      Michelle Yuen it depends on soil temperature and light; google for general.

      @@tonyalewis9053 Every other seed company does it. Baker Creek does not. Who wants to look up 75 seed DTH? And if WE can google for general info, why can't Baker's Creek??? Ridiculous!

    The fall garden is the best time to plant all kinds of veggies in Arizona since our springs are so short and our summers really put a a number on many veggies. I know some gardeners that only plant a fall garden. I agree; timing is the most important factor. I didn't know that you should add 2 weeks to days to maturity. I'll be sure to do that. I'm honestly surprised that northerners don't plant fall gardens. I can't imagine life without a nice crunchy carrot to finish off the long hot summer.

      Fall gardens are my favorites. I hate watering things so fall is great. I don't see any of my neighbors plant fall and winter gardens and it seems odd to me also.

    Another way to start brassicas and beets and other cool season crops is on the north side of a tree where they get direct early morning and evening sun, and ideally filtered light through the canopy. Deciduous trees work best, or very tall herbaceous stuff.

    I don't remember the last time I planted a Fall garden. 100 degree heat just kills.
    We'll be installing shade cloth over the summer garden next year.

      Don't forget: planting quick growing veggies like spinach, lettuce, cilantro and bok choy close to your Frost date means your soil is cooler and wetter.

    Every year, I use August 1 as the (indoor) "start" date for the cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower that will be harvested from the fall garden. Carrots, beets , and radishes are direct-sown a couple weeks later. (My garden is in Zone 8 and has a microclimate for "b".). Most of the time, these dates work well. Once in a while...we get an extremely early hard frost. Kate in Olympia, WA - 8/5/2019.

      Do you have air conditioning or are the indoor temperaturas sufficient.

    • @TalkingThreadsMedia
      @TalkingThreadsMedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mr. Jones. Yes, we have air conditioning in our house -- set at 70 degrees F. For our area, August is much too hot outdoors for us to start new seedlings for fall crops. Hope this helps. Good luck to you. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA. -- 9/26/2019.

    If you are in the deep south plants grow faster in the Fall, if I recall. It's the end of Spring into the early summer, then it's almost too hot to grow much of anything, then there's a good spurt of growth in the Fall. If we could mellow down July and August here I think we could get away with growing more things and getting double harvests without much hassle. It would be awesome if I could build a geothermally cooled greenhouse for those blistering, muggy Summer months and to overwinter. I hear that setting it 6-8ft into the ground will help keep it cooler, as well as installing underground vents to bring in cooled air. I wonder if that would work here in Georgia. Yeah, fatigue is a problem in the Summer here. Try gardening in 96 degree full sun with humidity in the 70's or 80's. It's brutal.
