    Since I saw EMU68 some 3 or 4 months ago, then I have said that this changes everything on the PiStorm. This is a game changer. Reason is that we are talking bare-metal, and we saw it with these RPI versions of Vice as well. No OS and file system under the hood that can get corrupted the same way as Linux when shutting off power.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tossing out the Linux OS does have it's pros and cons. Greater speed and lower memory usage are huge pros, but you also lose all the tools, file system access and general hardware/software interfacing that Linux provides. Everything has to be written from scratch to work on bare metal. In general terms, running a program on bare metal doesn't automatically guarantee it is more stable and less susceptible to damage. That all depends on the programmers. But I wish the team all the best, they do amazing work!

    • @brostenen
      @brostenen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@another3997 I think that in this case, the person who make EMU68 on his own, really do think of what is good to have and what is overkill to have.

    Well I got motivated and installed the Pistorm600. Honestly I bought it a long time ago and forgotten about it and was about to buy another when I saw I had bought one from Sorden before. I also bought a couple more 3A only to find I had two waiting to be used. Yea I buy tons of things and because I am not in a mood to install them I put them off and yea often forget what I have especially if I move it off my desk of things to do. Worse is when I know I have something but spend all day looking for it. Anyway I have to get caught up with what I have and stop buying stuff.

    Chris, I can easily see the difference in speed between the original PiStorm and EMU68.
    Does the version of the Raspberry Pi Used have any bearing on that speed?
    For example, would a Pi 4 run EMU68 faster than a Pi Zero? And, roughly how much difference in speed?
    Great work as usual Dr. Chris

      in the standard sysinfo tests, the dhrystone/s mip/s and mflop/s , yes... However the chipspeed thing has always been a problem, I think my tests of the pistorm vs pistorm32 are inreased only due to the increased processing power of the more powerful pi units.

    I was forced to remember some things from about 30 years ago and learn some things about the Raspberry Pi SBC but I grinded this out step by step even after finding the Github. I did search a good deal for what I can do next with the RTG and all you were talking about. I literally just spent more time in Workbench than I have since 1993 (lol) and I learned. I learned that I need some kind of patch for my Workbench 3.1 for larger drives and I learned how to setup a Pi 3A+ to do what you showed but I can't find the next steps. I did look through your videos (not all and I'm burnt out so I may have just missed it) but I can't find things like how I set the CPU speed for compatibility or the RTG as I mentioned. Can you please link me Good Sir? Merry Christmas!

      Cpu speeds and things are in its config where you set the rom name. Rtg is a driver you download the zip from the emu68

    To be a little more clear about bare metal. The mushashi emulator runs on a linux distro and is interpreter based. The emu68 emulator is JIT based (Just In Time)
    The emu68 emulator is written to run directly on the raspberry pi there is no there is no underlaying OS like linux, this is was we call bare metal.

      True, the JIT compilation to ARM machine code is the important difference imo. With linux you can get around interruptions by locking a program to a core or using xenomai etc. But interpreters will always be slow compared with JIT compilers.

Can someone point out what I am missing? Thanks Chris! You keep some wonderful technology alive...

      caffeine is rtg only it should boot right up, idk about on the 1000 with its 512k chipram, but i use emu68 as a base emulator, and made my own type 76 partitions and installed wb on them, as shown. you should get a kickstart screen on standard rgb if your rom is configured correctly, then take it from there.

      did you use the hd files on the minimig card? or carve out hard drives on the type76 partition of emu68? you need to use the bootloader with the minimig, which apparently is working if you can see the emu68logo on hdmi of the pi. remember to select the hard drives on the minimig, then save the config, and it should boot, do not call a rom or anything from the pi, leave its config virtually blank and stock. get it working then modify it later.

Saved the rom file in the sd under kick.rom and make sure the code is in the config. When I turn on the amiga I get a black screen. If I disable the rom option in the config file the amiga boots. no it does not, the emu68 is the hdmi RTG portion of the amiga, unless your running caffeine or something pre setup for rtg only the native amiga RGB video is theoutput. and it will not be active until you configure Picasso96 for RTG. i stated this in the video in great detail. i have mine on a db23 to scart switch that outputs hdmi so i can toggle on a simple hdmi switchbox between the two formats.
