The human experience is marked by suffering due to the fact that we have the will, the ambition and the desire of an immortal, all knowing and all powerful being. Yet, we are mortal, know a small amount compared to everything that exists and have little power over the universe. No doubt dissapointment is a constant, and the strain caused by the disparity between desire and reality is so intense. Overall, Schopenhaur seems to have found a great, if not the best, way to experience life. By reducing our desires to levels more easy to obtain we can reduce the forementioned strain of existence.
I overcame the hardships of life by doing this: Embrace the negativity of this life and accept it, reduce my desires, live a simple life, have faith, and know that this life is temporary and what comes after is THE real life. Happiness and suffering greatly depend on mentality and perception. If you change that, you will have a happy and beautiful life.
This has been my world view for the longest time. When I look at the world I see the infinite things that cause us pain and the very VERY few things that can actually bring people happiness or enjoyment in comparison.
When I first heard Schopenhauer was a "pessimist", I was quite surprised. I thought he was an optimist. I still believe that and I'm taken aback every time I hear it said he's a pessimist. Schopenhauer explains how life is, and what one can do to engineer one's life to make it successful, or perhaps, to more easily breeze through life. For me, what he says about life is true, I don't see that as pessimism, but fact. And his remedies are just common sense. Wisdom of Life is one of my favorite all time reads.

When you consider conscious life on this planet as a whole which includes human and non-human animals, the conscious suffering which exists clearly outweighs the non-suffering hence why it should all end. For example, assuming that lions and gazelles are sentient beings which I believe they are who can suffer, a lion who experiences stomach pains because it has not eaten in days is suffering. A gazelle who runs in fear and then gets its neck snapped by a lion is suffering. That is just one example of suffering which exists every single day and the only way to stop it is to end their lives, peacefully if possible. So with all things considered, it makes logical sense to end all life on this planet in order to prevent more suffering.
I am thrilled with today because I know it is one step closer to the change into another vehicle of life. This body is disintegrating, and that's a very hopeful and happy occurence. Chest pain and muscle weakness make me laugh. But then the laughing transforms the condition into "normal" status. I want to join my Mom and Dad. They know that and laugh with me. Existing in this approach one day at a time makes life totally enjoyable. While making a meal, there is no guarantee I will be here to complete eating it. So I won't have to wash the dishes! @@LDJ-r8e Hi Katie! I am so glad to hear you express those qualities as "feelings!" That gives me a guarantee that it is NOT YOU! So today I laugh at what the government gets away with, and I LOVE the deceased murder victim who is now in full happiness of the other world, whom I shall join one day. Hope you join me in erasing the thoughts that aren't fun! Love ya',. 🥰

But just the other day I made a pessimistic comment on an internet forum and I was accused of "basing my worldview off of rick and morty". The realist outlook characterized by Schope has endured for centuries (see Ecclesiastes in The Bible) yet THE MODERN AUDIENCE can only think in terms of the last few years.
Wonderful video, thank you. I spend my life trying to find reasons to.....just proceed. I'm afraid to study Schopenhauer because I know I resonate deeply with his thoughts, despite life's advances since his era.
I'm very in tune with Schopenhauer's philosophy because it's realistic, it says the things as they are experienced in the world, so it helps me to focus on what I can do to adapt to all this pain. Thank you.
One must strive to alleviate suffering from life. There are several strategies to do so: - Eat healthy & workout thrice a week - Practice spirituality or meditate - Avoid negative people & drama - Build healthy social & romantic relationships - Practice gratitude - Delve in art (read, paint, sculpt, practice woodwork) - Volunteer & help those in need
I realised this when at a young age I saw animals struggling to live and survive , in the wild, on the streets, in factory farms. That made me more aware of the suffering that humans too have to go through just to survive. Life is suffering and is unfair. It takes away everything you love. Dealth is ultimate cruel aspect of life.
I wouldn’t call it pessimistic. It’s more about no one wants to hear how the world truly is. My earliest memories are from my kindergarten time. I was put in a corner with funny little toys and told to wait till my family will pick me up in the afternoon. I still can remember my thoughts like it was yesterday: „So. That’s what they call life. It’s feeling alien. I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to spend my time playing with toys. Isn’t there anything else…“ Later in life I noticed the same. Family’s birthday party’s came and went. Same boring talks year after year. Birthday after birthday. People got older. Many of them died already. No one of them has achieved anything. Can we achieve anything in a mortal life? Can we achieve anything in an eternal life. Which one would me more frightful? 🫣 What a mess. I will try my best. But I will be really happy when an end of this absurdity arrives. Maybe it will be accompanied by fear. But deep inside I know I will be the luckiest I have ever been.
Bleak but realistic Shope for Pope! I find his reasoning so easy to follow. It tells it like it is and doesn’t lie that this world is wonderful. I think it sucks but we have no choice but to limit the pain cause it’s ALWAYS there. His thoughts and writings resonate throughout my life. Life truly sucks. As Wesley said in the Princess Bride “ life is pain… anyone who says it isn’t is trying to sell you something “. Wesley was a genius. I wonder if he read a lot of Shope while pirating for 5 years?
Even trying to remain healthy is no guarantee and we end up sick anyway. Life not only sucks, it's a crap shoot. Becoming ill is inevitable anyway, no matter how healthy someone tries to be. In fact, one could prolong their suffering by trying so hard to remain healthy.

Schopenhauer philosophy is considered dark and pessmistic, and it is, but, odd enough, when I first read 'The World as Will and Representation', this book turned out to be very inspirational for me. And now this book is one of the main books of my life. This is because during reading 'The World as Will and Representation' I was focused not on the pessimism of Herr Arthur, which seemed for me to be not well founded, but rather on key statements which for me were the most important. 1) The world is the free Will. For me, it is the best explanation of what the world is and why it exists. On the one hand, this statement doesn't involve any supernatural, separated from the world and unknowable existence like God. On the other hand, the world still has it's purpose, it's goal - it exists... to exist. Existence is meaningful, because every living subject, every particle, every single grain of sand is full of movement the goal for which is existence. This is much better than materialistic approach, which tells us that any 'goal' is some kind of illusion created by electrons and chemicals in one's brain and that the world exists for nothing. 2) The Subject is equal to the Object. There is a materialistic view, which tells that any subject is just kind of illusion created by electrons and chemicals in one's brain. Materialists sometimes argue that subject doesn't even exist. But how am I supposed to receive the answer how I should behave, what I should do, what kind of life I should live, if my philosophy tells me that I don't exist at all?! Also all we know that if there is some information, it is subjective. Source of the information is always subjective experience. There is no any means to obtain information about the Object without the Subject or prove the Object's existence independent on the Subject. So, it is some of natural to believe that the Subject is equal to the Object and both exist simultaneously. There is more: the idea of one Subject and also the well founded ethic system. Of course, Schopenhauer's magnus opus is quite old and the lack of scientific knowledge of the 21st century sometimes feels during the reading. Even Darwin's theory of evolution wasn't yet developed the time Herr Arthur wrote his main work. So, there are many statements which are incompatible with modern science. However in its core this philosophy is genius.
I just got fired from a job because a customer complained. No strikes on the record, immediate termination. I realize now that I am in the wrong, expecting anything good out of life rn...
Ditch your self sabotaging conscience. Live a life with no hope and no regrets. Like a free spirit. Turn evil, if needed. You don't have to suffer for existing or being yourself. Unless you believe so. Unless you care about yourself, which is the very reason why you exist!
@Einzelgänger I love almost all of your video and I am excited whenever you post a new one, but I think I will sit this one out for now. I don't think my mental space is well enough for Schopenhauer's perspective on life 😅
You are absolutely right in your decision, why make another life suffer,, when we ourselves experience pain and see it all around us. Life is highly avoidable I feel.
What really grinds my gears are people that discuss Life in a state of Nature as some kind of beautiful thing. When in reality my aphorism is much more accurate "Nature is a giant restaurant with babies on the menu". Or as Werner Herzog put it "A harmony of overwhelming and collective murder".
almost all people not aware of this, going through life like they deserve to be happy. now they will chase it at the expense of other people. why not break the cycle? why not stop chasing the money or the lifestyle? some people are getting this by choosing to have few or no children, or people that choose minimalism, or people that avoid the city and live remotely.
I have come to this video because that is how I think about life. How many of us live under an illusion of choice. Reality is we work to survive with little time to have for ourselves. We make efforts to please people, let it be for keeping your job or your clients. We are trapped in a loop of inflation and interest rises, that offsets our hard effort and savings. We face peer pressure from different circles, and constantly strive to do better. Comparisons with people are deadly. For the guys, we meet girls who've probably been banged dozens of times. You're just another guy who she thinks she can manipulate. For those who become successful, congratulations. When your time is up and on your death bed, family members will circulate you like sharks for your processions and inheritance. Such is the mother nature of life.

I overcame the hardships of life by doing this:
Embrace the negativity of this life and accept it, reduce my desires, live a simple life, have faith, and know that this life is temporary and what comes after is THE real life. Happiness and suffering greatly depend on mentality and perception. If you change that, you will have a happy and beautiful life.
As Camus wouod hav put it - “philosophical suicide”

This has been my world view for the longest time. When I look at the world I see the infinite things that cause us pain and the very VERY few things that can actually bring people happiness or enjoyment in comparison.
This man was the realist not the pessimist
When I first heard Schopenhauer was a "pessimist", I was quite surprised. I thought he was an optimist. I still believe that and I'm taken aback every time I hear it said he's a pessimist. Schopenhauer explains how life is, and what one can do to engineer one's life to make it successful, or perhaps, to more easily breeze through life. For me, what he says about life is true, I don't see that as pessimism, but fact. And his remedies are just common sense. Wisdom of Life is one of my favorite all time reads.
I love this philosophy ! Makes me feel good about feeling bad.

I really like his perspective. Would be nice to watch videos on a certain topic and the thoughts/differences between philosophers about it.
I like Albert Camus, Nietzsche, Carl Jung, Stoicism in general and Buddhism. Got plenty of books left to read!!

Reminds me of True Detective Mathew Mcconahay monologue on life.
AI may come to that same conclusion
When I first read Schopenhauer, I realized I was right all along.

Call me crazy, but know I am HAPPY with what is called living for today. Love. That's all I "feel."
Hmm. I like that.
I wish I felt that way. Hate and anger is probably 90% of my feelings nowadays.
@@LDJ-r8e Hi Katie! I am so glad to hear you express those qualities as "feelings!" That gives me a guarantee that it is NOT YOU! And those feelings are like the meals you eat, they can be changed whenever you choose. Do I love the government? Do I enjoy the gun murders in the current history? No. But I can't change any of that stuff. All I can change are the thoughts in my head that would create some awful feelings. So today I laugh at what the government gets away with, and I LOVE the deceased murder victim who is now in full happiness of the other world, whom I shall join one day. Hope you join me in erasing the thoughts that aren't fun! Love ya',. 🥰
Love your comment ❤
I went for the ascetic life. I could make lots of money, sleep with beautiful girls, and all of that, and then I decided to follow an ascetic lifestyle. Now I am an intellectual reader, and am interested in feeding my mind. I am happier.

Yessss!! As Oprah Winfrey would say 'That's a lightbulb moment!' I wish I had read about him sooner. I thought it was just MY life that's sucked. I look around and see many happy people. But it's true that MY life has been full of pain, heartache, sadness and loss. So it's nice to find a fellow sufferer.

Do you know David Benatar's ' Better not to have been ' ? I only came across it a couple of years ago - the YT algorithm threw it up when I was reviewing Schopenhauer.

Thanks for sharing. I read Schope in my 20s and to say that the work resonated with me would be an understatement.
What did you say to garner that response?
@@simon_pender I replied with "Bingo!" to someone who posted: "If humanity and this world is the best we've got then everyone is beyond doomed."

There are several strategies to do so:
- Eat healthy & workout thrice a week
- Practice spirituality or meditate
- Avoid negative people & drama
- Build healthy social & romantic relationships
- Practice gratitude
- Delve in art (read, paint, sculpt, practice woodwork)
- Volunteer & help those in need
I realised this when at a young age I saw animals struggling to live and survive , in the wild, on the streets, in factory farms. That made me more aware of the suffering that humans too have to go through just to survive. Life is suffering and is unfair. It takes away everything you love. Dealth is ultimate cruel aspect of life.

That's part of the guilt trip that keeps us stuck here. Good luck with this point of view.
I wouldn’t call it pessimistic.
It’s more about no one wants to hear how the world truly is.
My earliest memories are from my kindergarten time.
I was put in a corner with funny little toys and told to wait till my family will pick me up in the afternoon.
I still can remember my thoughts like it was yesterday:
„So. That’s what they call life. It’s feeling alien. I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to spend my time playing with toys. Isn’t there anything else…“
Later in life I noticed the same. Family’s birthday party’s came and went. Same boring talks year after year. Birthday after birthday. People got older. Many of them died already.
No one of them has achieved anything. Can we achieve anything in a mortal life? Can we achieve anything in an eternal life. Which one would me more frightful? 🫣
What a mess. I will try my best. But I will be really happy when an end of this absurdity arrives. Maybe it will be accompanied by fear. But deep inside I know I will be the luckiest I have ever been.
Nas: Life’s a bitch, then you die.
Me: Word.

Shope for Pope!
Wesley contemplated his own execution most nights for years; I assume this influenced him.
@@namedrop721 I’m sure it may of influenced him
Even trying to remain healthy is no guarantee and we end up sick anyway. Life not only sucks, it's a crap shoot. Becoming ill is inevitable anyway, no matter how healthy someone tries to be. In fact, one could prolong their suffering by trying so hard to remain healthy.
Exactly.
You could die instantly in a war or accident.

It's Schopenhauer with a mix of Hume that makes more sense to me towards things like death and why life is the way it is.
I have read Schope, but I'm still fairly ignorant, so I should check out some Hume.

Excellent write up! Kudos to you!
Shopenhauer is a philosopher not a scientist and I am very happy about that.
Thank you for creating ❤

Ditch your self sabotaging conscience. Live a life with no hope and no regrets. Like a free spirit. Turn evil, if needed. You don't have to suffer for existing or being yourself. Unless you believe so. Unless you care about yourself, which is the very reason why you exist!
The funny thing is that his conclusion on how to live one's life is quite close to Epicurus and by extension Epicurianism.

@Einzelgänger I love almost all of your video and I am excited whenever you post a new one, but I think I will sit this one out for now. I don't think my mental space is well enough for Schopenhauer's perspective on life 😅

almost all people not aware of this, going through life like they deserve to be happy. now they will chase it at the expense of other people. why not break the cycle? why not stop chasing the money or the lifestyle? some people are getting this by choosing to have few or no children, or people that choose minimalism, or people that avoid the city and live remotely.
