What to do if you are affected by the benefit cap

  • There is a cap on the total amount you can receive from the main out-of-work benefits and children’s benefits. Some benefits are not included in the cap calculation, and some people may be exempt from the cap.
    The cap applies across the UK.
    The cap is set at -
    •£350 per week for a single adult with no children
    •£500 per week for a couple or lone parent, regardless of the number of children they have.
    If you are affected by the benefit cap you may be able to apply for a Discretionary Housing Payment from your local council to help with the shortfall in your rent.
