Jeff Daniels is one of the sharpest actors...ever. His performances throughout _News Night_ were some of his finest. Some of the finest performances of all time. One of the best shows...ever. Wish there were more of its caliber.

He's a mediocre actor who has "been" Atticus Finch for 6 months now. A little of Harper Lee's command of language is his by osmosis. His Newsroom character provides the insights. The aspiration to be a hero is his. And he knows that to be general in America by audience reaction.
So his getting his statement in bang on target is not surprising.
What surprises and disappoints me is that apparently, from these comments, many folks are still hiding from the truth.

So glad I found this video and that quote. It answered a question I have long held. Last year I took a trip to The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. There were pictures of lynchings with thousands of people in attendance in a few of them - often with children in attendance. Many people were smiling and I had no answer for it. This quote gets me closer to the dynamic of understanding at least some of it.

In situations like these we look at the reason for the protest in the first place. Are there people who take advantage of the group to have license to do what they want? Sure. But make no mistake that protesting hundreds of generations of slavery and systemic oppression by the American legal system in an act of conscience.

I'm always cautious with actors because it's their job to play a character. It's hard, sometimes, to tell what they really believe. But Daniels seems to pick roles that speak to his values. This discussion reminds me so much of the Jeff Daniels we saw in the now infamous Newsroom clip and I can only imagine it's what he brings to Atticus Finch. It's so refreshing to see him speak with candor about his own views with the same passion.
I don't hero worship. I have my role models, but I've learned to take from them what I feel to be good and inspiring and be cautious with the rest. Because we're all human. And if you've been around long enough (and it doesn't take long), you find at least a few of your heroes to also be monsters. But from what's in that clip, there's a lot of good to be found in Jeff Daniels.
+ Terence Clark I agree and I also caution because it easy to be duped; to quote "You can fool part of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you can't fool all the people all the time" A. Lincoln Lincoln is also recorded as saying the republican party and the democratic party change sides ever so often and if anyone wants the whole quote I will look it up and write it down as I have a first copy of the rather huge book of Abraham Lincoln`s State Papers and letters which I read often. @@richardanderson5718 On the "opinions of goodness" many of us oldsters as my many nephews like to call me have lived a life where being good just makes sense. I myself have lived where I never had a child look up at me in fear or puzzlement and they never will. Jeff`s face suggests that he has found the same and we see the same look on Tom Hanks, Gary Sinese, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Eli Manning, even though I think he could use some of his brother Peyton`s sense of humor, but none the less honest and nice like my wife says about me that "I have a nice face" that could use a shave, hint hint.
As far as actors / politics, I applaud Tommy Lee Jones, who never talks politics in public. Someone smart enough to realize they are there to entertain, not educate / instruct / lead.
@@xzqzq I agree in principle, but art makes a statement, be it a painting or a ballet or a movie. So he may not speak to his own politics, I don't know that he can really escape being political. Plus, while I don't agree with celebrity worship, they do hold the public's eyes and ears, which is a powerful platform. I don't blame those who use that platform to advance things they see as good in the world. Like it or not, their opinions hold sway in public opinion and studies have shown it time and time again. I'm not saying I like it or support it. But we'd be naive to deny it.

Fox News and Fox's cartoons don't present the same ideas at all and there's even more distance when we start including NBC, CBS, CNN, NYT, WSP, NYP, WST, now add all the Sinclair owned stations who are like omnipresent (remember when all their local stations presented the same newscast word for word?) and they definitely don't work for democrats lol and add all the so called independent media (don't get me wrong, some of them are great....a lot are just pure propaganda for whatever point of view people working there make money supporting). I know that a lot of Trump supporters believe that CNN is some sort of anti Trump machine but when you actually go read all these anti CNN comments on their YT channel they have nothing to do with the content of the actual video 9 times out of 10 (I say this as an expression, I obviously don't have an actual statistic lol) if you don't believe me go check for yourself seriously and I'm not saying that to argue with you or anything, I think dialogue is great and I have no idea what your opinions are in general so please don't think I'm trying to be confrontational even though things can often easily appear this way on social media. The way I see it, a lot of people in journalism are just holding whatever administration is in place accountable. Let's not forget how CNN, MSNBC and all the others stood by Fox News when Obama tried to get some of their journalists ban of the press briefings a couple of years ago and even look at Shep Smith and even Chris Wallace on Fox News, these guys have been very critical of the Obama administration but they also are of Trump's administration and most importantly they try to serve the truth, not just some propaganda like the likes of Sean Hannity who is pretty much the furthest thing from a journalist. Now, the way I see it, mainstream media do tend to go easier on mainstream politicians. Let's be honest, CNN is far from offering pro Bernie Sanders coverage they clearly like Biden much more......or maybe that's just my feeling, sometimes it's hard to tell.......and that's the saddest part. Feelings shouldn't have a place when it comes to understanding what is going on in the news. Reality is reality truth is truth contrarily to what Giuliani said lol. @@DebiB62 Sorry for this delay. Democracy alone leads to mob rule. Here's a bad example but it makes it clear. There are more whites than blacks. If the majority rules, they, in theory, could vote to make a law that stipulates that blacks should all be slaves of the white population.
Think about our pledge of allegiance. We have a republic. It is a democratic republic because we get to vote freely on someone to represent us in terms of making law. The power is divided over states, counties and cities. All of that dividing up of power helps prevent evil stuff like mentioned above. The electoral college is also useful in this same regard. California gets only their fair share of voting power based on their population. But if they are unbalanced in the conservative versus liberal point of view, they still only get their fair share of representation. Otherwise, their millions of votes silent the votes of smaller states like Idaho. In 2016, the popular vote would have elected Hillary because of California's liberal population. But, CA is limited to only their fair share of representative power as is ID. Representative government is best, although not problem free. That is what a Republic is. If this were a true democracy, there would be no politicians in Washington. The whole population would have to vote on every single law and issue that came up; maybe there would be a voting day every week!! Hope this is clear.

I think American Taliban is probably better. There was definitely some rose coloured lenses during that speech/tirade. Of course we tried to do those, "...great big things...", but it was also done by trampling over the rights of and existence of those either idly in the way or violently quashed for simply trying to exercise a right supposedly enshrined in the constitution or by the civil war.
During that time, at least some of those in power still had some backbone when it mattered; today it hardly even exists simply because all you need to do is pander extreme enough ideology to win that primary in your gerrymandered district to continue your hopefully life-long tenure as an obstructionist politician. Technology and message broadcasting is not the same as it was even 20 years ago, much less back during the golden days of journalism.
This is why I think the American Taliban, while not as dramatic with presentation, is much more relevant and important than the university speech/debate scene.

We need EVERYONE to know: Make sure you are properly registered (same address on ID that they have on the voter roles) so that the goons who are trying to limit participation in the presidential election have no advantage. It is up to us to make sure we have a voice, so make sure you are properly registered!
