    I used to field trial mine, wish I still did and had ability to do so, but my 2 year old pet BC Winston with a lot of instinct for this thoroughly enjoyed your video. You’re 150% correct in your description of the peace you get from working with them. I miss it on sheep with them, but thankful they’ve been my constant companions since 1980 except for a few short years in the military. Their heart and motivation helps us to understand and better grow our own. They’re truly a blessing in their incredible companionship and what they bring to our lives.

    As someone who has worked in the human field of psychology it was refreshing to hear someone talk about building a relationship and taking ownership for your own behaviour impacting on each other. So different and healthier than the cry of blaming a dog and punitive training.

    My border collie was scared of the sheep and was bullied by the other dogs on the farm, until we adopted him.

    Loved this thank you. Great that you mention bing sensitive to not overworking the border collie. In spite of their athletic build they are still prone to joint vulnerability if this is not considered regarding the length and intensity of their work.

    Every time my BC heard the whistle he reacted, going to the door into the next room, all excited. He is from working stock, I wonder if this alertness to the whistle is inherited. My other dogs slept right through it.

    Those beautiful dogs remind me of when we were little my mom got a black and white shepherd that the lady said was an Australian shepherd dog throw back because it didn't have the blue eyes etc just black and white.When it was adult, it ended up pregnant accidentally by a giant black Great Dane. The puppy's were GIANT balls of fur and looked like Newfys. They were awesome!

    Magnificent dogs! I love how all the Border Collies work with a low-head position, like lions in the wild stalking prey.
    Afterall that is what "herding" is all about for these dogs; with the human withholding nature's natural end to the stalking ...the "attack".

      these dogs have the cat shoulder development. that's why when they run they're low to the ground and the shoulder blades are higher than the shoulder level. mine does appx 47 klms an hr. and thats with a metal plate in his hip on the iced river during the winter. as a pup at 14 mths he was running 53 klms an hr. catch squirells or a rabbit is play for them. they turn on a dime like a cheetah same body resemblance on the muscle tone as they maneuver.

      @Clement Proulx - thank you for your response. I always appreciate gaining more information about this breed. I am fascinated by the sheer will of intelligence this breed displays, and the power of their agility - for even the dog who isn't working or doing anything of purpose - they are just dogs, and it's wonderful!
      I frequently work around law enforcement K9's (photographing them), and I am always digging for more information from the handlers and trainers as to why/how they do what they do - and how/why they do it so darn well! The US Border Patrol have cadaver canines, who can detect remains at the surface of the water, while the remains are up to 150ft below the surface. I am also intrigued of how when drug smugglers intent on bringing drugs across the borders, put them into harsh smelling natural or human created products, believing the drug's scent is masked. The handlers tell me the dog does not smell "mixes" as we humans do, and described it as if a pot of chili is cooking on the stove, we smell chili - the dog smells the peppers, onions, tomato sauce, hamburg individually, never to have the pleasure of smelling "chili". Also, when illegals from our Southern border attempt to cross hidden in the trunk, or the back seat, or even under the hood with the engine, the K9 at the checkpoint knows someone is hiding, while at the same time, he knows the driver, and all passengers sitting in plain view are not the criminal - it's as if they can count smells, and then can count the smell of "hiding". It's not necessarily "fear" they smell, since training for this has the canine's beloved handler hiding, waiting to be found by his dog - there is no "fear" displayed, but there is "hiding" displayed/transmitted outward which the canine is able to scent. It's a wonderful thing, these animals - and man is very lucky that they want to be our best friends.

      my friend you just walked into a new territory. border collies can distinct certain individual scents better than any other species of dog but their inheritant genetics does not slow down enough for them to work as police k nines unless personal training of time and reward is involved. the sheppard is a cheaper and shorter term answer. THE COLLIE IS EVEN SMARTER THAN GREAT APES. Now here is something very interesting I have a new foundland mix breed that displays unusual talents in water. Newfoundlands are water dogs that display unsuall talent and remarkability in water rescue. They can tow 5 adults in 15 ft waves and still take you kid for a 1 mile walk after dinner. unbeilabvle dogs in water rescue. also very remarkable in instinctive home protection. Mine put people to the door that were not very nice people.also look up a dog named shemp a border collie that was famous for starting that low predator gaze and very fascinating about this dog he is responsible for possibly siring 80 to 90 % of the border collies today. His responsiility for the tactics of herding and effectiveness and is also long distant relative to 90%of the border collies of today..

      That low head position the dogs adopt is seen as a threatening posture by the sheep and encourages them to move away from the Collies.

    I don't know about that. My border collie's grand dam was a working collie. I keep looking under my chair every time he blows the whistle. Mica is just sitting there completely chilled out. Hehehe His dam is very calm too.

    Could you please entertain a question from Florida in the US? I have a 5- month old BC mix which was a rescue from a local shelter, she is very smart, quick and willing to please. Can you suggest a job or training that might be challenging for her, we live on a few acres, have 2 other dogs, they all get along very nicely. We have nothing around to herd, therefore my query. Thank you for the beautiful video, love watching your beauties out there on the hillside doing what they were bred to do! Cheers!! MM

    Border Collie is very scaring when it is working as sheepdog! I have seen it before. They seemed to hunt the sheeps!

    • @PlainsPup
      @PlainsPup 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The herding behavior of dogs comes from the hunting behavior of wolves.

    • @user-vr6kj3cw6d
      @user-vr6kj3cw6d 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Sorry, should I write like this: They seemed to hunt the sheeps! like wolves!
      I thought everyone in this world should know dog comes from wolves... Clearly you didn't think so. Thank you~

    • @PlainsPup
      @PlainsPup 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weiliang Zhang Yes, dogs are domesticated wolves. Of course, the main difference between wolf hunting behavior and dog herding behavior, is that wolves kill the ungulates they are pursuing, while dogs relocate them for people.

    • @user-vr6kj3cw6d
      @user-vr6kj3cw6d 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I was not born in country, have no chance to see the sheepdog at work! I was just wondered that they work really like wolves and that is scaring! Scaring is what I feel and what want to share. I know what you said.

    • @PlainsPup
      @PlainsPup 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Karla Niblock All the evidence points to domestic dogs coming from Eurasian wolves. Their scientific name (Canis lupus familiaris) recognizes them as a subspecies of gray wolf (Canis lupus). Other subspecies include the common wolf (C. lupus lupus), Arabian wolf (C. lupus arabs), Iranian wolf (C. lupus pallipes), Arctic wolf (C. lupus arctos), Great Plains wolf (C. lupus nubilis), Mexican wolf (C. lupus baileyi), and so on. The red wolf and eastern wolf used to be considered subspecies of C. lupus but are now thought to be separate species. Other related Canis species are the coyote, golden jackal, and Ethiopian wolf. But as for dogs, they are genetically so closely related to gray wolves, and are fully interfertile with them, so they are now considered the domestic form of the gray wolf.

      Because you can’t train herd mentality out of the entire herd. Hence the dogs having a job. Working dogs are an absolutely critical part of animal husbandry and very loyal.

      Without docking, manure can stick, accumulate, and then flies lay eggs. They become maggots that consume all organic material including the sheep's flesh. It is terrible. Dock tails!

    • @sheepwithcorpsepaint8710
      @sheepwithcorpsepaint8710 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use a special rubber band to dock a lamb, it isn't cruel at all. But most of my sheep aren't docked, only the older ewes.
