    BLACKPINK producer is Teddy Park, a head producer at YG Ent. He's written and produced all their music since they first became a group in 2016. He's like a 5th member of the group :D . He also produced songs for a previous YG Ent. legendary girl group 2ne1 and worked with “Kings of K-Pop” Big Bang, creating many Kpop hits.

    the YG party ending is a hallmark of their label, you will see it in most songs from the label.
    If you want a feel of the more Korean type music (as in not catered to the west (mean that in a good way)), you could give AKMU a listen, also from YG but they have a more non-western structure to many of their songs, they are huge in Korea but not very well-known outside (that is not entirely true, they are more well-known than most acts, but still they are by no means big internationally).
    would recommend
    for ballad type go with "How can I love the heartbreak, you're the one I love" beautiful track swept Korean charts in 2019
    for more upbeat go with "Dinosaur" about tax collectors and poverty
    for more wacky try "how people move" about a Childs wonder at how movement works
    all are produced by themselves, its a sibling duo :)
    and they all lyrically make sense, but very hard to translate as they were never meant to be translated (they use a lot of proverbs and such that are unique to the culture, so really hard to translate, unless you find a really good interpreter)

      @@thebillboard500club YG is just the label, in Kpop much is dependent on label, as you mentioned about SM, usually a style or vibe is persistent through a labels different acts, at least their Idol acts. I mostly listen to YG acts so know most about them, but each label has its own twist on the kpop formula, and o course the individual acts as well. The non-idol side of Korean music is also very interesting, AKMU is a non-idol act signed with an Idol label. could mention many more, but see if you like it, and me and others can recommend more :)

    11:59 contrast is basically the core concept of blackpink. Just like their group name, black being associated with more hardcore, dark energy while pink for girliness and prettiness, the group and the inhouse producer want to create music that consists of components that oftentimes and feelings that appear to be the polar opposite.

  • @-insert-
    @-insert- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Blackpink employs several formulas. HYLT and KTL use the same formula. Forever Young and Don't Know What to Do another formula while Kick It and See U Later another formula still. When you factor in the 'Black' and the 'Pink' concepts you end up with a very wide variety of sounds and songs. I'm not even mentioning the outliers like Crazy Over You which add yet another dimension to their music.

  • @AmadanMath
    @AmadanMath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    A lot of Blackpink's songs do follow a formula (for a simple reason, their producer Teddy knows that it _works_ ); as you heard, KTL and DDU-DU DDU-DU are structurally very similar. But Pretty Savage does the opposite thing (don't want to spoil too much, but you'll know what I meant :D ), Stay is a whole another vibe, You Never Know is a ballad, to name just a few examples. But you are very correct that genre-mixing and contrast is one of mainstays of kpop.
    I don't think it is anywhere as evident as in Dreamcatcher title songs, that seamlessly switch between ethereal and metal, ballad and EDM. Take Boca, for example.

    BP's lead singles all follow the same structure and formula. Build up intro, verse, rap, melodic prehook, hook drop, usually another rap that leads into the pre-hook again, then the hook once more and we go into a bridge but the song ends on an outro, usually explosive and/or anthemic.
    You'll see this formula pretty much in all of the artists under the YG label (except AKMU, a more acoustic, singer-songwriter bro-sis duo).
    Which makes sense since YG tends to work exclusively with in-house producers. If the artist is a self-producing group, they get their training from the same producers and so there's a lot of overlap in sound and style. A lot of people either love it or hate it, but it's what makes YG artists stand out from the industry.
    Their b-sides tend to have more variety in their structures, so check those out too.

    *"It's the contrast that creates the creativity"*
    I agree! This is what I love about k-pop and what makes k-pop different from Western music, along with choreo and expensive mvs. But I think this is also why K-pop is not wide spread in the West. I think many of these people have a hard time accepting contrast. Another thing I noticed is that many people in the West are not open to the fashion. In K-pop, we have guys wearing skirts, crop tops, and make-up which is deemed in the West as "feminine." But they can pull off these androgynous looks without insecurities. They really are a step ahead in Asia.
    BTW, I love the editing of your videos!! The words are bold and the intro and outro are the perfect length!
    I already know my suggestion are on your list so I can't wait and really look forward to them!

      This is what I dug about the song. Intro, Jennie raps, Lisa raps, Jisoo sings, Rose sings, chorus, Jennie/Lisa rap, Rose sings, Jisoo sings, chorus, new sound to the bridge, then chorus again but bigger. It's simple but with lots of change to keep poking your ears in a new way which is great for replay value. I remember when it released too, people said the chorus felt like it was missing something, but the way I always took it was that it was building anticipation cuz the final chorus felt like the one people were waiting for the whole song. Even how it drops at the end bothered people but I thought it was great how the first 2 chorus were like an 8, then they took the energy to the 10 you were expecting the whole time and then went straight to 0...it was like a deep exhale lol

    Not disputing anything you’ve said, as you demonstrate pretty keen insight: but it should be noted that many of the similarities between “How you like that” and “Kill this Love” are intentional.
    More so than any other Blackpink song/video, “How you like that” had a specific purpose: to thank fans for their patience and loyalty and to herald Blackpink’s return after a long absence. It the 1st track on their only full album. “Kill this Love” was the last release before that, over a year prior.
    There are several visual, lyrical, and musical references/call backs to their earlier works.
    I thought you might be interested in the context.

  • @kelvinzhang36

    Please stop saying the beginning and ending are always the same formula. It’s their concept, it’s BLACKPINK theme, it’s iconic, it’s powerful, it’s their signature sound. Obviously many other groups have done the same but when people hear this type of music/structure, they automatically know it’s BLACKPINK. Thus, that is their brand image. They’re not doing it repeatedly in their songs because they ran out of ideas
    It’s just they focus their craft more on the in-between parts. As you listened, they incorporated different types of sounds, instruments, beats switchup, the drop, the blasting addicting chorus, the rap flow and everything. They do it so differently and creatively everytime that’s why their music attracts people and they’re the most successful

    HYLT, Kill this Love, Ddu-du Ddu-du, Boombayah, maybe some other too have a very similar structure... But... It works, so can you blame them? 😅 Those are their most listened songs and I also love them, so it's a winning formula and they have no reason not to use it. They also have different styles of songs, even much different, so there is something for everyone if you are not into this style. That's why Blackpink is so huge worldwide. And by the way, the fact that they found a winning formula doesn't mean that everyone can make a banger using it. What makes it work is their genial producer and most of all, the girls themselves with their voices, dances, fashion and attitude.

I love the contrast between the minimalistic electronic style of the "next level" part and the jazzy bridge which is more vocally centered. They somehow combine all these different style to fit together but not so smooth in order to still get that jarring, exciting effect when it switches up! Also, in the bridge, its aespa's aes singing. I enjoy those switch ups and the roller coaster ride the production team (Teddy & the gang) takes you on. Couple that with the talent, swag, beauty, and down to earth humbleness of these ladies it’s a home run.

    They are far from typical Kpop..They're more than that... that's why they have a very large fan base all across the world. I know that Every group has their own image...but BLACKPINK is always been different since their debut cause It's how these woman👸👸👸👸 and their fans😇 get into their own hype🤡. This mean if i say 'Blackpink' chances are fan will picture more than just a group , they'll picture individuals moments and movements... Finally🎁 ,these 4 girl quickly turn to Untouchable World wide icon🏅🌎

    Blackpink fans being abit protective but honestly as a kpop music fan I really do think that all their title tracks give the same vibe... Generally people say it's YG sound, or SM sound, or JYP sound,, which is very logical especially for YG because Teddy produces all their label artists music... I really enjoy your analysis on kpop Thank you:) I listen to next level so much these days

    I feel like BLACKPINK's producer Teddy perfected the BLACKPINK's formula with Pretty Savage. It doesn't have an official music video but you could react to the "lyric videos" available on youtube. There's also a performance video with a band playing!
    One of the most interesting BLACKPINK song in terms of production is Crazy Over You.

    Thanks for the reaction. As in writing, as Vince Gilligan has said, always steal from the best, and Teddy Park takes it from the best across all genres and cultures, and the genius is in blending it beautifully together to perfectly suit the talents of his BP crew. Rose has stated Rihanna is an inspiration for her. If you ever get to BP's MV "Stay" you will recognize the Taylor Swift influence. When you get to "Whistle" you will see a very interesting transition from Rap to Country/Acoustic guitar, twice. So you will find some variability beyond their Super Hit songs, but that variability doesn't get them billion viewed MV's like their formula songs do. Once you get exposed to BP, and BTS and other groups that infuse their songs with so many genres blended beautifully together, you find standard American pop kind of boring. And Rihanna may be an influence, but Rihanna's producers don't bring in the Middle Eastern and Indian Bollywood influences blended with rap and marching band sounds, and Rihanna and her producers don't dare cross into Country, but BP does. The only American who comes close to delving into different genres, although not in the same song, is Billie Eilish, whose music I love. Rihanna and for that matter Beyoncé, are among the greatest in the history of their genres, their wonderful, beautiful, but relatively speaking, narrow genres.

    from Umu's other interviews with kpop producers. they all say the same thing. how they start seeing this kpop formula that they use for the music and why kpop is liked for the music by so many fans. Also many times we hear a song and were like that is such an sm song or that sounds like an exo song or this is such a blackpink song, the kpop artists keep experimenting until they find their sound and its like they suddenly own it. One producer was talking about going to SM camp for the first time and how they showed him taemin danger as an example of what kpop is like and hes like it reminds me of Michael Jackson but thats where kpops largest influence comes from the 90's early 2000 american music production style.

    Thank you for your insight! Learned alot from your videos. It would be great if you can react to Super Junior( also from SM entertainment) songs like lo siento, I think I, which have Latin influences and collaborated with leslie grace. If you can also check out their latest comeback "house party", i think you will be surprised in the middle of the song lol. Also recommend super clap, devil, black suit. Their biggest hits sorry sorry, mr simple (although they are older titles from 2009-2011) I also recommend TVXQ(chance of love, something, spellbound where there is a small part that's very similar to aespa's next level :D) shinee and f(x) discography (more experimental sounds from SM ent).

    • @peacelovevegankpop
      @peacelovevegankpop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After watching Adams videos, I think I figured out why Superhuman by NCT 127 is criminally underrated!!
      Superhuman doesn't have that universal hook like BP does in both Kill This Love and How You Like That. Therefore it's not a song that someone can listen to once and start singing along to. Instead, what makes it a masterpiece is the complex song structure, the different vibes you get from each section, the intricate layers, and the melody. I think you need a good ear to appreciate Superhuman! And i personally love this style more than simple catchy songs because it will never get old no matter how many times you listen to it!

    I recommend “The Stealer” by a group called The Boyz. They are newer groups that’s on rising currently. The song is not really like most Kpop structures. It’ll be fun to see you break down that song!

  • @Rana_93
    @Rana_93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Blackpink's songs structure is their main signature, you know it's a blackpink song when you listen, mainly in their Black concept with lots of drops, they come strong with the rap, the lyrics and a really catchy chorus. Their Pink side has different structure. And they have songs that mix both concepts and those ones are different, you don't know what to expect.
