  • This tutorial takes you through the creation of 'Las Manos' ('The Hands'), a realistic oil painting depicting a touching moment between three hands - touching in all senses of the word. 'Las Manos' measures 50cm by 60cm and took 6 days to complete. At the time of its creation I was reading a biography of Diego Velazquez, whose iconic painting 'Las Meninas' may or may not have influenced my title. Enjoy ;)

Good evening, Clavers! I truly enjoyed watching you paint and explain these beautiful paintings. Question: What canvas did you use? It almost look like wood (the texture of the canvas). You were very detailed with your painting. I loved it! Continued to paint these beautiful pictures. Beautiful! ❤️🖌️🎨📷🌍

Hi Sharon, :) really glad you enjoyed it.
For this painting I used a canvas board and not stretched canvas. Come to think of it stretched canvas is actually better because at least it moves slightly as you apply pressure while you paint whereas the board is stiff so it’s like painting on wood.
I don’t know the name of the fabric I use (when I use stretched canvas) but it’s reasonably tough and inelastic - in this video it’s the one I use to clean the brushes at 2:57. We just call it “canvas” 😆

@@ClaversOdhiamboArt Hello, Clavers! It is so good to see you back on TH-cam. It's been awhile. I will have to go back and look at your other video that you posted up two weeks ago. I don't know, if l have ever seen the stretched canvas, but I could tell that it was a very hard and sturdy canvas. No matter what you paint your pictures on, it will turn out to be beautiful. You're a great artist who takes the simplest things and turn it into something great. God bless you! 🙏🏾🖌️🎨📷🌍❤️

Absolutely amazing work! thank you for sharing. thinner can be very toxic overtime as it absorbs into the skin. wearing gloves when using it will be safer.

Thanks Lauren. The solvent I'm using here is kerosene, which also has its own side effects, especially when inhaled. I rarely ever use thinner except when cleaning really hardened brushes but when I do I only come into contact with it for a few seconds at a time and in a well-aerated space. Gloves can't work for me because feeling the texture of the bristles is a big part of cleaning brushes but thanks for the concern :)
