In Japan, many married women work part-time and come home to do all the housework and take care of their kids and not-so-helpful husbands. Later, they take care of their aging/dying parents or parents-in-law and then their husbands get old and need caring. My grandmother seemed truly happy for the first time when all that had been over, but she was like over 70 herself by then. Call me selfish but that's no fair way for women to live in a so-called modern society.

Yeah because those husbands work full time jobs that earn the majority if not all the income. If you stay at home or only work part-time you better be the one doing chores! Can’t freeload just because you’re a woman.

@@_ArsNova Did you even watch the video you're commenting on? Did you even read the message from @izumiozawa3719 that you're replying to? Were you raised by wolves in a forest and just now entered into human civilization for the first time so that you could make ignorant comments on the internet? You talk about married women who stay home or who work part time as if they laze about eating candy and watching soap operas with all their imaginary free time, a dumb stereotype that hasn't been relevant since the 1960's. All over the world there are men who come home from work and feel entitled to doing nothing. Women have a job too, except there's no office or factory to leave and there’s no punchcard to fill out. It's called care work and involves constantly maintaining the happiness and comfort of everyone else in your family and it literally never ends. It is just assumed that women will care for children, sick family members, elderly parents and in-laws and eventually their own husbands and grandchildren until the day a woman dies. All this care work, including daily cooking and cleaning, is rewarded with a paycheck of zero dollars, because the patriarchal order views women's contributions as insignificant. But yeah, @arsnova1321, women are the freeloaders🙄

@@_ArsNova Are u kidding? If women work fulltime job in Japan, will the husband stay at home to take care of children for them? For your info, Japan has quite bad day care system due to lack of human resources so your children needs your care until they can get to elementary school. Women can earn as much as men if they dont do this child bearing shit. Im working in Japan now so feel free to refute me

Indian here, my parents work 9-5 job but my mother has to do household chores all alone after coming home while my father gets to have free time, goes outings with his friends and family or just simply sleep while my mom prepare for dinner after work. He doesn't bother to even offer help, my mom and i do all the household chores, it doesn't stop there my father do not even take to us to hospital when we fell sick, do not take us out like to buy household appliances etc so we had to depend on him for transportation bcuz my mom doesnt know to drive a vechile we would have to spend lot of money for auto fares. Growing up seeing how my father barely did any contribution to his family I've decided not to become a mother and live a hell of a life with this kind of a man.
Men need to earn more money if they want their spouses to stay at home and have kids. I would happily be a mom if my man makes money that is sufficient enough in this economy not when he himself couldn't secure a job at these present times.

Your dad must be earning 5x than your mom for sure considering the gender pay gap. So the equation is imbalanced already. If you want equality you need equal distribution of labour. Since ur father earns more than ur mom, your mom is compensating that with her work.

    • @K000H
      @K000H 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +533

@@kryptonite0018 A higher paying job ≠ harder work.
My dad earned a lot more than my mom before he retired, but my mom is the one to take care if 10 screaming children every day. Me and my dad gets tired just baby sitting my sisters 2 kids. 10 and more is a nightmare. My mom is the overworked hero, no matter the income she brings.
At least my dad is an amazing guy and does the shopping and cooking, while my mom do the house cleaning and laundry. It baffles me how it's more normal in households for the women to do all the house work as well as shopping and cooking, while the man get's to relax. Even tho they both have been at work the same day.
You're never payed by effort. You're payed what your boss's boss wants to spend on their employes. The county/state does not care to pay a lot for their public kindergarten teachers who literally ruin their hearing in their job, but a big private company with expensive products are more likely to pay their employees a fair wage for some office time.
If people got payed for their efforts, then there would be a lot of other jobs with higher salaries. Like teachers, nurses, artists..

@kryptonite0018 not sure if you lack reading comprehension or if you're just being willfully ignorant, but op used the plural form of parent when they were describing the people who earn money in they're household ("my parents work 9-5") so if the mother works those hours but is still expected to do all the housework IN ADDITION to her 8-hour shift, how exactly is that "an equal distrubution of labor"? What exactly is the mother compensating for, when she has a job outside the home, same as her husband?

I am Korean male who lived in US and Europe and I think South Korean fathers, in general, are the worst fathers I've ever seen. They spend the least amount of time with their kids and do the least amount of household work. There's really a bad tension with mothers and fathers and frankly I can't blame women who choose not to deal with this. Even sadder are the sons of these fathers that would likely choose not to have kids when they get married because they realize they will not be any better.

Why have kids? Well, how about experiencing self-sacrificing, unpossessive charity, and forging an eternal bond within a loving family? Maybe it's to carry on your bloodline, the very thing your ancestors and predecessors fought tooth and nail to preserve. An ancestry that weathered bloody battles, survived famines, traversed distant lands to settle and build a country while still having children - where we now enjoy wash machines, electricity, and neatly packaged food in nearby supermarkets but now people want to just give up and forfeit a family life for some shitty career or a solo cat lady gig, obsessing over stuff that never brings real happiness.
Don't throw away the legacy they worked so hard to create! It's time to stop acting like men trying to build wealth when having money to visit a dirty Paris or to eat a cake outside will not replace the amazing love you get from creating new life, human life, eternal souls.
We should recognize the responsibility women have for their nation and family. Preserve the culture, uphold the identity, and contribute to creating new generations that can bask in the beauty of life. Don't let paycheck-to-paycheck living rob you of the profound experience of building something meaningful - you can always have children-

When my mum was pregnant, she had gone to work 8 to 5. She had asked my dad, who gets back from work before she does to simply clean the chicken. Not cook, just clean. She came back from work, nothing had been done. On top of that, he had left the kitchen a mess after making himself some tea. He then had the audacity to ask her, what's for dinner. She said she cooked dinner that day in tears. She was heavily pregnant at the time. First pregnancy, too.

It is a problem with the social system. Many women want to have a family one day, but they also want to have a career. The problem is that people (men and women) are expected to work so much that they don't see any possibility to start a family because taking time off during pregnancy and when raising a kid will set them back years in the pursuit of climbing the corporate ladder, if it doesn't get them fired first. The fact most men expect the wife to be the only one raising the kids and taking care of the home surely doesn't help at all either. With the current culture they are forced to chose between children and a career, there is simply not enough time for both. I wouldn't say it is inherently a wise choice, they are just forced to pick the option they think will make them least unhappy in the end, which is kind of sad.

We learned from our mothers and grandmothers. Domestic abuse was common and even normal for their generation, and women were slaves to the husband's family, especially their mother-in-laws. At least two times a year on new years and thanksgiving, wives were expected to cook for the husband's whole family, including all the cousins and nephews, because she had to "pay her respect" to her husband's ancestors. Meanwhile, the husband and his family do nothing but eat and enjoy the food. The wife isn't supposed to eat with them and eats the leftovers after dinner.
Now, Korea's patriarchy taken the worst parts of Confucianism and Capitalism and expects women to suffer as their previous generations did while also working full time. Every human is motivated by their survival and self-interest; women learned that they cannot be the ones who silently suffer and do all the work behind the scenes while never given credit for the labor.

The reason why Korean men's housework hours are low in the world is because most Korean couples are dual-income households. It is a false statement to say that just based on housework hours alone, the level of Korean men's participation in housework is similar to that of underdeveloped countries.
Domestic experts in Korea point to the fact that most of the advanced facilities in Korea are concentrated in Seoul, leading to an excessively high population density, as a cause of Korea's low birth rate. It is not very related to the issue of women's rights that Westerners claim.
Although I am Asian, I acknowledge that Westerners have progressive thinking when it comes to technical and creative thinking. However, Westerners are a group that cannot think logically when dealing with women's rights and PC-related issues.

I love that it definitely taught me independence and confidence, but I do remember times when I slip up and forget to do my chores, my mother's empty threat to me was that she wished she never gave birth to me or she wished she could leave the family and be as lazy as I am. So if I've witnessed a woman going depressed and crazy over child care and housework to the point of reprimanding their children with abusive threats, why would I be excited to pursue it? Why would I want to yell at a child like my mom did to me? not saying I would do that but I don't know how the stress of motherhood can change up my personality.

My grandpa didn't help her pay for it, but he helped me and my cousins. I was able to graduate without debt and my mom would sometimes say I wasn't grateful enough. What does that even mean? I used my degree to go teach English in Asia because I wanted to live abroad, it's not like I didn't use it. Anyway, the main message here is to make yourself happy and do what you want to do. Only have kids if you will truly be happy with that choice. If you had asked me 10 years ago, I would have said I wanted kids. But that was because I wanted to prove to myself that I had value. The real problem is measuring living human beings as if measuring investment risks. People shouldn't be valued by money or by obedience. How dehumanizing is that? Are children really only worth it if they don't "cause problems?" I've never seen a war started by children, so it seems to me that adults are way more problematic than any teen, child, or baby.
Also, "time-consuming"? Really? And pining for wealth isn't time-consuming? People aren't working 60+ hours a week, no weekends, to gain riches that they'lljust have to leave to someone else when they die? Seriously, when did we decide that gaining wealth is the measure of someone's character and a measure of a "successful" life? If this is truly the direction we want to go then we deserve the inevitable extinction that will come with it.

My dad's family didn't let her continue her education nor to get her any job , dad even supported them .Then she got her first child at the age of 19. And had me later. 30 yrs from their marriage, she had been doing all the housecores by herself and raising 2 children . She never demands anything for herself, if does that's just for the kids. But my dad never baits an eye. If she falls sick he claims "that's selfmade sickness, tf u even do to fall sick" , every now and then calls her illiterate , dumb , unworthy . If she ever wants a small gift for puja occasion or her birthday, all that happens in our house is fight. My dad never helps in housecore, never did take us to our school or tution, doesn't give any money for other necessary products of house (like shampoo, soap), doesn't let us go for doctore check up . Tell me, is asking for the bare minimum worth these inhuman behaviour towards my mom? She has been working day to night all day, but instead of a thank you she gets this. If this is society's standard of getting a wife and mother, then I don't want to be a part of this. Raising a family needs love and understanding in both emotional and financial support system. Tbh marriage is a teamwork. If the work hours are brutal then there is no way both the partners could work and raise a family. But here are the things :
    1. Even with a full-time work of one person, it will be difficult to raise a whole family. Education is expensive, food is expensive, you have to give medical care and financial support not only to your parents but your in-laws as well, oh and also can't even buy a house of your own.
    2. With the "ideal" lifestyle of so many women being stay-at-home wives, there will be likely that families wouldn't want to raise a girl-child, because Asian parents love to boast about which uni their kid is going and what job they do. So there would be discrimination against daughters. Not to mention, high chance of women getting stuck in toxic and abusive marriages.
    3. Most men, don't really value housework and raising children. So they won't really respect their wives and think of them as someone lesser than them.
    4. No financial independence for women, they will have to ask their husbands for money for every little thing they want, high chance the husband say "NO". Unless they both decide that for housework, the wife will get a certain amount. But that's very unlikely too as we have seen in our society.
I see a lot of people blaming women for being "SELFISH" for not having children, and my question to those people is "SO WHAT?"
Having a child might be a gift but not at the cost of an individual's mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

So the men have to take on the more labor intensive jobs that no one else will do while all the females go to the college system that is suited to benefit them. There’s literally no male only colleges but many, and some federally backed up, female only colleges. This means that even if you as a parent plan ahead, there is no guarantee that childcare will be possible for your child and that you will be able to do your job.

Birth rates are down here in Canada as well. I am 49 years old and female. I made a conscious choice in my teens I didn't want kids. Which wasn't that popular amongst my peers. All of them have kids. Women are statistically disadvantaged when it comes to having kids. Men not so much. They don't lose jobs or earnings when they have kids. Very little changes for them professionally. Wpmen sacrifice so much more.

Korea is an extreme example of what’s going on in the developed world. Women who get higher education and a career don’t want to be tied down at home with children. Then if you have children anyway you need other people to raise them (grandparents, day care, teachers, etc.). If you make everything hyper competitive you create a culture where people live only to work. That’s why that woman says she’s moving to New Zealand. As a woman, growing up in Canada, most of the women I’ve spoken to after marriage have issues with men doing chores, no matter the cultural background. My husband is a good man and I love him, but when we first got married, he would come downstairs every morning and sit there, waiting to be served breakfast. That’s how he was raised. I don’t believe in nitpicking chores, but division of labour is important. Man or woman, if you want your marriage to last, you need to be an equal contributor to the marriage. Equality might mean different things at different times, and it’s not always 50/50, but it’s important to have balance.

The main problem of Korean society is conservatism based on Confucian ideas.
They still arguably say that Husband is the head of the wife, but wife has to do the most in a family and do all house chores including child- rearing, which is also what the mother- and father-in-laws take granted.
Many husbands also avoid participating in child-raising and housework.
At workplaces, pregnancy is hardly recognized as good news. Female employees find it hard to come back after baby delivery. They have to face negative performance assessment because they were off work for months.
Korean society itself still has negative views on pregnancy.
How many women in Korea will want to get married and have children without having responsibility from husband, company, and this society?

Not mentioned here, a big omission, is rampant sexism - socially, culturally and institutionally. In the modern economy, you need both partners to share the burden of childrearing, you need the state to help with childcare as both parents now need to work and earn, you need a work environment that can accommodate parenthood (not just motherhood). The traditional gender / parenting roles that are at the root of this problem were fit for an agricultural society, but not the new service-based economy. Until there is a cultural shift supported or driven by state intervention and legal protections, the environment will remain a hostile place for parents and families. Many will continue to choose childlessness over running this gauntlet. SK is not unique in all this, but they are at the extreme end of the spectrum.
