    Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach. Admission is free! Not many people know about it though. It's like a botanical garden with only California Native species from around the state. They have a various ecosystems like the desert, redwood forest, etc. Things you wouldn't expect in newport. Also, in the spring they have a butterfly house.

    Nice! I'm in Texas but grew up in O.C. I lived in Huntington Beach all my time there. Our family are pioneers of HB and Grandpa having farmed there as early as 1910 and in the Segerstrom area also. What memories!

    I was born in Orange County (Mission Viejo) back in 1977. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see these things, since my family moved to North Carolina (Cherry Point) when I was just a baby. My dad is now a retired Marine, (but back then), when the Marines transferred you to ANY base, you had no choice. You had to go - no ands, ifs or buts!
    So today, I'm living in a travel trailer at a campground in Virginia (Chesapeake) as broke as the Ten Commandments! No way I can make it back out to California, with the cost of living and all.

    One of my favorite hidden gems is Blackstar canyon. It makes you wonder if Walter White is up in those hills behind the electric fences and armed patrols that drive frequently through there. If you look at google earth, there is a large structure up in the hills above Blackstar. Along with the overly protected private land, Blackstar has many stories and myths of being haunted and the sight of an Indian Massacre. There are vehicles rusting off the road and abandoned houses back in the canyon, which add to the eerie-ness.

      Site*

    • @ExploreAlways
      @ExploreAlways  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! The area gets its name from the Black Star Coal Mining Comoany which operated until the early 1900's. In 1831, local ranchers massacred a band of Shoshone Indians who stole horses. It was the last documented SoCal Native American Massacre. It would make for an interesting mini doc!

      I grew up near blackstar canyon and rumor had it that the KKK would have congregations in the woods. So that place terrified me!

      Never Stop Exploring If you do come, we have a city all the way at the bottom of our county called Garberville. Do not go there. and be safe if/when exploring the woods as we have growers deep in the woods, so go somewhere like Arcata. I hope this doesn’t scare you off. I’m sorry I forgot to tell you, I’ve lived here my whole life and forget sometimes. The history of Humboldt and the atmosphere is something you won’t get anywhere else.
