  • Hello Hello you lovely lot!
Today I share with you my review of brand new musical Why am I So Single?
This is probably one of the hardest reviews for me as I went into the show with such high hopes, confident that I would find a new favourite musical only to feel a tad let down with what I watched. I didn't want this review to just be a list of negatives so I hope I have explained all my thoughts and feelings clearly.
I know my opinions on the show will not be shared with everyone so please feel free to disagree in the comments as I am always open to discussion.

I went to the matinee today and I actually really enjoyed it. I am 27 and a big Six fan - I don’t think it’s as good as Six but it is still up there for me.
I connected with it quite a lot but I do have that one best friend , but don’t have the dating life/experiences .. but still had levels to connect.
I think it was a bit jump-y in places .. like the bee in the middle of the tense moment. But I also think they put things in there to keep it light. Same with the Nancy grief song - I was hooked and felt the feelings but I almost liked being snapped out of the sadness for a giggle again.
I do understand the risky-ness of so much swearing with a 14+ age. Definitely something I think they need to reconsider (age wise) but again, I barley noticed the swearing because it is how I speak with my friends (which is really a bad habit on my part) but personally it didn’t bother me 😂🙈
I do agree on some of your points with song lengths etc & I like hearing your point of view, mine was just a totally different feeling which is what theatre is all about

Honestly I feel like if they wanted to have a musical that dosen’t have a plot they should have committed. This could have been what company was in the 1980’s and had multiple people to focus on. Like talk about different people in their lives and their relationship to romance. A chorus line as well manages to do what I wanted from this as well

Couldn’t agree with this review more. I truly get the sense Marlow and Moss were very very aware of the pressure that came with following up their megahit. I mean what do you do if your debut work could very easily become your career magnum opus?! It becomes a little bit of a mess because they’re trying to shoe-horn so much in. They’re trying to make this work different, but also, keep those core elements that the six audience want and need from them. It’s a clearly very difficult balancing act to achieve. As a millennial, a lot of the humour in this show was very stale. It’s nowhere near as razor sharp as Six.

I am a millennial and have the type of platonic relationship in this musical and I felt the same way about a lot of this. Especially the flatness and the over use of some of the jokes and the fact that it was made out that romantic relationships were the be all and end all. I'm glad it's not just me who was dissapointed

@impproductions11 that's very interesting that even as a millennial there were elements you couldn't quite connect with. I'm actually just so sad bc I was so ready to have a new favourite musical🤣

I am a millennial. I didn't laugh once. In the words of the writers themselves, it is "lazy and forced."

I absolutely loved seeing why am I so single last week - it was exactly mine and my sister‘s humor and we loved the cast and storylines and really enjoyed the crazy elements too. But it’s so interesting to me seeing other people’s different opinions on it - we’re all different and that’s really cool too. The show was very relatable to me (I have a friend that’s so much like Nancy and Jo also felt super real) but I understand not everyone sees it that way.

As a not fan of Six..... this helps. I try and keep this neat.
I see a bunch ton of issues with their writing style that gets under my skin at times. Howard Ho helped me be a bit more charitable thanks to undercoveting some of their musical techniques.
Still..... I'm sorry, but...... they keep coming in with half an idea and being allowed to run with it. With Split Lip, Mischief, Brittain and Floyd Jones and some seriously great things out of the RSC this year, they have contemporaries doing MUCH more with less.

I’ve just watched two 30+mins back to back reviews of this show which are as opposite as can be. But after Micky Jo’s enthusiastic gushing - which peculiarly did not endear me to the show - it was refreshing to hear your counterpoint, I feel they’re tonally more aligned to what I would think if I were to see the show. But I don’t think I will. I’m Gen X so possibly not in the target demographic. Cheers!

@darrenbertram7289 ah interesting. I have yet to have the time to watch Mickys video about it! Isn't it just so interesting how everyone's taste in theatre varies so much. Im glad my review was enjoyable and interesting. If it helps my Gen X parents said it was fun but not fully their thing

Mickey was kind of gushing, and then spends quite a long time at the end of his video basically saying that the show doesn't actually work. But he just happened to have fun at the show, and here is a reviewer who didn't, and is also saying that the show doesn't work.
