  • Tenore Robusto ANTONIO PAOLI (1871-1946) sings "Dio mi potevi scagliar" from Verdi's Otello on a G & T 78 rpm disc # 025173.
Paoli, who was a giant of a man, had one of the MOST POWERFUL voices of any tenor--- EVER!
What till you hear the CLIMAX of this recording. You'll be astonished. Such passion!
Paoli was known as "The King of Tenors." He is considered the first Puerto Rican to reach international fame in the musical arts.
Throughout his active career, he wanted to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. This never happened as he was prevented for appearing by Enrico Caruso who had great influence with the house's management and board of directors. What Caruso wanted, Caruso got!
In the early days of record-making, singers
were told to step back from the horn when it came to some powerful part of an aria so that the recording diaphragm wouldn't be damaged, or to prevent blasting. As might be expected, Paoli was difficult to record...

Comment : Who was greater, Paoli or Caruso? Depends whom you prefer. Both were great artists.Paoli attended Cruso's funeral and spoke good things about Caruso. Giacomo Lauri Volpi, Tito Schipa considered Paoli a phenomenal voice, without equal. All the crowned heads of Europe choose Paoli as their favorite.
Also he was a superb actor with an impressive stage presence. At 29yrs. old he
sang 6 performances of W. Tell at the Paris Opera 1899.

Vocally, brilliant. Interpretively? He leaves me cold. With all respect due to the crowned heads of Europe, they are not necessarily connoisseurs of vocal talent.

@gmmix Giacomo Lauri Volpi declared on his book Voci Paralelle pg.135:
Paoli and De Muro together with Tamagno constituted the three phenomenal voices
( voci - fenomeno ) per power of vibrations ( squillo ) in the last 50 years.
To find similar voices in the history of singing we have to go back to Tamberlick
    and Duprez.

comp fece il tenore portoricano Antonio Paoli, or e` quarant' anni." Allora erano in augeGrassi, Bassi, Zenatello, Garbin, Maestri, Martinelli, Di Giovanni, Ferrari Fontana, Constantino, oltre a Caruso e a Bonci.

Good. You have a good analytical ear. listen to the diverse color, exploding in emotional extasis of anguish. Then the brutal expansion of the last phrase, overtones of phenomenal squillo.

@bodiloto Giacomo Lauri Volpi shares your opinion.

  • @rupepill
    @rupepill 16 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The description of this gentleman as the greatest Otello well might bring partisan opinions pouring in from the admirers of other singers of this role. Caruso's alleged blocking of Paoli's Metropolitan aspirations seems unlikely, in view of consistently general reports that the amiable Neapolitan enjoyed being on friendly terms with all his tenor colleagues. His pal, the strapping 6'5" Leo Slezak was a literally towering Otello in 1910 at the Met.

Toda Cabeza Real eligio a Paoli.

I'll leave the expert critical judgements to you. My comments on the subject were based on statements reported in a Paoli memoirs, compiled from interviews from longtime friends and colleagues. Your mccormick reference is baffling. If you mean John McCormack, they operated in two altogether different musical worlds, so that any comparison is irrelevant.
Incidentally, I participated in a major Caruso retrospect in 2002 which included memorabilia from Caruso's grandson, who lives near me.

@porsche4277 NO joke but a reality well know by the critics and fans of that era.
Caruso was great, but Paoli's bread & butter roles were in the dramatic heroic repertory: W. Tell, Meyerbeer heroes, Otello, G. Ratclif. Sanson, Marion Del Orme-revival, Le Cid, Lohengrin. They share few roles. Fact: Caruso swear to never sing in Spain because G. Anselmi was the favorite due to musicality and artistic finesse. Caruso make sure his performances never coincided with Paoli's.Paoli never sang Puccini.

One cannot criticise Paoli. Perhaps it is Nationalism or some macho sexual thing - or both. Many, many modern day critics think his singing crude, almost laughable, whilst understanding his success. Paoli has poor intonation, a crude provincial style; his supporters worship him - it is pointless to put such thoughts to paper. The Wikipedia entry is locked, controlled by the Paoli worshippers - it is all very odd. There is no doubt that Paoli was admired and had a successful career; but why?

this is not too bad for Paoli - one of his better efforts. Most of his efforts are wobbly out of tune, pompous and laughable. I'll be shot by the Puerto Rican mafia for saying that.
