for WGAR.
The WDOK sign off is actually a clean recording with no grainy crackling noises in it
The Golden Age of radio. Thanks for giving us this, Tim.
The song featured in the WDOK signoff is Otto Cesana's Mine at Last.

I remember hearing WGAR AM 1220, here in North Carolina, after our local WCBT AM 1230 would sign off at midnight.
The WSRS call letters are today used by an FM station in Worcester, Massachusetts.

WJW FM 104.1 FM is now WQAL (Q-104).
"Westinghouse Radio in Cleveland, WTAM..."? I thought the call letters were changed to KYW as soon as the swap was made in '56.
I hear the voice of Indians broadcaster Jimmy Dudley announcing one of the WERE id's. WERE was the radio home of the Indians from 1950-1972.
1:01-1:08.
Is today's WTAM at the same dial position as the old one? Is that why "3WE" gave up those classic call letters?
