I remember when this so-called "sequel" to the original Wrestlefest came out, all I could think was, what a HUGE disappointment this was, they should have just brought back the ORIGINAL game from 1991.
The wrestling games with the double dragon-ish art style were always my favorites. It would be hard to really duplicate the simplistic charm of those games accurately.
Hey, if you want a console game with a similar art style to WrestleFest, check out the Zen Nippon (AJPW) series for Super Famicom! To me, it's exactly what a home port of WrestleFest should have been: deep move lists, a deeper (timing based) experience than the arcade version, each wrestler having music, an entrance, and all their moves.
I just checked out the PSN Black Friday offerings and saw Double Dragon 4, which looks like DD2 on the NES instead of the arcade. The industry's ability to not give us what we want is incredible.
WWF wrestlefest was one of a kind. it was the best damn imitation amd representation of the WWF at the time that ir was first released!i think the big mistake is that they tried to emulate it instead of improve on it.. plus it was a huge time gap when they tried to follow it up. it held up very well against street fighter 2 in the arcade. the lines were just as long.
20th Century: the best handmade pixel art money could buy. A great roster hyped to the moon, and booked to their strengths. A quarter to play for some quick and shallow thrills. 21st Century: throwing a quick filter over some cheap pre-render frames. A roster mostly sabotaged by aggressively bad booking, in order to keep them in their place. Pay and pay and pay!
Review Fire Pro Wrestling World! I know it's mostly a title for the Japanese, but the game is all about user created characters and every single wrestler from every era dead, alive, animated or virtual has been recreated in the game. People even made EVERY videogame wrestling roster imaginable as downloadable characters on Steam and PS4. And yes, the Double Dragon bros (and everybody else from the games) are in the game as well! So are the Kunio-kun characters, Street Fighter, Tekken, Kinnikuman... If you can dream it, you can make it in this game!
i'd rather see OpenBOR have a Brawler in the style of the GBC game where you could kick ass beat em up style. and in Mugen we can get a Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game sequel that i'm sure many would LOVE at this point.
One thing that bothered me about the animations is the lack of jumping in certain animations. When you look at how the neck breaker, pile-driver, and DDT were animated, then look at the IOS version the original feels more like a move and less like a slideshow of animation.

All that was needed to keep the Exact play & format of the 1st game with additional wrestlers. A tweak or 2 to further smooth the gameplay(& being able to tag at top AND bottom of the ring). BOOM, good to go...👍
I dont dislike Retromania Wrestling but I just cant get into the roster. I would prefer a game done in that style but with all legends characters like in the Legends of Wrestling series. With no CAW I dont wanna be forced to play as guys like Colt Cobana, Jeff Cobb, Brian Myers, Matt Cardona, Zack Saber Jr. I dont care about these guys, sorry. I know there's some legends in there but its not enough. Austin Idol ? No thanks. I know its a indie studio so they couldnt get BIG names and I understand that. Ill just wait for someone to make a similar style game with big names and lots of WWE legends. If it never happens then oh well. Someone cans still make one with a CAW so we can make them.
100% Also, why do so few wrestlers actually have a wrestling name nowadays? Macho Man vs Ultimate Warrior, The Rock vs Stone Cold. Those sound like wrestling matches to me. However, I have no interest in watching some “Andrew Heagly vs Brendan Omatta” match. Those names aren’t even real people but if you told me it was on the card for a WWE PPV I’d believe you. That’s how indistinguishable I find 98% of the roster today.
I never understood how the rockers never made it on wrestlefest especially seeing how during the late 80s and early 90s they were one of the best tag teams in wwe and it they should be in one of the 2k games as a legends pack filled with wrestlers that didn’t make the cut to any game bad news brown,Jesse Ventura,teaxs tornado to name a few!
The problem with WWE Wrestlefest is that it was too polished and too modern day graphics, it's not what people wanted, they wanted the style to be the same as the original WWF Wrestlefest Arcade classic.
We did get a Wrestlefest sequel in a way in the form of WWE All-Stars. It's similar to Wrestlefest in many ways. I'm glad console players got All-Stars intead of Wrestlefest 2. This game looks absolutely terrible, even for a mobile game.

WWE made a huge mistake by going PG, kids would only be interested in watching it if they felt they'd get in trouble if their parents found out, only thing they managed to do is dumb down the brand and start them on the path of destruction that they've yet managed to get off of, WWE was at it's best when it was rated T for Teens and Adults.
What if I loved Wrestlefest AND No Mercy? I was a big WWF fan when Wrestlefest came out. I fell out of it for a while until the Attitude Era started, then a friend pushed a couple non-(current)-wrestling fans to split the cost of Wrestlemania on PPV so we could watch Stone Cold win the world title.. I was back in after that. Played the hell out of all the Aki N64 WCW/WWF games. Always go back to Wrestlefest too though. Awesome game.

I never understood why they rendered the wrestlers and everything in 3D, flattened them to look cel-shaded and then took shots of them in various poses as opposed to hiring a proper 2D artist. Maybe, they thought that recycling SmackDown vs Raw assets would be cheaper and faster...

RetroMania is a true successor to Wrestlefest, I wish the guys were bigger and had more frames of animation. This iOS game was garbage then and shouldn’t have been released. I played it and was immediately depressed. WWE Allstars is probably the closest WWE licensed game akin to Wrestlefest we will ever get.

There's a Double Dragon fangame in OpenBOR that has wrestling characters from WWF Superstars in it.
The art style of the 2012 games was just completely charmless, especially compared with the brilliant style of the original.

Wrestlefest was an addictive game. I still play it on my phone with an emulator. The iOS version was very mediocre.

I had this, it ran too slow and clunky. It was like Molasses. Also the control scheme on the IPAD was dreadful.
