Tragic turn of events. He deserved better...but thanks to TH-cam, he continues to sing for the pleasure of thousands of admirers. Thanks for your comment.
@Adrien26able Congratulations, you evaluated the core of Paoli's school of singing. He was trained by his sister Amalia Paoli and Maestro Baldini, a basso. Paoli was a belcanto style trained dramatic tenor. Musicianship, legato, correct use of messa, voce, respect to the libretto and the composer intentions. His was considered a voci phenomini by Giacomo Lauri Volpi.
Too bad he never was at the met or no one would have heard of Caruso like no one heard of him! He has way more power & lungs than Caruso unbelievable!!!!! No wonder he was the King of Tenors!!!
I have the time machine' I put them all together'' and antonio paoli was the king of tenors and the rest they were happy spectators,is no doubt the paoli was the best of all times, just listen good.having a good ear helps, peace and love.
Extraordinary!!!...He sang it with all the legatos...We wouldn't hear that until Mario Del Monaco revived them in the 1950s. Adrien J. Alpendre PhD Tulane University New Orleans, Louisiana
No need to be trashed. If Caruso is your favorite is because he was a great tenor and moved millions of belcanto lovers. Paoli excelled in the dramatic repertory in a period where there were superb tenors. In 1899 he sang Arnold,William Tell by Rosinni in Paris
I play to post more in the future. He has always been one of my favorite tenors. His early European Victors are genuinely thrilling when played with a high-quality horn machine and you are sitting close by. You can't video-record the sound experienced when listening LIVE to his discs.
@ellicantropo, estoy totalmente de acuerdo con usted. Paoli fue muy superior a Caruso. Me alegro de encontrar a otra persona que tenga mi misma opinion. BRAVO PAOLI !!!
The man traveled all over the world...Austria, Italy, Russia, America, Australia, China, Egypt...sang for Zars, Kings, Popes etc...i mean, this was in the begining of the 20th century!!!...pride of Puerto Rico!
Thanks for your enthusiastic comment. If only you could hear this recording played on a vintage Victor with a four-foot brasss horn. You would be astounded. What you hear here is about 20 percent of what the recording is really like.
nessun dorma is a piece of cake compared to "Di Quella Pira" imagine paoli singing nessun dorma in today's world.a different stile a different level. king of tenors lives!! Giacomo puccini missed it!!!
If your opinion is true, then logic tells us that the composer R. Leoncavallo was foolish in chosing Paoli for the historical recording of I Pagliacci, and G Lauri Volpi a crazy critic because he considered Paoli the greatest dramatic tenor. By the way who is your favorite tenor(s). What do you think of Leon Escalais?
Oh my goodness! How sad! In spite of the primitive recording mechanisms he had to use - the gorgeous quality of his voice shines through!! The exaggerated held high notes reminds me of early Corelli!!
Paoli at the recordings broke many cylinders because of his powerful voice, so he had to record at a distance of 20ft. and singing toward the opposite direction. History facts... of one of the greatest voices of all times. Laureano
One cannot criticise Paoli. Perhaps it is Nationalism or some macho sexual thing - or both. Many, many modern day critics think his singing crude, almost laughable, whilst understanding his success. Paoli has poor intonation, a crude provincial style; his supporters worship him - it is pointless to put such thoughts to paper. The Wikipedia entry is locked, controlled by the Paoli worshippers - it is all very odd. There is no doubt that Paoli was admired and had a successful career; but why?
Paoli was not prevented by Caruso from appearing at the Met, that is a downright lie, Maurice Grau Conreid and later Gazzi Casazza never invited him, Caruso was NOT that powerful, when Tenors like Slezak and Martinelli came to the Met, he watched and always listened to performers, Salazar performed at the Met, why not Paoli, I do not think Caruso had anything to do with it. That is a slur on a Great Human Being Colleagues and Audiences loved him. Paoli was not successful in London the three times he appeared there alternating with Zenatello in Aida and Otello.

Caruso controls who sang at the Met, he doesn't want competition.
Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a very lively performance. Antonio Paoli no doubt would have been a singer who made a strong impression upon his audiences.

First tenor to record.
Prohibido Olvidar! Antonio Paoli "orgullo boricua!" Perdona el lucimiento… es que como Paoli… ¡también soy PUERTORRIQUEÑO!
мой любимый тенор с детства!, поёт легче Карузо, так как школа на И и ДО тянет по полчаса! Шикарно!!!

😂Вечная, светлая память выдающемуся тенору Антонио Эммили Паоли .😅😊

No doubt one of the greatest tenors who ever lived, but I still think Caruso was greater...I hope I don't get trashed for this.
IMHO, Paoli had by far superior technique (especially for his high notes), but I love Caruso's timbre, it's just gorgeous.

ausuyucayeque The Breaking of cylinders is a legend; he did not make cylinders
@tenorismo What a wobbly untrained and imperfect voice. Great man, great career but imperfect voice.
the was recorded from the 1st ever recording device no dout it got degraded some from high C to high B

Non esageriamo, era un buon tenore noto soprattutto per le sparate di acuti ma non era molto rifinito.
